Re: Another reason to start Xolair?

Fran,

It's possible that Xolair will help to prevent reactions to your allergy

shots; I've read a couple of abstracts that say just that.

I don't get allergy shots, but I'm highly allergic to many things and have

noticed a reduction in my reactions. I'm now at the one-year point on Xolair.

I've recently become able to tolerate some vitamins, which I hadn't been

tolerating before.

I hope your doctor will proceed with caution regarding continuing the allergy

shots -- allergy shots can cause full-blown anaphylaxis.

Best,

Meryl

Today I had a severe reaction to my allergy shots - itching all over

and feeling faint. The nurse checked my blood pressure and it was down

to 70/50 - scary. So I did the Benadryl/Claritin/lie down/drink lots of

water routine and eventually felt better and went home. But I feel like

I've been run over by a truck, really wiped out.

I'll be starting Xolair on Tuesday - hopefully it will not only allow

me to back off the steroids but also prevent future reactions to

allergy shots like I had today. That was no fun AT all.

I am approaching the one year mark for Xolair, where does the time

go? I am now starting to feel a lot better although the Dr has not

taken me off any other meds, I am down to 10 mg of pred a day plus

the inhaler twice a day, and I do not know how much steroids that

puts in my system, my body does not even like the low doses!

I was surprised to read, " I've recently become able to tolerate some

vitamins, which I hadn't been tolerating before " . I was taking

vitamins and swore they were " messing me up " , Then I thought I was

being a hypochondriac and just started taking them again. After this

I'm stopping again. They are not Dr ordered.

I'm curious, I do not take allergey shots but wouldn't allergy shots

and Xolair be counter productive?

Ron - I am glad you are seeing improvement on the Xolair and hope

you can get off oral pred soon!

From my limited understanding of the science, Xolair and allergy

shots together wouldn't be counter productive, since Xolair works at

a different level of the allergic chain. However, if Xolair works

well for a person, it should negate the need for allergy shots.

Hopefully Pat will weigh in on this and explain it to us. I do know

that I came off allergy shots COMPLETELY thanks to Xolair. Since I

have always hated them and they make me feel rotten for 24 hours

afterward, that has made me very happy.

Take care all,

Addy

Interesting thought about the Xolair and allergy possibly being

counterproductive. I don't think that would be the case. My

understanding of how allergy shots work is that the allergens in tiny

amounts trigger the formation of blocking antibodies that are not

IgE. The blocking antibodies do something to regulate/decrease the

production of IgE to the allergens in the shots. Xolair is actually

an antibody specifically against IgE, meaning that the Xolair

antibody binds to IgE thereby inactivating it.

I do know that allergy shots are continued when patients start on

Xolair. That was the plan for me but I'll find out when I see my

doctor on Tuesday whether I'll be continuing on allergy shots after

the reaction I had yesterday.

So sorry to hear about your reaction. It was a mild anaphylactic reaction. I

had several of those when getting allergy shots. Xolair will block the IgE so

it can't set off a reaction like that. It takes time to bind all of the free

IgE. Don't get discouraged. You will get better.
