Hi Sheila,

I think we need to get proper guidelines on diagnosis and treatment -

possibly drawn up by a group of doctors AND patients - you have to

have the illness to understand it, and who better to contribute. This

way we can list all the available treatments, get better diagnostic

tools and also point out the very important message that we are all

different, have different life styles, are different ages etc, and so

we need treatment tailored to our individual needs. Doctors must be

made to realise this. If I had listened to mine last year, I would be

very ill now. ( I will be furthering his education on Monday at my

next appointment!)

Well he added to that - or in common use, which I guess covers such things as aspirin. I will bear this in mind if we ever move house, to check out what GPs "do" first!

It is up to your doctor and I bet you that he DOES prescribe unlicensed medication for children, as many of the medications given to children are not licensed. If you were living in a region where you had more doctors, I would advise you to change your doctor. Luv - Sheila

But didn’t Forrest say they would

Hi Sheila,

For me, the refusal to prescribe anything other than T4 even if

the poor patient is still symptomatic, is important.

We're getting quite a list here- sounds to me as if the patient is just not

being considered as a whole person an we have so many problems.

The one aspect seems to be that the thyroid patient gets a raw deal!

For me it would be that GP's only go by blood tests and that if you

have a so called " normal " blood test you can pass under the radar for

years before a correct diagnosis is made.

Just a thought Paracetamol is not licenced but I don't know a Dr who won't use that? CarolineRe dr's won't prescribe armour

Hi Sheila and everyone - what Im picking up from the responses about the petition are 2 distinct areas - important depending on what our personal issues are:

!) is not being given any sort of treatment because the bloods are in the 'normal' range;

2) not being treated with Armour when Thyroxine isnt effective.

Not wanting to create more work for you Sheila - but it looks like its two separate petitions that are needed!!!

The point made by Anne about involving patients is really important and should be included in both as its one of the key themes in the NHS reforms - a 'Patient Led NHS' (ho ho ho - that's my Christmas laugh!!!).

Simply treating symptoms of hypo added to their set treatment of T4

ending up giving them tons of meds instead of delving further into the

obvious cause regardless of blood test results. IE only having one

method of treating available, heck, every other illness has choices of

treatments.
