lisa,

i was fortunate enough to only have the herniated disc

and had terific pain in my leg and was unable to stand

or walk. i had physical therapy and cortizone

shots.neither one worked. i didn't want surgery either

but it was the only option left. i had it, and i'm

able to stand and walk today. i'm 8 weeks post op and

still on nuerontin and taking physical therapy. it

takes quite a while for the nerve to heal so i still

have some skin sensitvity on my thigh. i wouldn't

hesitate to have any further surgery if it was

necessary.

good luck to you

I COULD USE SOME ADVICE FROM ANYBODY THAT HAS MAYBE

SOME OF THE SAME

SYMPTOMS THAT I HAVE, WHICH ARE SPONDYLOLISTHESIS,

SPINA BIFADA

OCCULTA, MODERATE DISC DEGENERATIVE, BONE SPUR, AND A

HERNIATED DISC.

HOW DO YOU COPE MENTALLY WITH ALL OF THIS TO TRY TO

FUNCTION ON A

DAILY BASIS. I HAVE SIGNIFICANT WEAKNESS IN MY RIGHT

LEG AND THAT IS

NOW GIVING ME SO MUCH PAIN FROM THE NERVES. I HAVE

BEEN GETTING

SPASMS IN MY RIGHT FOOT NOW. I DO NOT WANT SURGERY

BUT ALSO DO NOT

WANT TO LIVE THIS WAY FOREVER SINCE I AM ONLY IN MY

THIRTIES. IF I

SIT FOR AWHILE, I CAN BARELY GET UP AND START WALKING.

I WORK IN A

DOCTORS OFFICE, SO I SIT AND STAND FOR AWHILE. IT'S

VERY DIFFICULT

FOR MYSELF AND WHEN THERE ARE OTHERS THAT JUST DO NOT

UNDERSTAND. ANY

SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS!

You are right to keep surgery as a last resort. The weakness in your

right leg has me bothered. I suffered for years until I could only walk

about 50 feet before I needed to sit down again. Epidural Steriod

Injections did not work. I had a laminectomy WITHOUT fusion at

L3/4 and it was like night and day. I was totally pain free in about 2

days and was happy I had that surgery.

You should at least look at the surgerical options. A newer choice

for surgery is called " minimally invasive " and you might be a candidate.

One of the people who is very popular in this field is a Pittsburgh

surgeon named Dr. Jho. His website is www.drjho.com and patients

have come to see him from around the country to get his help.

Please check out other sites like:

www.microspine.com

www.spineuniverse.com

www.back.com

I know I've left some out, but others will fill them in. Remember, it's

better to be prepared. Knowledge is power. Also make sure that if

you have an OSS, you get at least one second opinion from a

NEUROSURGEON. Just MHO.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR INPUT. I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE'S A CHANCE

THAT YOU COULD BE WORSE AFTER SURGERY OR YOU COULD BE BETTER. I

THINK IT'S A CHANCE I GUESS YOU NEED TO TAKE. DID YOU HAVE WEAKNESS

IN ANY OF YOUR LEGS? I HAVE PAIN WORSE IN MY RIGHT LEG THAN MY

BACK. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND. IT CAN BE SO FRUSTRATING. I WANTED

TO GO ON INTO NURSING BUT IT'S AMAZING HOW THINGS CAN CHANGE YOUR

LIFE. THANKS! LISA
