Guest guest
When my asthma first hit with a vengeance, before every trip I took, I made an appointment with my allergist, told him where I was going and what I was going to be doing. In the early years, when my asthma was not under control, he would start me right away on prednisone. My children were still young and we were taking trips with them, so I wanted to at least be able to do things with them. In later years, he would simply give me a prescription for an antibiotic, and a pack/dosage of prednisone, make sure I had prescriptions for all of my other meds and send me on my way. I have never missed a trip, yet, have been to Europe three times, and while I have not always felt super good on these trips, I have felt good enough to enjoy them, thanks to my doctors. Both my allergist and my GP have always encouraged me to go on these trips, but have made sure I had what I needed to at least feel well enough to enjoy them. Oh--I have been on retreats with teenagers (that was a trip!!!!!) in the hill country with tons of mountain cedar (juniper), field trips with teenagers, out of town conventions and workshops, and survived! I do have to admit that sometimes I was sick after the trips because it is hard to get enough rest on trips of any kind for me. Glad you survived and that the xolair is helping you. It is better if you can stay off of the pred. Hope all of you make it through the holiday season okay. Have you gotten your flu shot? I get mine next week when I visit my GP. What about pneumonia shots? Have you gotten yours if you need it?????? Check with your doctors.........My allergist has always been really big on prevention of problems. Sometimes that isn't always possible, but that's his philosophy, anyway. I just remembered I have a story to tell. Twenty years ago when my asthma was first diagnosed, I made my husband go with me to one of my doctor's appointments with the allergist. My husband, at the end of the visit and hearing what all the doctor wanted me to take, remarked to the doctor: " Wouldn't it be great to look ahead 20 years and see what advances in the treatment of asthma lie ahead! " He thought maybe the doc took offense that he implied the doc wasn't giving me the best treatment then he knew how. But three months ago when I started on xolair, we talked about his comment to the doctor twenty years ago! And while there have been new drugs and inhalers that have come out, the BIGGEST advancement has been the finding, creation and approval of xolair for allergic asthmatics!!!! My allergist commented to me on Monday that it would have been great if xolair had been around twenty years ago!!!!!! I just thought that was very interesting.....Wonder what will be in the offing twenty years from now----I just thank God for the researchers and lab technicians who are working diligently on new ways to treat asthma and possible cures. Have a great rest of the week and weekend--breathe easy! Adah asperqu <asperqu@...> wrote: I just returned from a vacation to East Tennessee. I haven't been home in over a year. I got through weather changes, family(including a 4 & 2 yr old),and alot of pollens, dogs, and leaves. Last 2 times it threw me into major attacks. This time I went with a fresh dose of xolair in my system. I had to use my rescue inhalor more than normal, but not my nebulizer or stronger meds. I've coughed more but I can control it with OTC meds. I almost feel like a " normal " person again. Thank God. becki --------------------------------- How low will we go?
