Again, it's a CFL -- compact flourescent lightbulb -- and yes, it does

contain mercury. Check the multiple articles I posted.

Sorry, your initial message stated " halogen "

" --> My dogs knocked over my lamp and broke one of those halogen

> > > > lightbulbs.-- "

If you corrected that, I missed it. I agree that a compact

fluorescent, or ANY fluorescent for that matter, does contain

mercury and warrants concern.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound cranky..... having mercury in my house

makes me a little irritable.

So any advice here? I mean, I cleaned it up, vacuumed, etc. Would it

help if I cleaned the carpet? I have all the windows in the house

open and our huge whole house exhaust fan going.

It is a gas? So is it in the air? Is it a powder? What the heck is

in those light bulbs??

Should I call the County tomorrow to have them measure the mercury

level? Do I replace the carpet??

Am I overreacting?

I don't think you're overreacting. Call the county, get

measurements, get yourself tested and the kids. And getting rid of

the carpet, though it sounds painfully expensive, is probably a good

idea. And get rid of the vaccuum cleaner.

Sorry, probably not what you want to hear right now but I keep

thinking of what was in Room 6 in the Jersey school where so many

teachers ended up having kids with disabilities. Might have been a

broken bulb, might have been something else, so little is known and

there are certain things none of us want to find out the hard way.

This isn't a directive but just what I would would do if I were in

your shoes. I'd be a mess over it, by the way. I'd be weeping over

our oriental. I hope you just have some synthetic carpet that you

hate and have been lobbying to rip up if you just had the excuse and

that your vaccuum had lost suction anyway and you have a coupon for

a better one.

I guess the good news is that you can, um, redecorate?

It's actually new carpet. :( But whatever I have to do, I'll do.

What makes me so mad is that I told my husband MONTHS ago to get rid

of those stupid light bulbs... but no, captain environment says we

need to save 40 cents a month on our electric bill. Wonder how he

feels now about having to spend thousands on new carpet.

Hrmph.

Should I go get a hotel room tonight? I feel like we're walking

around in a hazmat zone.

You would think this sort of stuff was covered under insurance.

you should try to get the local media involved there to do

a story on this… no one has a clue… I didn’t either, I filled

out house with those things thinking I was doing good –saving money and

saving a small part of the environment…

These new bulbs are awful.

Sorry about your troubles… honestly, if it were me, I would

get out of the house until the health dept comes.

Well I did everything I wasn't supposed to do.

I touched it, I

vacuumed, ARRRGH.

The fire dept. was just here -- they can't test for mercury, so I have

to wait until tomorrow for the health dept. to come and test the house

for mercury.

Do you remember the lady from Maine who had to pay $2,000 for clean

up??? Read this:

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/story.html?id=aa7796aa-e4a5-4c06-be84-b62dee548fda

When they tested for mercury after the broken light bulb it was 6x the

EPA limit.

I'm freaking out over here!

Here's a brief article that explains the difference between halogen and fluorescent bulbs: http://www.physicscentral.com/lou/2001/bulbs.html Aasaautismlink <cindy@...> wrote: Hey guys...My dogs knocked over my lamp and broke one of those halogen lightbulbs.Aren't they loaded with mercury??? It's a CFL -- one of those " twisty " looking ones. I guess the crisis

is over. We've been ventilating all day. Before I read the

directions on how to clean it up, I picked up the pieces. I don't

care if *I* get exposed to mercury, but I do care if my kids do.

We're going to call in a carpet cleaning company tomorrow in case

there is remaining powder residue.

I know, that mercury is so mercurial. Bulbs- bad; shots- safe. I

think mercury might be bewitched, actually, because if you drip it

on your hand, you die. If you breath it, you're poisoned. If you eat

it, you're f** & ed. But if you inject it into a day old infant, it's

fine because the bad juju has been exorcised by magic-wand waving

Harry Potter lab technicians at vaccine manufacturing facilities.

Unless the infant is a bad infant. Good infants from good families

are safe.

The twisty ones are the ones with mercury.

Compact florescent light (CFL). I would call the EPA. I don’t

think your carpet would be salvageable at all, nor your vacuum cleaner.

Halogen bulbs aren’t around as much anymore because they use too much

power and are a fire hazard.

Do you have MB-12 for yourself? You

are needed for your kids so you want to be just as careful for yourself.

Call your DAN dr. and find out what you can do immediately, like selenium,

methionine, etc. It has certainly been a shit day for you, I really hope

you can get someone out immediately from EPA to clean it up. You might

want to put plastic up around the doorways to that room as not to expose the

rest of the house. Good luck!!!! -

I'm sorry you're going through this. The CFL's now come in ALL shapes,

including globes for bathrooms. I would buy a few boxes of Renew Life

brand Heavy Metal cleanse and start taking them as a precaution to help

your body eliminate the mercury that might be in your home. And yes,

call EPA and inquire about carpet, etc. And call the manufacturer too.

Good luck. KIM

We considered ordering carpeting from Bioshield. They send samples and

sell a lot of nontoxic stuff. Synthetic carpets always outgas, wool

are much safer- mites or no mites. Dh hates wall to wall, though, even

for stairs, so we didn't go through with it.
