I have had cold sores most of my life. I have used Zovorax, but I did

not find that it shortened the time period enough to justify the cost. I

use L-Lysine tablets with good results and Campho Phenique topically. I

also use Acidolphilus as a preventative, if I seem to get in a cycle of

outbreaks. Jut my 2 cents worth. **

Might I mention that what the OP has inside the mouth is called

a 'canker sore' which is totally different from a cold sore which is

outside the mouth. The salt water technique (harsh!) or some extra

vitamin C usually cures them up. Kinder approach, buy some OralGel

(sp?) you know that littletube of gel stuff that stops tooth pains

will also take care of mouth sores as well. Keeping up with the

teeth cleaning & antiseptic mouthwash helps too. They last usually

for a few days to a week or so.

A 'cold sore' is caused from a form of the herpes simplex virus,

which lies dormant in people until their immune system is somehow

compromised (cold coming on, stress etc) and pop! a small tingling

sensation on the lips, corner of the mouth or anywhere up to under

the nose is a sign ones about to occur. Their other name of a 'fever

blister' suits them well (you can also have a lowgrade fever off and

on when one occurs)and they can be quite nasty if not caught right

away with some over the counter medication. There are alot of

effective ones out there these days. They last from a minimum of a

week and longer if more healing time is needed.

After having fought off a sinus infection, and then a wild bout of

flu which went into bronchitis, which when I was considering myself

almost better, I then had an outbreak of three cold sores! Dammit!

Give me the bronchitis back instead! Or even pneumonia! One on the

bottom my lip which went away quickly, and two on the top which

wanted to hang on for over a week! Lipstick can only cover so

much! :-o

I found that one drop of breastmilk cures a cold sore on the lip with

in the same day it appears. It works better than any prescription

I've ever used. Haven't had to bother with a cold sore at all while

still nursing my son. Pretty amazing stuff!

Actually, a LaLeche member told me that breastmilk is antiviral, so I

just took a guess that it might work when I started to get a cold

sore. It really worked. It went away the same day I tried it. I've

been nursing for 10 months so far and plan to freeze some extra after

I stop for coldsore medication.

>>>I would try some Lysine - you should be able to get that in a local health food store, Quest is good brand commonly in these sort of shops. takes 500mg three times a day if he feels a 'tingle' I dont; get them so I know not what this feels like and then this usually heads them off and it never appears.

I did get him a little dropper bottle of lotion also, and I have an unopened spare if you want to try that, which I think is liquid Lysine - I will find the link later so you can read about it

Its Propolis Extract from honey bees. says after you oput it on it turns into a scab vey quick an then falls off and is gone. I have my magnifying glass out to read the bottle and it says it may sting on first contact so maybe soem oral Lysine would be better - hardly any taste as I recall

PS Let me know if you want me to send the spare Blister-Rid

Vicki, have heard Lysine (500 mgs) is good, in addition to selenium. Hope your little guy is better.

Any thoughts please, has 2 big cold sores at the moment but he hasn't had a cold, wondering if there is any connection with recent regression, the last time I seen cold sores was when he was at his worst headbanging, rage cycle which he is now re visiting. What should I be using?Desperately looking for clues here as to why he has gone backwards hoping the cold sores are somehow connected.TIAVicky

Vicky,

Given what you've said. I would definitely start looking into a

viral protocol for your son. Cold sores are one of the signs of

possible viral issues in our ASD kids (this is in the files under

Viral Information). It would seem that viruses are a part of the

problem for many of our kids, even some of them who've never shown a

sign or elevated titers.

I am using Lauricidin, Virastop, and Sambucol for my son's

protocol. OLE is also very powerful but we've not been able to use

it lately. Many people are also using Valtrex, but it is generally

an Rx (you can get it non-Rx but it is expensive). Valtrex is

specifically designed for the herpes virus, so it might turn out to

be something you would want in your viral protocol.

My opinion is that once you start down the viral protocol path, you

want to vow to stick with it and throw everything you can at the

viruses. Unlike with chelation, viral protocol can cause regression

as part of the healing. Also, the whole area of viruses is really

much less understood than chelation. A bit of trailblazing being

done, but lots of parents are seeing some great results.

I hope this might help.

Won't try the G.P. again based on Tuesdays experience lol, but interesting about the rashes what did they look like?

gets these strange rashes now and again, not eczema although sometimes look like that around his mouth and chin, but he also gets these strange red rashes, usually at night and gone in the morning they can be anywhere on his body, last night he had them on his rib cage and weirdly above his left eyebrow, looks like red paint.

Thanks

Thanks Anita, I'm trying to work my way back and find how this all kicked off.

Cold sores were huge this morning and blistery, meltdowns last night and this morning were particularly fierce, he also had the gloopy pooh last night, first time in a very long time.

was doing incredibly well for such a long time there, really making gains almost on a daily basis, we were just starting to see the glimmer of a regular little lad, it's pretty soul destroying to see him right back in this state.

His health seems to be on the wane, with the hair loss, cold sores and now gloop and I just don't know why, the only thing to do is try and work back, he is also losing weight, his ribs are very visible.

My son Darryl suffered from cold sores...

I think its a sign of poor immune system as well.

In his case I believe they were a sign of Herpes infection.

I know now he had a poor immune systsm and he had been exposed to

herpes 1 & 2 viruses between the age of 7 months and 2. Strange

rashes / fevers etc.

Confirmed by premier autism panel via immunosciences lab.

We got hold of aciclovir off the GP - dispersable tablets.

(Its similar to valtrex)last year and did a course of that.

After 3 days he threw up tonnes of mucus / bit flushed in face..

rest of week nightmare behaviour (probably some kind of die off)

but since then we have had no further outbreak and his skin is

really good.

Worth a go in my book..if you have friendly GP.
