Deena,

Doctor said my liver was posterior. So he ordered an ultrasound so the

technician could mark an x on my side where the needle should go.

The actual procedure went very quickly and painlessly.

They required me to lay on my side for a certain number of hours. Told me I

couldn't get out of bed till 10:00 pm. Released me the next morning bright

and early. Having to stay in the VA overnight on a too-soft bunk was the

worst part.

Your biopsy should be a sinch.

Your friend,

Gene

I went to hospital, filled out some paper work, put on gown, went to a lab room,

doc thumps me like a ripe watermelon, numbs the area he's gonna use, does the

biopsy, shows me a bright red sliver of liver, and I go to a waiting area for an

hour and then went to Macs.

Hi Deena,

The ANTICIPATION of the biopsy is MUCH worse than the biopsy

itself. In fact, the actual biopsy is so fast (assuming you have

someone experienced doing it) it doesn't really have time to hurt.

I've had two biopsies. The first one I had no pre-meds, just a local

to numb the area. (The liver has no pain receptors.) My doc kept

telling me it would only take a few seconds. I decided to distract

myself during the biopsy by counting (in my head!) the number of

seconds it took before he was finished. Well - I didn't even get to

one. It was over! The only problem I had that time was that

afterwards whenever I took a deep breath it hurt, so they gave me

Demerol and it worked fine. The worst part was having to lay on that

rolled up towel for two hours afterwards. I was sore (minor) at the

biopsy site for a few weeks. My second biopsy was very different. I

asked if I could be premedicated, and I don't know what they gave me

- Versed, which kind of makes you forget and not care what they do to

you, and a pain medication, and I never felt a thing. I remember them

saying it was over, and I asked to see the specimen. They all looked

at me like I was nuts, then said they had already sent it to the lab.

I had to lay on the rolled up towel for an hour or two, it never even

hurt at all afterwards, not even sore later. I think it was probably

because I was more relaxed. Basically, both were a breeze. I know

you'll still be nervous, but hopefully this will ease some of your

fears!

Hi Deena....my biopsy was a breeze....they did an ultrasound guided

biopsy, turned me on my side....froze me...I didn't feel the needle at

all. No pain. The only downside is you have to lay on your right side

for a few hours....for them to monitor that your liver isn't bleeding.

I brought a book and a friend....it was a piece of cake.

Deena it's a piece of cake. People scare you with

stories and you lay there expecting it but all you get

is a little pinch in upper right shoulder. When you

were a kid and ran to much did you ever get a stitch

in your side? Well if you did the pain from that is

more painful. I was kept 8 hours on my side because

of a bleeding tendency I have. They used a CAT scan

to target the right area and you hold your breath.

Like I said it's a piece a cake. You will be saying

" Your Done? "

are you serious? it sounds pretty quick and simple.

did you experience any pain? what about the local anthesia?, did you feel any

pain when they poke that needle in the liver area?

If I remember correctly (it's been almost 7 years), the doctor tapped on me a

little bit, said the liver was posterior, sent me down on a cart to

ultrasound, the techician had me lift my right arm up and my hand behind my

head while I was lying down, marked an " X " on my right side, told me to hold

my arm and hand exactly the same way during the biopsy procedure. When I got

back to my ward, the doctor used the " X " as the spot to insert the needle,

wham, it was done, he showed me the aspiration, and that was it. I had to lay

on a rolled up towel on my side for a while. I ate lunch like that and

remember thinking how good it tasted.

This was all done at the VA Hospital.

You'll be fine, Deena. Good luck.

Deena....I am trying to remember if it hurt when they put the local

freezing in....if I can't remember....I guess it didn't hurt. No pain at

all when the liver needle went it, it was so fast, faster than a blink.

Easy, breezy....went good.

Deena,

No, you only need genotyping once. The liver biopsy is the only

way to know if you have any damage in your liver, and to follow it's

progress - or in my case, regression, since my year of treatment got

rid of my fibrosis. But I wouldn't have known that if I had not had

the second biopsy. I will probably have another biopsy in another

couple of years to see if anything has changed. If my fibrosis starts

to return then I can choose to treat again. A biopsy is the only way

to gain this type of information. No blood test or any other test can

provide this important information. I know it sounds scary, but it is

very fast and simple. Ultrasound prior to a biopsy is pretty routine,

it lets the doc know where to do it.
