Hi,

I'm new here and have been reading many of the posts and noticed that

taking Synthroid under the tongue has been mentioned. Is this a

possible way of taking this and if so how would you do it, crush the

pill and make a paste of it or what? I have a hard time taking the

pill an hour before breakfast because I have to eat before I go to

work and trying to wake up at 4am to take it doesn't seem to work.

Last refill the pharmcist told me I could take it with food as long as

it was the same time every day, this is contrary to everything I've

read. I'm confused on this matter and really want to have this rx

work because I'm tired of being sick and tired.

Thanks for any help,

Barbara J

Barbara,

I too have always been told to take it on an empty stomach.

Relating to this........I have a question about sublingual administration

too. When I let it dissolve under my tongue it gets soft and seems to

disappear but never quite completely. So, in the end it just seems as if

the dissolved tablet disperses through my mouth and I end up in a sense

swallowing most of it anyway....

I'm not describing this right - but what I mean is, it doesn't totally

disappear from under my tongue no matter how long I wait - I'm thinking I

might as well just swallow it to start with.

Can anyone comment more on this sublingual stuff?

Although crushing the pill and holding under the tongue does enhance

absorption, a lot of it still gets swallowed and still will be subject

to interference from food or other pills.

What is most important is consistency in timing and intake. For example,

I drink coffee immediately after taking mine, even though this might

interfere a little with absorption. I still wait an hour before eating

or taking any other meds (which contain calcium). My Synthroid dose was

adjusted by TSH tests to match this daily pattern. Thus, the possible

interference is accommodated by a slightly increased dose.

If you ate the same amount of the exact same food at the same time

relative to your Synthroid dose, you could do the same thing, in which

case the dose would compensate exactly for the impeded absorption.

However, if you were titrated based on a one hour wait, then I wouldn't

shorten the interval to less than 1/2 hour by switching to taking it

sublingually. If you do, then test and adjust the dose.
