I survived having my first shot. It wasn't even as bad as I thought since some had said it takes a long time for the drug to be injected. Gamaglobulin takes a LONG time via a shot. Xolair was nothing like that. Maybe not as fast as an insulin shot, but not long at all. What took place procedure wise...signed in, started sniffling to the R.N. that I was scared. She is an angel. Made me feel totally comfortable, stating they have everything in the office for a full blown anaphylatic reaction if I were to have one. The office is 10 mins way from the major teaching hospital. They have never had any type of reaction from the 20 or so folks on Xolair, but one can never say never. (Side note-- in my bag I brought my epis, prednisone, zantac and benadryl...can we say over prepared?) No BP/Pulse Ox/or any other medical check before the shot. Got the shot. Then went into the waiting room where my friend was sitting. The exam room was WAY too small, and I didn't want a panic attack to start brewing. So...I waited 30 mins. I never saw the doctor, but after 20 or so ana reaction in my life time, I didn't think I needed too. Of course, all I'd have to do is holler, and I'm fairly sure there'd be a stampede my way (or fall over I broke down and took 1mg of Xanax, just so my anxiety wouldn't precipitate an attack. The doctor said the Xanax won't mask an ana reaction. All and all fairly uneventful. My allergy shots were WAY worse than the Xolair. I'd be toast for two days after those. My arm doesn't hurt. I scheduled for once shot every month. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I needed mucho moral support. After 10 or so ana reactions to medications, I was an absolute mess before getting the shot. Guest guest
I LOVE that you are able to laugh a little over your anxiety over starting Xolair. Good move taking a Xanax just in case. I was so chronically ill from my asthma before I started, that I had no anxiety. ANYTHING to get my life back. I really was at that bargaining-with-the-devil-for-my-soul point.
