Guest guest
I have never heard this; but then I have not researched it. It would seem odd to me for it to be true and to never have heard it mentioned here. Quite a number of people here have reported not feeling well until their TSH was suppressed to below the bottom of the recommended range; and having no hyper symptoms while maintaining that level. In our litigious society it is possible your doctor is afraid of a lawsuit if he maintains you TSH level below the minimum recommended. 1b. I feel that they are hypothyroid related, as they are the exact symptoms I had before (feeling exhausted by 3:00pm, trouble controlling weight, dry brittle hair, aching in eyes and neck, dry skin, etc.) I am currently taking 125mcg of synthroid and 20 mcg of cytomel (T3). However, because my TSH levels are .03 (ref. range .4 - 4.0), he says I'm in danger of getting osteoporosis and heart trouble and that my symptoms must no longer be thyroid related because of my low TSH levels. He stated before I have no thyroid function because before treatment my TSH level was 97. However, now he wants to cut back on my cytomel. I am experiencing no hyper symptoms at all (no heart palpitations, etc.) However, he says he has a lot of patients who after being over medicated for thyroid problems for years, come back with severe osteoporosis and heart trouble. I'm fairly new to the thyroid world and was wondering if anyone has heard of this and how common it is. I thought if I was being over medicated, I would experience hyper symptoms. Anyone's input would be helpful. Thanks in advance, I learn so much from these boards. I know this has been discussed, but my memory isn't what it used to be after my thyroid gave out! Osteoporosis and cardiomyopathy are both common outcomes of untreated Grave's disease. Doctors ASSUME that chronic hyperT from medications will lead to the same problems, and that low TSH when taking thyroid meds has the same implication as low TSH in screening untreated subjects. This is one of the reasons why they are so gun shy about using T3 supplements or overdosing in general. To my knowledge the effect has never been tested in a proper double blind situation, because that would be unethical. Chuck
Guest guest
The main way to fight off osteoporosis when taking thyroid meds is to take a multi-vitamin with calcium support in it. As a woman, you have to, and most docs won't tell you that! They are such IDIOTS!! Also, to ward off heart problems, you must take fish oil, garlic, and calcium. You guys need to read!!! These docs are not going to tell you anything!!!! They just want your money! Fish oil is an essential omega 3 for all problems..... Many blessings to you all!! Guest guest
If you do your research, all thyroid medicine stips your body of a certain level of calcium. That is why I stated to take mutli-v. daily to prevent osteoporosis, not to treat it. My aunt is currently hypothyroid, and due to a lack of calcium over the years, now has osteoporosis. I just think that it is a necessity for all people, especially woman. > > Bev, > > I didn't know that Calcium causes kidney stones. I have never heard > of that. Guest guest
this is complete hogwash and misinformation. how can a multivitamin prevent osteoporosis? Do you know what calcitonen is? Gracia > > > what? I think this is a bit of misinformation. Armour thyroid which contains many Ts and calcitonen doesn't appear to cause osteoporosis and may prevent it. Calcium doesn't treat osteoporosis unfortunately. > gracia > > > > --- If you do your research, all thyroid medicine stips your body of a certain level of calcium. Guest guest
According to my urologist kidney stones are caused by different things and must be analyzed to tell their actual components. I believe one type can be " fed " by calcium, such as that in milk. But it's been years since I had one... 1a. Here are two recent studies: A year 2000 study of 10,364 Swedish women, age 49-69, of whom 768 were currently on thyroxine medication, showed absolutely no difference in bone mass density between those on thyroxine and those not. http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/1d62e2.htm V. Nuzzo, et al., Gynecol Endocrinol. 1998 Oct;12(5):333-7 studied 40 premenopausal women with non-toxic goiter on L-thyroxine suppressive therapy; result: absolutely no effect on bone density compared to standards measured several different ways. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=9\ 859026 & dopt=Abstract Chuck
