Thyrolar

:

You've just opened yourself up on that one.

No one needs to be on drugs for thyroid, if they have an intact gland.

I've gone over that several times.

In fact, no one needs to be on drugs for anything. Even diabetes responds to

some programs.

If people insist on going to medically trained personnel, they will come

away with drugs.

medics have nothing else to offer other than surgery.

Drugs and surgery and other medical interventions are the #! cause of

distress, disease and death in civilized countries.

If anyone is taking drugs for any health condition and they have not sought

help from a naturopath, chiropractor, osteopath, or PhD, then they must be

suicidal!

What does it take to shake people up to actual facts of life???

Hello Earl,

No, I haven't seen a naturopath. In fact I haven't

even heard of one in my area (Natal, South Africa).

The closest I have come to a Naturopath is Dr

D'Adamo's website (ER4YT). Will make enquiries and

pursue this course ... thanks for the advice.

I quit using Thyrolar .Once when I arrived at the pharmacy to pick up my refill,

the clerk was told to find it in the refrigerator.

Since I had never been alerted to refrigeration, I was greatly interested. Some

sources said it should be refrigerated and others

said not necessary. I was taking it more than once daily and had no way to keep

it cold away from home.....so rather than wonder

whether the potency was being affected, I switched to Armour and cytomel.

Ann

Thyrolar

I know I've asked this before, but we have new list members all the

time. Is anyone on Thyrolar? T3/T4 med? I feel good in the am, but

exhausted in the afternoon/evening. With the Armour tho, I was awake

too late. Take meds in morning.

PS My hair falls out more also when I INCREASE my meds, and so it's so

difficult.

Thanks Ann,

I have always been told to refrigerate it. Loses potency if not. ;)

I continue to be amazed, absolutely amazed, at the " sloppy " ways in which

thyroid problems are often treated. To refrigerate or NOT

to refrigerate is not exactly a matter of philosophical differences. With so

many variables physiologically and environmentally, it

would be oh-so-helpful to get the " givens " imparted correctly!!!

Just curious but why do you prefer synthetic? Most people seem to

prefer natural.

With the thyrolar, don't you have to keep it in the frig?

I've read that with Armour and the other natural ones that the dosing

from batch to batch may be different so you don't get exact dosing.

With the synthetic each batch should be the same.

I had read that about keeping it in the fridge. I'll let you know

when I get it.

Louise

PS Of course with the Thyrolar it has both T3 & T4 so you can't get

exact dosing with each hormone (not like you can if you were taking

each one separately.)

They do test Armour and it seems to be very consistent. The

synthetics get pulled all the time for that reason.

Plus it's believed that Armour contains T1 and T2 which they do not

seem to know much about.

Of course whatever works is great.

I am just a big fan of synthetics after synthroid and I LOVE armour.

With the exception of shedding my pounds, I feel a lot better on it

and I can tell when I skip a day or two (I have done because of

forgetting and I have done it just to see what happens or because I

didn't get refille on time).

I have to admit that I have't really tried to lose weight since

synthroid....I tried hard on that one. So maybe this one is better

with that too...I'm going to be trying to lose weight again if i can

get my act together.

It's always going to be harder for us even when our levels are

perfect.

Like I said the Armour has helped every single symptom of thyroid

disease I had...the fatigue, low body temp., thinning hair, cold all

the time, and water retention especially the legs. The only thing it

hasn't done is melt the pounds away. But I also admit that I haven't

really tried very hard with diet and especially exercise.

I'm currently on Levoxyl and Cytomel (T3). Simply taking the drugs didn't

result in any weight loss, although I did notice a considerable improvement

in my dry skin, feeling cold, depression and fatigue. My endo has tweaked

my dosage a lot...I see him about every 5 months until I get on a dose where

I'm feeling consistently good. I began the Atkins diet at the beginning of

Feb and have dropped 15 pounds and feel a whole lot better. It's the first

substantial weight loss I have had since having children eight years ago,

so that's significant. I will also add that I have always been very, very

active and athletic and managed to stay 50 pounds overweight even working

out hard 6 days a week! Now that my thyroid is being treated, I feel that

my body responds to changes in my diet and my exercise and the weight is

slowly coming off. But it was a deliberate choice and effort to make this

happen!

I think when you are hypo and you are overweight, the addition of the T3 is

key. I have a friend who is hypo, but is very, very slim and she is only

taking the Levoxyl and feels great. So, whether you get your T3

synthetically or from the Armour, I think it's pretty important when trying

to lose the pounds. But changing your eating is pretty darn essential, too!

Just my two cents,

Tracie

Well I'll start it today and let you all know in a week if I feel any

different. :) (When I told my Dr I didn't feel any different on

Levoxyl she said thay maybe my dose needed to be increased. Uhm no

because last year my TSH was .12 which put me with an overactive

Thyroid and I didn't feel any different.)

I am thinking about going to a specialist. I was in a car accident in

Jan so I'm trying to get my insurance straightened out before I go to

regular visits.

Louise

PS And it does need to be kept in the refrigerator.

Here is some info I found on Thyrolar from about.com

Liotrix

Pronunciation: LIE-oh-tricks ( Hear " Liotrix " Pronounced)

Brand Names

Brand names in the US/Canada - Thyrolar

Description

Liotrix is the generic name for the synthetic drug combining

levothyroxine and liothyronine (synthetic T4 plus synthetic T3). This

drug is not very commonly prescribed in the U.S., but is more popular

with alternative and complementary physicians, as the drug contains

both key thyroid hormones. This drug should be refrigerated.

Thyrolar Tablets (Liotrix Tablets, USP) are available in five

potencies coded as follows:

Name Composition

(T3/T4 per tablet) Color Armacode NDC

Thyrolar-1/4 3.1 mcg/12.5 mcg Violet/White YC 0456-0040-01

Thyrolar-1/2 6.25 mcg/25 mcg Peach/White YD 0456-0045-01

Thyrolar-1 12.5 mcg/50 mcg Pink/White YE 0456-0050-01

Thyrolar-2 25 mcg/100 mcg Green/White YF 0456-0055-01

Thyrolar-3 37.5 mcg/150 mcg Yellow/White YH 0456-0060-01

Supplied in bottles of 100, two-layered compressed tablets.

Tablets should be stored at cold temperature, between 36° and 46°F

(2° and 8°C) in a tight, light-resistant container.

Note: (T3 liothyronine sodium is approximately four times as potent

as T4 thyroxine on a microgram for microgram basis.)

And it looks as though the company that makes Armour makes Thyrolar.

We'll see how this works because the pharmacy didn't keep it

refrigerated.

I had been taking synthroid for the past year, since I did not feel

better (actually worse) I took my self off of them and found a new

doctor. I have been off of the synthroid for 5 weeks. My new doctor

prescribed Thyrolar-1. Can anyone tell me how long it usually takes to

get into your system?

Thanks,

Jackie

You shouldn't be taking your second dose in the evening. The

idea of splitting the dose of natural thyroid extract is that the T3 has a very

short half life, and the effect starts to leave your system after about 6 to 8

hours, so if you take your first dose when you wake up, you should take your

second dose about 2.00/3.00p.m. to keep the engine topped up. Otherwise, as the

effect starts to wear off, you will start to feel tired and probably want to

nap.

For palpitations, try taking 500mgs Magnesium, that usually

helps, and once your body gets used to that dose of NDT that pounding should

stop. However, if it is pounding because you are taking too much, then cut your

dose back by 30mgs for a few days, and if the palpitations have stopped, then start

by increasing with 15mgs only, and after a couple of weeks, add in another

15mgs.

You won't know if you need T3-only unless you give it a try

Luv - Sheila

I'm also wondering if I'm having a problem converting T4 to T3 - going to have

tests next week when I get the prescription for them so will see what they say,

but they don't do a reverse T3 test here so have no idea how to work that out?

I'm on 2 grains of NDT and notice that when I take the evening dose I get a

pounding heart after about half an hour, which continues for about 10/15

minutes and then calms down again. Is that normal? Also, after the initial

improvements, I seem to have stalled and am at a standstill, yet cannot

increase my dose of NDT as I get palpitations. I tried decreasing to 1 and 1/2

and 1 and 3/4, but that was too little as I got puffy eyes again. I could

perhaps still be iron and B12 deficient, which could be part of the conversion

problem - will see what comes out in the tests. So how would I know if need T3

only? So many questions...
