Hi, I was recently (about two weeks ago) told that I have AIH and am actually having a liver biopsy tomorrow (3/27/02) I have had elevated liver functions for quite some time and pretty serious fatigue. They told me that I had a positive ANA blood test. Is that in combination with the liver function tests enough for a diagnosis?

Or is the biopsy the confirmation. I think the doctor said that the biopsy would stage the progression of the disease. Anyway, I came across this group when I was doing my research on AIH and thought I would see what it was all about. Im a bit overwhelmed by it all.

There are a lot of sites with info out there but they seem to say pretty much the same thing, steroids... Does this mean im going to ultimately need a liver transplant??? Is that what happens to most people? ANy input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cheri

Cheri, I only have a moment to write before I go out, but I wanted to say hello. First, most people with AIH do NOT need liver transplants. And most, if they receive conventional treatment, live a normal life span. A biopsy further confirms the diagnosis of AIH. Although not even a biopsy will give you a 100% certainty, it will allow the doctor to be virtually certain. Prednisone with Imuran or similar drugs is necessary for most people.

More later.

Cheri, I'm back -- sorry to be so abrupt, but I have an appointment in a few minutes. Best wishes on the biopsy. It really isn't painful for most people. Remember to be quiet afterwards.

Harper, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, my computer apparently received a virus that my Norton did not contain. Therefore, I spent the days trying to backup my files....(I keep telling myself that it is importnat to back up stuff). Unfortunately, I lost all of my favorites...now I have to wait for people to let me know where to go! Oh well...could be worse...at least I saved my email lists!

Anyway, I was frantic to not be able to have the support from this group! I was glad when I got back up and going again~

I'm glad you're back, Debby. I heard from someone else (not in the group) this morning who has this virus -- on her computer in a museum! She's got problems.

that...broth...but I can't have broth because most of it has wheat. I do have some chicken broth, but it has fat in it, so that is out....so guess I will just drink pepsi, pineapple drinks, etc.....and mix it wish crushed ice so that it is like a slushy

debby

Debby, check with your doctor to make sure those drinks are okay. You don't want to mess up the test because of a drink.

Oh yes, I have never been on

steroids and I have bone thinning, this scares me more

than the AIH. I am wondering if I should just let the

AIH continue with out treatment at times? What would

happen? Having a hip replacement or spinal surgery

could be very difficult for me. I am only 47 and have

not had the change. I know I am in for a journey.

Thanks again Lynn in Rochester, NY

Lynn, I have only a moment to write. You MUST have the treatment if your symptoms are severe. A few people have such a marginal case of AIH that they don't need treatment, but that's the exception. And you can't go on and off the treatment, as I understand it. Talk to your doctor and find out for sure why you aren't having a biopsy. Ask about Fosamax for the bone thinning. More later.

This was a new virus called somelike Klez.bmm or something like that. It was identified by AVG, but not by norton, so for now, I am taking my chances and using AVG instead of norton.....

Wow, , thank you so much for that huge wealth of information. I will

print it out and work with it as I order the supplements and try new things in

my quest for health. I know it must have taken you a long time to write all

of that up and I deeply appreciate your hard work. As an aside, I just read

in my thyroid book ( and Karilee Shames' book, Thyroid Power) that

almonds are a thyroid inhibitor and I eat almond butter almost every morning on

rice bread that I bake, so that will have to be changed. Also, it said that

sorghum and tapioca are thyroid inhibitors and I use those flours in the

rice bread, so I'll have to be looking for a new recipe.

I do get chiro adjustments 3 times a week and would be miserable without his

help. He was the first doctor to suggest thyroid investigation several

years ago, although not being a medical doc., he couldn't order the tests. He

has helped me stay away from back and neck surgery, and now that I am going to

get my thyroid in better shape, I should heal better. I am so glad I didn't

do the back and neck surgery because the last two surgeries (kidney stones

and I forgot the other one) I had, I stopped breathing and had breathing

problems for 24 hours afterward and just read that hypothroidism can cause

these

problems with anesthesia. Because of this, I had to do a colonoscopy without

anesthesia-loads of fun-ha ha. Anyway, thank you again for your help. It

gives me hope that you could have gotten so much better that you can do your

daily life and take the time and have the energy to type up such a huge amount

of information. I appreciate your gift to me and the list.

Thank you,
