Hi Carol...

Sorry, I don't know the answers to your questions. You should call

UCSF and ask exactly what they need.

Should I just call the general 800 number, or should I try to talk to

Dr. Berven's or Hu's assistants?? The person manning the 800# just

seemed like a general receptionist when I called several weeks ago.

They didn't seem to know much. I also need to find out whether I

should send the original X-rays or whether copies would be good

enough for them.

I'm sorry if I sounded rude--I didn't mean to, and if you had already

answered before, I guess I had missed that post. It's just that I'm

in alot of pain today and I want answers!!! I just need to know WHO

to call at UCSF. Thank you for your response.

Carol,

Call the office of the doctor you want to see and ask which of your records they want. If you send the records to just the general hospital address not addressed to the attention of any particular doctor, they will not know what to do with them. It's a huge place.

Thank you--that's what I was wondering---WHO do I call? If I just

send records someplace, they'd probably get misplaced or " lost " . I

work in an office, and I know how that goes. Some stuff never gets

found. Have you been to UCSF before, is that how you know? I've heard

that Hu or Berven are good, so does it matter which one I call and

send it to? I guess I shouldn't send it to both--that could be

confusing. I just want to be evaluated and get an appointment set up.

If you've been to UCSF, then what do I do after I send them the stuff-

-sit back and wait for a phone call for an appointment?? How long

does that take?? Months???

This is the phone number I have for Dr. Hu--(415) 353-2793

Dr. Berven (415) 353-2793. Are those the correct numbers to get ahold

of them--or are there other " better " numbers???

I thought you had called for an appointment and been told that they

need to see your records. No? If you haven't done that, that's got

to be your first step. The appointment number is (866) 817-7463.

They should tell you what they need. I suspect that there's a shorter

wait to get in to see Dr. Berven, but I could be wrong about that. If

they tell you that you need a referral from another doctor, and you

can't get that, I can probably get either doctor to waive that

requirement.

I hadn't called for an appointment yet, because I thought that they

needed the medical records to DECIDE TO SEE YOU. When I called the

866-817-7473# a few weeks ago, the person said I needed to send the

records first, and then they DECIDE TO SEE YOU. I thought if they

decided to see you, then THEY make the appointment. I didn't think

you could make the appointment first........?????????????!!!!!!I'm

confused!!!!!!!!!?????? Maybe we need to start this all over again. I

have my records now, but the person said I needed to send them in in

order to be evaluated for a POSSIBLE APPOINTMENT. I just wanted to

know about sending them because I don't know if I'm going to get an

appointment or not. I just don't want to blindly send medical records

somewhere and them losing them and never calling me back. As I said

before, the person at that 866 number really didn't seem to know that

much. I was wondering if calling Dr. Hu's # direct or Dr. Berven's #

directly would be better to get more information out of the person

answering the phone. If that's the way to go, then I guess I need to

know if I have the correct numbers for Hu, Berven and Dervit or

whatever his name is. I just need some guidance here--I'm flying

blind.

I doubt that you'll get anywhere by calling Drs. Hu or Berven

directly. You should send copies of your records as requested

(probably no xray needed). Follow up by calling the appointment

number about a week after you send the records.

You're in good hands with either Dr. Hu or Dr. Berven.

What I meant was talking to their assistant or their appointment

numbers--I know I can't talk to the doctors. That 866 number person

really didn't seem to know anything when I mentioned previous

scoliosis surgery, flatback, that sort of thing. I could tell that if

I had them right in front of me it would have been the old " deer in

the headlights " look. There was dead silence at the other end of the

phone. Is this how they do it? You call the 866-816-7463 number and

ask them what you need to send to be evaluated for an appointment? I

just was wondering if anyone else had done it this way. It seems

rather dis-organized. I just would feel more comfortable sending it

to a live person, and then calling back later asking if that live

person had gotten it. People lose things all the time in offices.

That's why I was wondering if I called the one of the doctors'

assistants then I could follow up by asking if she/he got them and

then ask when I could expect a call back for an appointment. How long

does this take?? Do I have to wait weeks to hear back????

Carol,

Why don't you call back the " appointment number " and ask whoever

answers the phone to whose attention the records need to be sent in

order to be evaluated for an appointment?

Then verify the address with whomever you are speaking to and ask

them if you may call back in one week to confirm/make an appointment.

I would make copies of everything and I would send the packet to

them return reciept requested, that way you will know who signed for

them. If you are feeling like time is of the essence you can

Overnight them. (Alternativly, you can ask if you can send the

records by fax with originals to follow by snail mail but that may

feel like you are sending them into a black hole.)

Don't let the process overwhelm you. Doctors seem to have this

fortress around them, and until you find the magic gate...it is

frustrating. Just be persistent and surely you will get to where you

want to go.

Just my $.02, Cam

I think you may need to have a lot of patience. There is often a 4-6

month wait to get into UCSF as a new patient. Nothing is going to

happen quickly.

My advice would be to send COPIES of your records. Put a note on the

package that you're wanting to make an appointment with Dr. Hu or Dr.

Berven. Then, a week or two after you send the records, call the

appointment number to make an appointment. You may have to call back

several times.

Dealing with a university clinic requires a lot of patience. If and

when you get an appointment, you should be prepared for it to take up

to 4 hours. There is a lot of demand for the services of the best

surgeons. If you want more personalized service, you should probably

see someone in private practice. In that case, my recommendation

would be to go south and see Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia, or come north and

see Dr. Booth.

I'm going to call UCSF tomorrow, but first I'm going to call my

insurance to find out exactly what/who they cover. I will also ask

them about this Booth. I've printed out his page and phone

number from the internet. Hopefully both are covered by my insurance.

The insurance will be the big thing. I'm willing to wait, but in the

meantime I'll need to find someone/something for the pain and

discomfort. I don't know if there are " pain management centers "

around here. As I've said before, Central California is a " vast

medical wasteland " . They can diagnose flatback, but they sure don't

know what to do about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sharon,

Did you say you are in Pelham? I was there this weekend shopping

with my sister. I live in Lowell.

At 11:25 PM 4/2/2006, you wrote:

Perhaps you should make copies for Hu, Berven, and whomever, and mail

each

one to each specific surgeon. Then see who gets back to you

first. Or see

if Hu gets back to you first, or hu-ever.

(Sorry, I'm spring-happy-silly today!)

Good luck!

Hi, .

Yes, I was meaning to email you that we should get together. Another local gal -- YAY!

I've also been in contact with in NH, and , who is in Lawrence, near the Methuet exit of 93. and I went to the Boston dinner at NEBH together, but she doesn't post much. was going to come but couldn't make it, so I haven't met her yet. I should call and ask how her myelogram went.

Anyway, it's great to meet another north-of-Bostoner. And your surgery is coming up fast, isn't it!

Feel free to email me if you'd like to get together.

I would love to get together Sharon. I work full-time so the weekend

is best for me. Any suggestions, breakfast or lunch? Must be child

friendly as I am usually toting my 6 year old.

Hi, .

How about a sub shop? There's a Subway in Dracut that I just discovered serves veggie subs. (I'm a vegetarian, so finding food on-the-go can be a challenge.) That should be ok with a little one.

I'll just have to confirm the location with my husband. He drove us there, and I'm not great at remembering directions unless I have a map.

This weekend would work for me.

Take care.
