Hi - With me, the increased ravenous appetite, especially sugar,

started almost straight away..but I dont know how long youve been on

pred..if youve been on it a while you may hopefully be one of the lucky few

who do not have this problem, I hope so. Round face etc, it took a little

while, started to become noticeable to others about 5 months. Weight gain

almost immediately even tho I wasnt eating foods, only on fluids. Again,

hopefully you may be one of the lucky ones who doesnt find this too much of

a problem. We all respond differently. When you come off pred, any weight

comes off. , stop apologising, we're all in the same leaky boat..I

think Harper (?) is very wise when she said we laugh, cry, joke, share,

argue..thats what makes us all tick and so determined to get on top of and

keep on top of this disease and makes us all such a nice bunch of special

people. Big hugs! Take care. PS When were you dx with AIH?

Love Jan

I, too, am on coumadin therapy. Neither my GI or the hepatologist at the transplant center mentioned any problem with taking Imuran and Coumadin. Do you know what section or what page this info is in Dr. Palmer's book? I would like to bring it up with my GI doc.

Thanks,

Layne

Jan,

Thanks. Now you guys are all making me cry because you are being nice! You can't win with me! I'm a redhead. That's the only excuse I can offer!

I was diagnosed with AIH on January 6th. I've been on prednisone since January 8th. I'm only on 20 mg a day. I see my GI doc on Jan 27th and the rheumie on Feb 7th. I've got tons of questions for both of them and have already begun a list. I'm assuming that if my liver responds well to the prednisone, the dose will not have to be raised. I'm currently on coumadin because I have a clotting disorder caused by lupus. I read in the book by Dr. Palmer that you can't take Imuran with coumadin, so I'm not sure Imuran is an option for me.

Thanks for the info on the prednisone. I'm going to remain optimistic that I am on a low enough dose that I may be able to avoid the side effects. I did seem incredibly moody for several days after I had been taking it for 3 or 4 days. Don't know if it was the prednisone but that's what I blamed it on. My hubby wanted to know what was my excuse for being moody for the previous 12 years we've been married! I think it's the red hair - it does something to the brain!

Layne... I think what may cause a problem is the fact that imuran can

result in thrombocytopenia ( decreased platelets )

coumadin does essentialy the same thing

in thinning your blood. So the two of them together could increase your

PTT.. I'm not sure if they are contraindicated so much as your clotting

time should be monitored to make sure it doesn't get too high. It would

be worth mentioning to your doctors.... the Tx team must be aware of

your taking these two together aren't they?

Yes, all of the doctors were aware of my taking coumadin when they put me on Imuran. My coumadin therapy is monitored by a Coumadin Clinic affiliated with the hospital that I work in. If I don't have my labwork done on time they actually hunt me down by phone to remind me. I had a protime done yesterday and they had to increase my coumadin per the lab results, so I assume that everything is ok. Thanks for your reply, and we all appreciate your sharing with us your experience with this disease!

Love,

Layne

Layne,

You mentioned working in a hospital, are you a

nurse? You seem to have a kind heart which would be

nice for patients I think. I noticed that your email

address has forrest general, is that the name of your

hospital?

Jan,

So when I was eating like a horse right away it was the prednisone.

I thought it was because for weeks before they diagnosed me I was

unable to eat. Thought I was just making up for lost time and

tastes! First thing I did when I got home was make one of my famous

cream cheese and green chile omelets! In the hospital the day I was

finally feeling hungry, they did my Bx! And mistakenly brought me

this beutiful breakfast I think just to taunt me. I sat in envy as I

let my mother eat it for me, looking some what like Homer Simpson

when he drools.

Ruth,

No, I'm afraid I am not a nurse.....but I AM one of the reasons the nurses come to work! Actually, I am the Director of the Payroll Department. And you are very observant. The name of our hospital is Forrest General and it is in Hattiesburg, MS. I always love to read your posts because it is so apparent that you are a caring and compassionate person. Maybe it has something to do with everything we have been through. If that is the case, then our illnesses are a blessing in a way.

All my love,

Layne
