The seemingly mundane moments in life looking back do seem to be precious..

Find the thing that is most precious and decide that you will not give

that up..

That is what pain killers are for..

Tom,

on Tuesday and was not fun but she did not know that although the older kids

do. I miss being able to garden, drive anywhere. I miss being able to

clean my house with out pain. Going anywhere is painful but I do try so hard to

make the most of what I have become. At the moment am checking emails while

cooking my back with a heating pad and waiting for the pain killers to

kick in so I can go vacumn.

, I totally empathize. I am 43 and have had to quit driving, be very

careful about staying fit(it is important to me to be in shape as much as i can

be and i am doing well at it, 46 in the shoulders and 30 waist, actually to

strong for my own good as i can hurt my neck easily)and i have had to give up

miost of my sex life but am lucky to have a understanding, christian wife.

Christianity has helped a lot in the past 25 yrs.  I can still fish which i live

doing.  I stay away from firearms tho.  Gave up hunting....see I was a East

Texas country boy , lived on a ranch west of texarkana. Now i give up my loved

country life for a life close to drs in st louois.  One way i have grown i

spiritually ( i do not kno what or if you are in that respect but i think you

will respect mine as i will respect yours.)  It is very humiliating to give up

so much. I was in the Army and a strong and good soldier in Panama...drug wars

-got shot in groin up into liver

and fell injuring my neck badly , 5 in all disabling conditions, 14 meds a day

and arthritis now creeping in to make it all worse, my pain is bad to severe all

the time no matter what the PT  or meds narcotic only one but strong and a lot

and dr says i have so few options but to live out life this way as way to many

complications with all the DX's.

I understand and care and pray for you.

Harold, & Tom, I used to feel guilty using narcotic pain relievers, &

Klonopin . If you were a nurse who used them for pain, or a medical disorder,

you were still seen as a drug addict, & an impaired person. I prefer to see

myself as focused, & functioning with little pain. Yes, I choose not to

live with excruciating pain, & pain medication helps me to work when I need

to, & enjoy the finer things in life. The medication makes me functional

not high. Actually I was called a substance abuser when I was only taking

Klonopin 1 mg at bedtime. I still only take the maximum of 2 regular strength

Vicodin's a day, & Motrin 800 mg at bedtime. I am fortunate enough, not

to need surgery, & will avoid it, until I risk permanent nerve damage, weakn

ess, & intractable pain. Some spinal surgery further deteriorates the

other discs, because they need to compensate for the fused discs, which

results in significant degeneration, which necessitates further surgery. I

look

for the least invasive surgery, such as disc shaving for herniated discs. I

also would get a 2nd, or 3rd opinion, before I used surgery as my 1st

treatment option. Just my personal opnions. June, RN

Adding my little bit, I think they make playgrounds with piles of sand to walk

on is another slap.  That has to be corrected before I get to take kids to the

park.  And the mulch ain't any better.  I vote for rubber base. You?

June,

thanks as always, you reply in a way I understand.  Heck i have been called a

lot of things my self. Some folks dont like the Army. called me a killer, an

unforgivable sinner.  I dont care any more as i got to get by and thosse voices

are just dust in the wind.  My dr says surgury is a 50% risk of total

paralasis.  WE decided that wasnt a good thing.  Now the meds are a hassle. no

high.  just something i have to deal with and i cant live by someone elses self

made mores.  I turn to the Lord for answers and i get them.  They do come in odd

packages tho.  Some what camoflaged. So to speak.

hope a good day comes your way,

I can tell you that I believe that my surgery did just what you said could

happen.. It may have fixed the 2 bad ones at the time(or may not have) but

I now have 3 more bad disks in by neck and spinal cord damage...

Also, it sounds to me that you really do not take much in the way of meds..

I was working on a lot more.. It finally had to stop because I was

damaging my liver by taking so many pills to close together so I could

function..

You have mentioned this nursing deal multiple times and I have to say it

sounds like a lawsuit to me..

It would seem to me that people in a medical position would recognize that

driving on meds is much better than the pain..

Of course driving on either can be bad..

Harold,

It is a sad state of affairs that some of these so called peace advocates

take out this venom on the people who have served our country..

I may have been against some of our wars but that has no bearing on how I

Hi Tom, I think you got me muddled up with Bird Crazy about the nursing thing.

I have 4 herniated disks and I have to take a whole buffet of pills just to get

thru a day. finially beginning to realise that taking more pain meds is a

better way to function instead of being totally miserable all the time.

I think if you take pain killers for pain you don't get high as they are doing

their job.

i really don't like to think too much about this but here are a few

i miss walking thru the woods when it is snowing and so quiet out you can hear

your heart beat, i miss snowmobiling on a clear crisp sunny day, i miss kicking

up my feet thru piles of colorful fall leaves, i miss camping with fresh brook

trout for dinner cooking over a campfire, i miss flying on horseback thru the

meadow, i miss catching gears just right in my old muscle cars (or being able to

drive a clutch for that matter), i miss waking up not in pain, i miss days i

didn't have to carry pills with me, i miss being able to make plans for tomorrow

(until i know what kind of pain day it will be), i miss having dreams of being

loved or falling in love again (as no one would want me as fubar as i am), but i

miss most of all being trusted anymore to babysit my grandson (since i went on

morphine) who even at 18 months old (and all rough and tumble boy) was so gentle

with his nana. here's to better days, wyld

I do miss work and having that feeling of accomplishment, but what I really

miss is:

I had such a different plan for my retirement..

I looked forward to playing doubles (tennis) in the morning with friends

and then maybe having a beer afterward with the guys..

I also planned to stay strong enough to be hiking well past the

limitations of others and getting into the far reaches of national parks where

you

are with only those who are into nature as much as Iza and myself are..

In fact I had thought I might be a volunteer up in Yellowstone during my

summers and to be active in the conservation of the indigenous wildlife (IE:

wolves, bison etc..)

I looked forward to sharing lots of sunrises and sunsets with Iza, of all

of the things I have look ed forward to this is the one that hurts the

most..

I do intend to keep my time in the morning with Iza and am ready to endure

whatever pain to needed to not lose that but what has been lost does

sometimes grate on a person...

My body is a good weather predictor. My neck and hands are especially sensitive

to barometric pressure drops. I'd rather not have so many thunderstorms. Few

people can understand how miserable the weather can make a person feel. Only

those who experience it to the degree we do.

Today was a very warm day and temps are going to drop all night and the rain is

here. I'm just trying to find a way to be comfortable enough to relax and rest

tonight.

Fuddster,

I don't know the type and severity of your health issues, but here is what I do

know. Most spinal issues only get worse with time especially if you are still

working. I don't mean to scare you but that is just the nature of the beast. I

wish someone had told me this next info. before I got where I had to quit my

job. If you can take out short term and long term disability through work or if

you can afford it a private company. Make sure you have disability protection on

any loans and credit cards you have. And once you get to the point you feel you

can no longer work get a sympathetic doctor that will help with forms and

letters for your disability. Getting SS disability is a long process. Insulate

yourself financially as much as you can before you have to quit work. I hope you

get better and can continue working and living a normal life.

As for the weather yes changes and extremes of any kind cause additional pain,

stiffness and immobility. My pain is the worst a day or two before it rains.

Guess it has something to do with pressure.

Jane H.

P.S.: Don't feel guilty. You did not ask for the pain. Do what you can and if

others don't understand then they are not people you really need in your life.
