Guest guest Posted June 4, 2006 Report Posted June 4, 2006 hi Shirley, i am 63, in spite of the fact that i have a back that looks like an 80 year old, most people take me for being in my 50's. i have struggled with back pain for 30 years and have finally found some relief, am walking taller and feeling younger. i do not sweat it when people talk about us " old folks " because they will be there soon enough and find that life is very, very different. and yet, i would not go back to my 40s for anything, even if i was able to run marathons and ran 40 miles on my 40th birthday. my body may be a challenge at times now but i like my crony wisdom, patience, tolerance, compassion, understanding and the ability to live in the Now. as for the methadone, as i said, i took for awhile a couple of years ago and had not problems with it. what works for one person, may not for another and it probably has nothing to do with age. Carlene in MT Re: Methadone and personal pain management Pain knows no age. Do not judge the 60's as you will soon be there and see that nothing hurts less at 49 than it does at 60. Why classify pain by age and give the bad shit to us OLD folks as we are past being useful to society?! Thanks for that info, now that I am duly informed about pain and age, I can hardly wait to be 60 so us olddies can be drugged and sit slobbering in a chair back in the corner. Please be kinder in your thoughts. Old age doesn't begin at the magic number of 60, but I bet when you were 39 it began at 50. For a well informed group that was a really bad statement. I suppose that in that situation, you have already ruled out surgery and plan on taking the methadone for the rest of your life . . . seems mighty rough for a young person, I agree. Not to mention that new treatments are always coming along, why make a young person dependent on methadone and then have them go through withdrawal? I think they should restrict methadone Rx's to old folks, maybe 60+? (Sorry if any of you out there take offense at being called " old " ! I'm 49 myself and not getting any younger!) One of the things I hate the *most* about having a back problem is the decisions you have to make, every single day, about whether you should take your pain meds at the same level as yesterday, take more of them, or take less of them. Day after day after day. Some days I'm willing to tough it out and skip some. Other days, the least little extra twinge--boom, I take a pill b/c I can't stand dealing with it. Just my personal pet peeve, I guess . . . I don't think anyone should take a med that makes them feel sick, by the way. in town, PA Quote
