Hi Andy~ ( Ekenstierna) HR Surgery done in June 1981 by Dr Hugo Keim in NYC at Columbia Presby. Revision surgery done March 2005 By Dr Errico and his fellow Dr Awad at Joint Diseases in NYC. I think it is so neat that you are gathering this information and will look forward to reading your book one day!! Best of luck! I had my original scoliosis surgery in 1969 by Dr. Doherty at

Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. I do not know if he is

still alive or where he lives. I tried to find out a few months ago

when I tried to get my operative reports from HSS.

Thanks,

Nan

HI Andy,

I already responded to your first inquiry about history of surgery, but I just had a thought:

When I realized I would need further surgery, in 1997ish, I called Dr. Keim who did my original H-Rod surgery, for a referral. He was already retired but I found him somehow. We had a nice conversation and he referred me to Dr. Errico, in NYC. I don't remember Dr. Keim actually saying this, but I seem to remember that he told me he was referring all his H-Rod patients to Dr. Errico.

I am grateful for everything Dr. Keim did for me in 1997, and for my son in 1981, but I wonder how he and his colleagues feel about so many of us needing this difficult revision surgery. I would think they'd be disappointed (if nothing else) that they didn't actually cure us for life. I'm sure Dr. Keim's ego took a big hit. Do you have any thoughts about contacting some of the old-timer surgeons for your book?

RE: [ ] To All - Who performed your first fusion and when?

Hi Andy,

I had my Harrington Rod surgery in March 1973 by Dr. Gillespie at the Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital in Ontario. I recently found out that he moved to the States and died there (I don't know exactly when). He was one of the few that had his patients walking 2 weeks after surgery by using a Milwaukee neckpiece on the cast for the next 3 months before putting them in a brace (sorry I don't know the name of the brace but it had a plastic back with a canvas front that went from under the arms to the hips).

I was 15 when I had my surgery though I started treatment at age 9, with a body cast for 8 months (that was changed every 6-8 weeks) and then a Milwaukee brace until surgery (23 hours/7days a week).

Hope this is the type of information you want.

What kind of book are you writing? I always thought a book of interviews and

about the people who had surgery in those old ish Rite and Masonic

Hospitals would be a great idea. Those places aren't in existence any more

and patients spent months over a number of years of their lives in them. Not

just for scoliosis but for hip surgery and other orthopedic problems. I think I

was in one at the tail end of that type of treatment -- I've learned other parts

of

the country, like at Rush, did not use that type of treatment at that time.

I had my fusion, T6 to L3, with Harrington rod, when I was 14 in 1971 at Texas

ish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, TX. Dr Renning

was the chief resident who did it; I think he was at San Opisbo (?) in

California afterwards. Dr Lawson was the attending. This was in their

old building, with the old long wards with beds down the walls, when nurses'

aides took care of us, before they upgraded their standard of care (in the

1980s, I guess, I don't know when). I had halo femoral traction for several

weeks, and a Risser body cast. I was there for 2 months. I had DIC, a severe

post op infection, and other complications.

Hi Andy,

I tried to answer this online yesterday and got interrupted and had to cancel. Guess it posted a non-answer - sorry about that!

My first corrective surgery for scoliosis was in 1985 at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, land and was performed by Lt. Cmd. W. Esposito, USN. Dr. Esposito is now Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.

maybe I should also mention that Dr Maier was the first doctor my

mom took me to see since he had done my cousin's surgery.

He looked at my x-ray and said " I've never seen anything quite like

this " and then proceeded to discuss how he thought he could do

surgery to fix it.

He said that most of the patients he saw had their curves higher

up. Mine was down much lower.

We never went back to him. I remember thinking that if he had never

seen something like that, then how could he possibly be qualified to

try to fix it? Apparently, my mother agreed.

I seem to remember that she thought Dr Tompkins would be good

because he had trained at the Mayo Clinic with experts.

Andy,

I had my original HR surgeries in Oklahoma City at Baptist Hospital

with Dr. S. Fulton Tompkins in 1981 and 1983. There are at least four

of us on the board that were operated on by him. Someone has likely

already posted this, but he is retired and still lives in the OKC metro.

Hope this helps!

I had my Harrington Rod surgery in August 12, 1981 (I was 16). The

Hey, Andy.

My info is already listed in the database but here goes. I had 2

harrington rods put in just before age 12 by Dr Levine at Hosp

for Special Surgery in NY, NY. My curves were approx 40 and 20

degrees and I got about a 50% correction. He said I was one of the

least severe cases to be operated on - lucky me.

If you find the information for your book, I'd be interested to know

what you find out about the aftermath. How many of us hav had

revisions, with and without rod removal? What has been the

subjective success rate? Like the original surgeries, there has

been little long term outlook for revision patients. How many have

been able to avoid revision, for how long, and with what degrees of

complications?

I hope you are able to find information beyond the . I

was shocked/upset by 's post on how we are being covered

up. Good luck with this.

Elaine,

I am counting you! The fourth is Kathy G., who now lives in Florida. I

can't remember when she had her surgery, but I think it was between me

and Suzanne.

When you have a minute, I am sure others on the board would be

interested in hearing more about your story. You were one of the first

to have the original surgery and your experiences may benefit others

who are where you are.

It's nice to see you posting. Please ask questions as you think of

them - these folks know a heck of a lot more than me!

Elaine, I know one person, , who has had surgery with Dr. Ondra.

Try posting at:

/messages

and address the question to her.

There could be a patient or two of Dr. Ondra's lurking here, but I am not aware of them.

Good luck.

Hi all,

I haven't posted before, but thought I'd add my stuff:

My name is . I had my surgery at age 13 in 1989 at UW-Madison

by Dr. Mann. He's still there, and is very personable, even has

answered emails from me when I've had questions over the years.

I had harrington-luque rods (is this drastically diff from regular

harrington??) and was fused t4-l4. Was told I'd need to have a 2nd

surgery to the sacrum at some point in my life, but now have been told

they like to avoid that if possible. My original curves were in the

low 70s and got corrected to about 50-55 each. I have a lot of lower

back pain, especially the side with the lower curve.

I am 30 yrs old, have a 1yr old and a 2.5 yr old. I currently use a

walker & a wheelchair because I have secondary progressive multiple

sclerosis. When I am walking, I am bent way forward. Docs seem to

like to shuffle me back & forth when I have problems - neuros say it's

orthopedic, orthos say is neurological. I have a good neuro now, but

would like to still get my fusion checked by someone good. I have a

personal assistant provided by the state who helps with cooking,

cleaning, shopping, driving, etc for 25hr/wk. That has been a

lifesaver for me! My family & my hubby's family are also incredibly

supportive.

Anyone know how possible flatback-types of problems are in someone who

had an extensive harrington/luque surgery in the late 80s? When I

checked into it several years ago, most people seemed to think it only

affected those fusions from the 60s and 70s.

Thanks for listening!
