Kathy...

You are one amazing babe. An outing 6 days from surgery. It's all about

attitude sometimes. :-)

> Good morning everyone - Well, it's been one week since my posterior portion of

my revision & I almost feel guilty about how great I feel. My surgery went

" very well " according to Dr Hu. There was a moment when the alarms went off

because I " lost movement " . Dr Hu found and removed a piece of bone & everything

went back to normal. That was scarey, since I have permanent paralysis on my

left leg from my first surgery back in 1979. As you have all heard, my hospital

stay was short & my recovery was good. UCSF's caring & compassionate staff made

SUCH a difference. I have never been so well cared for in any hospital. I had

a great 300 mile ride home in the back of my cousins's car, lying on a ton of

feather pillows. It felt like I crawled in & laid on a cloud =)

> There was some concern about how my 3 large dogs were going to act. They

have all fallen right in line & have been ever so gentle with their wounded

MaMa. I felt good enough yesterday to go to the pharmacy to pick up supplies &

prescriptions with my cousin. " Thrilling " does not begin to describe how it

felt to walk around & look people in the eyes, instead of staring at the ground.

My cousin said that my " agony lines " on my face were melting away & I was even

" glowing " . I did spend a little too much time being upright yesterday. I had a

bit of edema in my legs last night. It was a gentle reminder to TAKE IT EASY

!!! Even though I am only a week post-op & have another surgery to go...I am

in less pain now then I was prior to surgery.

> It is no exaggeration to say that this group...it's members... & the

shared information is 100% responsible for saving my life...waking me up from my

flatback nightmare & getting me one step away from my happy ending. Much love &

thanks...........Kathy

Hi - I almost feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone ! Overnight, I've gone from NEVER having a successful back surgery...to...Having a back surgery that is so successful that no one that hasn't actually seen me in all my flatback glory, is going to believe my story of how bad I was. I know it's not over yet...but if my anterior is HALF as successful as the posterior, I'll be one happy camper. Best of luck with your next surgery & I hope I get the chance to stroll by & visit for a minute......................Kathy

Kathy, You are a tremendous inspiration! I am THRILLED things are going so well for you! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your letting us know about your feelings in recovery. You give me hope for a future. One of the things I worry about is whether they will be able to medicate me post op as I'm on so much dilaudid and fentenyl. I hope you don't mind me asking if you were on pain meds pre op.? I really hope that you are in the 1st phase of a wonderful and mobile new life! Happy Holidays! Kate

Hi Kate,

My advice is to make sure that you tell your anesthesiologist exactly

what meds , and the dosages, you've been taking prior to surgery.

That will help the anesthesiologist determine what meds to give you

during and after your surgery.
