I come and go- wish i was going more to the beach., And where have you been???? LOL I've been here - but a bit drained from dealing with 's behaviors. There has been improvement during the past 2 weeks - I hope this continues. I'll write more on that later. Also, TJ's friends are here almost every night. I really enjoy being around these young men (and women). Many have their first jobs and it's funny to hear them talk about how fast their money goes and how much is taken out in taxes. Anyway, TJ is working for the Ferrari dealership with one of his friends. is going to American University so I guess it's official that she is living back at home with us. She also is making wedding plans. At night, and Katey stay up late and watch videos - they are on the Buffy the Vampire series now. Gotta get to work! Guest guest
I've been here - but a bit drained from dealing with 's behaviors. There has been improvement during the past 2 weeks - I hope this continues. I'll write more on that later. Ok..it's now later...lol. We just got home from the Orioles game and just put Tim to bed We are doing the medication trials, trying to find what works best for . I had him at Kennedy Krieger in May and I mentioned to his neurologist that I felt he needed medication for his anxiety. He wanted to consult with the DS doctor and the local psychiatrist. That took over a month to pull off - and I finally got them exchanging email after bit me hard (I still have marks) in front of an urgent care doctor. He had to leave his special needs camp after the first day because of his behaviors. Vacation was fun for him - but on a rainy day, everyone decided to see Terminator 3. I took to see Rugrats instead. Our movie was out 15 minutes before the Terminator movie was out - so we walked along this neat outdoor shopping mall at Myrtle Beach. As we walked towards more stores (and more people), shut down and had to be restrained.. He pinched me so hard that I still have a mark on that arm, too. These incidents drain me emotionally. Tim asked why he pinched me and he told him he got scared. He also apologized to me hours later - without being prompted. Well, after getting back from vacation, I went to the local psychiatrist (alone - he told me I don't need to bring b/c he shuts down there, too). He didn't want to start him on something for his anxieties (like paxil), but he wanted to increase the respirdal (we took him off several months ago after not seeing too much of a change and rapid weight gain). He's now on .5 mg and we are seeing a difference (and a hearty appetite again). He's much more managable and is enjoying camp. I got notes home this week that he's interacting with his peers and having a good time. At night, he's become very lovable and affectionate - so, instead of writing on the list, I've been watching Shrek, Harry Potter, SpongeBob, etc. while enjoying alot of hugs from my guy! Normally, he would want me to leave him alone while he watches his shows. Tonight at the Orioles game, he really didn't enjoy it until the 8th inning. I noticed that as soon as the family in front of us left, he was engaged more in the game (cheering, etc.). Now some good news-- will have a male teacher this fall! There are 4 other boys in his classroom. Three are Barbara Curtis' sons and I'm not sure who the other boy is. The VP of the new school called me this week just to talk!! Wow, I'm impressed. HI I am so glad things are looking better I know I tell a lot of parents here not to worry, their child will leave one phase and move on to another (maybe a not so pretty one too lol) but my advice is hard to follow for myself lol sometimes I dwell on the negative and be blinded by the good. I think its the " fix it " in me lolol Sara's behaviors this summer have all been influenced by her fatigue, she's been getting up at 6am every day for summer school and sometimes she doesn't get to sleep until 10pm soooooo she's one crabby young lady by noon ... of course we hit the pool after lunch and the behaviors do escalate this week all of the girl (Halle, Abby and Sara) have been awful, fighting, annoying each other and whiny. I kept telling myself FRIDAY will be here soon lol Last night Sara told me at bed time that she was kicked out of the " party " ......a party they have on Fridays at summer school because she was bad. I looked in her backpack for more info and found the weekly note that said she was awesome and had great behavior all week. When I came back to question Sara more she was a sleep heehee soooo now Im confused. The note also stated they went to the park for the party and all had a great time hmmmmm Sara's summer school teacher was her teacher from last yr summer school, this is her second yr teaching and she usually teaches at a school nearby, Middle School Sped. She was very excited to get Sara again this yr. Oh well we have 1 more week of summer school, then a break and school starts back Aug 11th. Ooooh I do hope Sara will be a bit more complaint this fall, I was so hoping she would make a grow in this area over the summer. Keep your chin up, really it my adult son who is driving me crazy right now, his life is so full of drama that i feel Im living in a soap opera Kathy mom to Sara 11 (^) (^) (^) (^) (^) ,,,\)/,,,\)/,,,\)/,,,\)/,,,\)/,,
Guest guest
He definately has his good days and his bad days. The physical aggressions have decreased, but the OCD stuff still drives us crazy....and he's been destructive. I found a hole in my bedroom wall - I'm sure he didn't mean to do it (I'm assuming he did it) - he pushed an excercise thingy sideways and must have pushed the track too far. URGH! TJ will fix it next weekend. Re: messages??? , Do you notice at all the 's behaviors go in cycles?
Guest guest
Oh, , I can relate to this! Danny is finally doing better, thanks to his meds from Dr. Capone and techniques from Cheryl Knight. His episodes of ODD (passive resistance, destructiveness, yelling and cursing--his style, mostly unintelligible--, throwing and trying to hit) have gone from several per day down to only one or two, mostly when he is tired. Thank goodness! At his peak, he singly removed and broke the solid wood pedal board on my organ. Normally it takes two adults--one on each side-- to lift and move it. We saw Dr. Capone this week. He recommended upping this current med, but doesn't feel (and we agree) that the OCD stuff we are seeing is enough of a problem to need medication at this time. Did you know Cheryl Knight has left KKI? She's going to be sort of the " head honcho " for autism in the state of Louisiana. Very fortunately, she was able to convince the therapist of her choice at KKI to take our case. Danny turned 12 in May, and puberty is upon us! He is now 4' 11 " and weighs 91 lbs.--solid as a rock--all muscle. He can pick up all three of his older sisters! Bev Re: messages??? He definately has his good days and his bad days. Guest guest
Hi Bev. I didn't know Cheryl had left KKI. I told her she should write a book for Behavioral interventions for children with DS - she is soooo good. has been less aggressive- but more destructive. Today, he took wheel rims from a Ferrari (very heavy) and threw it on the aquarium that houses the lizard. The glass shattered -and he was oblivious to the damage. What did Capone put Danny on? is on .5 of respirdal. His seizure medication is also suppose to help with behaviors. You know, we should get together before school resumes. I've been thinking about taking to Splash Down. Do you ever take Danny there and if so, how does he do?
Guest guest
I forgot to add that went to Walmart with me - we shopped for 2 hours! Half the stuff I bought was for him - things he wanted (new video, stuffed animal, new CD's, new flashlight) - very much an impulse buying spree, but what the heck Re: messages??? Hi Bev.
