My daughter was told by her doctor that when she is standing, working or

whatever, she should lift her leg about 6 inches. Kind of hard to explain.

For instance if she is peeling potatoes, he suggested she open the door under

the sink and put her foot on the bottom shelf or have a small bench for this

purpose. I hope this helps. Jacque

Hi

Yes, I know all about trying to sleep at night. I can only sleep on my back.

If I sleep on my side, my sides pinch me. Sleeping on my stomach is

unbearable. I am 34 and have never had surgery or a brace. Actually in my

case, the doctor says that my scoliosis is minor but I have degenerative

disc disease with sciatica which is causing most of my problems. I am now

taking Relafen 1000 mg. (500mg twice a day) as a test. The Relafen seems to

be helping....Hope you are feeling better soon.

Welcome to the group. I had extreme difficulty sleeping for many years. I

moved from a waterbed, to a regular bed, to the couch and finally slept

sitting in a chair as the only way to alleviate the pain. Unfortunately, the

only solution for me, other than constant reliance on narcotics, was

surgery, a T2-S1 fusion with titanium rods. I now sleep wonderfully in a

regular bed, so well, in fact, I have a difficult time getting up in the

morning. Donna

Sometimes the back pain is caused by the hanging pannus. This could be your

ticket to a tummy tuck paid for by insurance. Keep documenting the problem

and go to a plastic surgeon and see what he thinks...

Back pain

Hello all, I read daily but don't post often. I have a question, have

any of you noticed lower back pain as you loose weight? Right after my

surgery I bought a new mattress set (very expensive I might add) and for

awhile it was very comfortable. However, as I lost weight my back started

hurting more and more at night. I thought it was the mattress since it had

one of those deep pillow tops, so I bought another one without the pillow

top (also expensive), however, my back pain has increased, especially in my

lower back. A few weeks ago, while I was laying awake unable to sleep due

to back pain, I noticed my lower back was in an extreme curve, I sleep on my

side, and it dawned on me that I don't have the padding any more that used

to keep my back straight! I'm convinced that is the cause but want to hear

from other MGBrs as to if this has happened to them. I'm now thinking about

buying one of those select mattresses so I can increase o! r decrease the

firmness. I have been to the physician and chiropracter, and have changed

exercises to help, but to no avail.

I also wanted to mention to those dealing with plataeus that hang in

there they go away. 5 months ago I hit a plataeu and thought my weight loss

had stopped, I had lost 105 lbs and was very happy but really wanted to

loose another 20 lbs. I was stuck at 150lbs, well I quit worring about it

and noticed my clothes getting a little loose. I've lost another 10 lbs.

what a wonderful surprise, life is full of surprises since the MGB!

Thanks for listening, Audry

Hey Audrey, I was one of your littermates.

I have a Select Comfort bed and I have no back pain. My husband and I wouldn't

trade our bed for anything! In contrast to you, my lower back pain is gone.

My husband has a bad back and had lots of trouble sleeping until we got this

bed. It might not help everyone but it sure suits us.

Dear Audrey,

Actually, my back pain and all other aches and pains has decreased! That is

an unexpected blessing. The only thing I might offer Audrey, since you've

already been to your doctor and chiropracter, is that you might put some

pillows underneath your knees at night. That will take the pressure off your

lower back. I'm curious about what your doctor reccommended for you,

....anything to help? Good Luck, Kate

I have been having severe back pain in the morning for the last 3 weeks. I

have an appt for a physical next week so I am just waiting to have it checked

then. It is the lower back as well & usually goes away after about a 1/2 hour or

so but I have a hard time getting out of bed in the AM!

I have a select comfort bed and I too would NEVER trade it in for any other

kind of bed.

I do have some lower back pain that I think is from my " apron " . I will be

talking to my pcp about it later this month.

I do want to ask everyone if anyone is having a problem with their tailbone!!

Mine is killing me! No I don't have a cyst at the end of my spine. I do think

that my tailbone hurts because I have no more padding! Anyone else??

Hi ,

Yes, the end of my spine feels like a basketball! It hurts like crazy! I

even developed a pressure sore at the end of my spine in the past couple of

weeks. I went to see my PCP for it, even though I had been doctoring on it

and it was almost well by the time he saw it. I mainly went so that I would

have the documentation to back me up when it comes to having some plastic

surgery done. The doc just confirmed what I already knew....there is

absolutely NO padding back there anymore! Everything on me has gone south!!

LOL I am having to sleep on an egg-crate cushion under my butt at night. I

have slept mostly on my back since my MGB 21 months ago. I asked the group

if others had found themselves with this problem, but you are the only one

who has posted anything. If I hear of anything that helps, I will let you

know! It hurts...believe me....I know!

Kathy, that's me exactly, and I had my surgery about the same time as

you. My family doctor says it's the change in weight. I'm going to get

one of the Select comfort mattresses, I hope it works because I'm so

tired all the time from lack of sleep at night. I used to have sleep

apnea but it is all gone with the weight, but I need some sleep. Good

luck with your dr. visit. Audry

Hi Audrey-

I have read many posts about back pain after weight loss and I have

it, too. I sleep on a waterbed and I have had to add a LOT of water

to it. I have been putting pillows everywhere trying to help support

everything but I still wake up stiff. I added an egg crate and a

featherbed mattress topper and I STILL have pain and stiffness.

I have been thinking about the Select Comfort air mattress, but just

can't afford it right now. So I add more pillows.

Margaret, I have a water bed also, have been on it since 1979, had a car

wreck and my doc recommended me get one. My hubby didnt like it so I did get one

of the select comfort beds. My butt hit bottom for me to get it as soft as I

like and my hubbys side bowed up for it to be as hard as he liked, so we sent it

back and put the waterbed back up. I put him in his own room now so hes happy

with a hard matteress (his snoring was killing me). I think the back pain is

because your sleeping thru the night and your sleeping solid so you dont turn

and toss as much and it makes you stiff. If you sit in a chair for a long time

and not move, you get stiff, same here, your sleeping very deeply and not

movinnng because you can breathe easier and with not so much layered weight on

her chest. Try turning over during the nite more if you can, that will help.

But I didnt find the select comfort to help me...... Cary Sue

I also have lower back paid and back pain between my shoulder. I almost feel

like my posture has gotten worse. Because of the pain, I am always

straigthening my back out. I wondered if my breast a sagging more now and

pulling down on my shoulders? I never had this before surgery. I find that if

I stand for a long period of time, it really gets bad and I have to go lay down

flat on my back to take the pressure off my upper back. I hope this is related

to the Actigall, then I would know that it will go away.

Dana, do you think Actigall could be causing the back pain?

Nanette

I'm having trouble with back pain too. I noticed that a side-effect of

Actigall is back pain. I don't know if it could be related to that or not.

It's

possible.

Carolyn W. here in NC...I have been having problems with my

tailbone but I broke mine about two months before surgery. I had

heard it would take up to a year for it to realy be 'ok' again but

since the surgery, it hurts like the dickens!! As I lose more, it

hurts more. I do beleive it is the padding. My doctor said for me

Had my surgery August 25 and it is getting a little better but it

does hurt. I have started using my treadmill and that bothers it

Hi, Carolyn! I had some horrendous tailbone pain too for a couple of months.

It was just excruciating for a while, but now is much better and a little

tender only if I sleep on my back. I guess I was used to that huge

protective fat barrier I had around it before! I hope you feel better soon.

How could they fuse you without hardware ?

What is holding the none in place ?

Did they use a replacement disc ?

back pain

Hello again. Well, I had my back surgery, (fused L5-S1 w/o instruments), on Sept 3rd and I have another 4 months in bed before I can get up. Being bedridden for six months is awful. The pain I have now is the same as the pain that I had before the surgery, caused from a broken verterbrae and deteriorated disc. I can't believe how much longer I have to sit in bed every minute of every day. I just keep reminding myself of how much pain I was in before the surgery and how I should be better after all of this is over. I think a lot of people don't understand what it is like to have chronic back pain day in and day out. They don't understand how your back affects everything we do unless they are in the same situation. This is why I am so happy to be involved in this group because I read what people write and can relate to every word.Thank you.

C2,

Thanks for the support. Yes we haven't chatted before. (My hands don't work

so well anymore, so I usually just read.) I haven't asked my Rheumy about a

chiropractor, but that is probably the next step.

Thanks again, and feel good,

Back pain

Hi Lara

I don't think we've met - I'm Caroline 2 (C2) and live in England. I've

been in the group about 6 months. I've had lots of back pain as well as

general joint pain. The back pain has been really helped by seeing a

chiropractor. I chatted with him a lot and explained how painful

everything is and how I don't really like to be touched, so he is

really gentle and never does anything that causes more pain. I always

get a massage afterwards, which is also very gentle, and I find that

helps. I know how horrible back pain is, so you have my sympathy. I

hope the painkillers work.

All the best.

hello...

where do i even begin with my back pain story...? it all started soon

after i had my spinal fusion in 1990. i wasn't fused at the pelvis (at

least i don't think so), but i started having lower back pain which was

pretty consistent, and got worse towards the end of the day and when i was

stressed out. kaiser just put me on vicodin, which i started taking way to

much of... then they referred me to a pain clinic, where i was put on

narcotics -- which helped without giving me the loopy feeling vicodin gave

me (you just need to be on the right dosage). i tried pretty much

everything for it (including a spinal fusion revision operation - with no

success), but the only thing that helped (besides meds) was massage and

accupuncture. i HIGHLY reccommend trying accupuncture... i did a two month

course (once/week) and i swear after that my pain was signifigantly

reduced. i feel that a big cause of my pain was the fact that i held all

my stress in my back... so it's somewhat psychosomatic.

i also have a problem with my tailbone which is unrelated.... it kind of

sticks out more than it should, giving me a semi-tail! i can't lay on my

back for long periods of time, and it constantly rubs up against my

backrest when i lean over -- giving me somewhat of a problem with skin

breakdown (although i've never had a full-on pressure sore).

it sounds to me like your son's problem is unrelated though -- caused

more by positioning/lifting... is there a different way that you could try

lifting him to avoid pain? maybe a hoyer lift, which keeps him in a

sitting position while he is being lifted...?

I was not fused to the pelvis. They left the bottom four vertebrea

unfused so that I would have the necessary hip movement to walk after

surgery since I walked into that operating room. Unfortunately, I

haven't even learned to do that again.

I wanted to emphasize more about the acupuncture, however. I have had

chronic lower back pain since my spinal fusion and have been on more

medications than I can name. Most of which relieved my pain but gave

me side effects that I couldn't handle. One year at univ we had a

natural healing seminar and this guy gave a presentation on

acupuncture. Afterwards I spoke with him since I was curious to try

anything at that point. However, one of my biggest problems since my

surgery is that I'm very very upset when people touch my back,

especially over the area the rods lay. It feels very unpleasant and

the pressure is just too weird for me to bear. He had said that I

shouldn't worry about that and he'd be able to fix it in a snap. He

let me go into his private office for 3 free sessions. After the first

session, I had no pain for over 2 months before I even needed to go

back for the second free session, and when he touched my back where

the rods lay it didn't feel strange like usual. Those seven months I

was going back for acupuncture I was pain free and med free. I only

stopped because a normal session was $150 a pop and, well...when I was

only getting $400 (ha!) in SSI at the time and most of it was going to

my rent and the other to my tuition bill, it didn't leave much more

than $10/20 to play with every month. I wish I could go back to it

instead. It's much more effective than these meds I'm on now.

Anyways, just wanted to ramble on about my experience with the

acupuncture as well. ^_^

The trouble with a Hoyer lift is it " folds " the person being lifted.

Basically, he says his pain reoccurs when his knees get too close to his

chest (he calls it being folded). I think his lower back gets strained.

Not always, but they recommend it because it helps with sitting posture,

reduces the incidents of crankshafting, and is suppose to limit the

potential for backpain. However, I think it also limits some

flexibility (though I may be wrong) and that's what I'm thinking may

have contributed to this backpain problem...Just a hypothesis.

Re: back pain

I could be wrong, but i thought they always fused at the pelvis for a

spinal

fusion. i guess i should look it up. anybody know?
