Guest guest
I have problem with short term memeory, for example I went to bank to withdraw money. Did the paperwork and walked away without money. Paid for something at cash register and walked away without package. This kind of thing happening way too often. Doctors would just say I was preoccupied. Not so. Just forget or feel confused! Guest guest
Dear Jody: I understand how you feel. I'm often forgetful and out of sorts. The other day I got so upset over a bunch of stupid stuff! I spilled a little BBQ sauce on my white pants and thought it was the end of the world! Afterwards I felt so dumb. Then my daughter spilled nail polish on the rug, tried to hide it and then tried to clean it up with Ajax. Needless to say, now there is this big bleached spot on the carpet. It's funny that the BBQ sauce on my pants bothered me more than the big white splotch in the middle of the living room rug! I can laugh about it now, but it sure didn't seem funny at the time. Maybe it's the full moon! Hope you're feeling better soon! Kathy (AIH) Seattle area
Guest guest
Jody, It's sounds like me three years ago, right before I was diagnose. Actually it was 3 years ago today July 29th 1996 when I was diagnosed with AIH with cirrhosis. My acne was bad and nothing cleared it up, not even Retin -A. I think the memory thing is due to the build up of ammonia in your system, which says to me that your liver function must be decreasing. The acne did not clear up until after I was transplanted with my new liver. If there are any other questions you would like to ask-ask away. I've been there ~ DONE THAT!! Lori C. Guest guest
Dear Eileen and : Next time you get LFT's, have the doctor check your ammonia levels too. High levels of ammonia can affect memory (although the prednisone can do it, too). Kathy (AIH) Seattle area

Guest guest
Dear I do that alot lately? My Dad thinks I'm going nuts I go to do things, and then forget what it was I wanted to do, I've also done really stupid things, like put polish in the freezer, it's a good job my Dad checked or the stupid thing would have probably exploded! I was sure I'd put it in the cupboard? My doctor said it was probably related to the Road Traffic Accident I was invovled in 18 months ago, but I'm sure it was never this bad? Guest guest
Jody, Even before I got sick, I knew that the liver was 'the center of life' and affects all the bodily functions, but having that knowledge didn't make it any easier to cope. As the AIH or cirrhosis progressed I had the feeling of being totally distracted, unable to process a thought from beginning to end. It was as though all my senses were magnified. The simple everyday things brought on an overwhelming amount of stress, but instead of yelling or screaming I found myself having what must have been anxiety attacks. Things which never bothered me in the past now seemed paramount. One time my boys were playing music very loudly at the other end of the house. I could feel the vibrations in my spine and it hurt. As much as I wanted to tell them to turn it down I was frozen, I couldn't move and couldn't even talk. The most frightening aspect of any progressive chronic disease is the loss of control over our body and mind, we know it's happening yet feel powerless to stop it. It can start a downward spiral, feeding on itself. I have no hints or advice because I got progressively worse. Has your 'whole body' doctor been able to offer any observations or solutions? Guest guest
Barbara, that is so weird, I totally experienced the same kinds of feelings, I felt like I was totally out of control sometimes. I would get so angry over the littlest things. That was about 5 years before my diagnosis. I thought I was having severe PMS!!!!!! Also feelings of anxiety and panic attacks. I was not feeling well and no doctor could tell me what was wrong. Yet my body was telling me something was wrong.I guess that is why the Dr. gave me prozac, he thought I was looney. Well guess he was wrong. Take care Lori C. Guest guest
Jody, Lynn and everyone else suffering from " brain drain " , I have off and on problems also with forgetfulness. Stupid things. I can fool around with my computer and do complicated things I've only done once and I forget my own telephone number half the time. I've always had a great memory (my kids claim I have a mind like a " steel trap " and never lose track of anything). I still have a good memory but I also don't, if that makes sense, and I'll bet it does to lots of you. I also sometimes have difficulty holding a conversation and finding the words I want to say, but no problem when I'm writing. I don't understand why it's working that way. I'm so incoherent sometimes on the phone that it's embarassing. Fatigue? I think it goes with the territory and some of it is physical, some is psychological. We are, after all, carrying a big load of anxiety whether we admit it to ourselves or not. Right now I'm almost impossible to wake up in the morning and I'm sleeping more hours than I ever have. I have vivid, realistic dreams. At night, I can feel great one minute then the next I can hardly stay awake. I need to lie down or if it's really bad, I sit in a chair, too tired to get ready for bed. It's like I totally crash all of a sudden. I wasn't just irritable before I was diagnosed, I was downright unpleasant. I quit a total of three jobs in three years because I decided that the people I was working for were jerks. In fact, they probably were, but that's life in the working world. Instead of just doing what I was hired to do, I felt it was my role in life to tell them how they exploited their employees and robbed them of their dignity (I'm not sure if that was even true or just my messed up perception) and each time, I stormed off the job without notice. Luckily, these emotional roller coasters don't happen much at home but I have a very patient husband. It doesn't make me feel better to know that it's probably all related to AIH, but at least I know I'm not the only one going through this! Take care, Geri

Guest guest
Hi Sue, that is me too. I had an excellent memory untill I was 35. Then all of a sudden I couldn't think straight and started forgeting things. Had to start making lists for everything. I asked Drs. and others about it and they said it was old age. I didn't think I was that old and it started just too quickly. So here I am twelve years later the same way and I hate it. I forget words in the middle of sentenses, I just draw a blank, but can remember later on. I would assume it is from aih because I was told I had it for years, and I guess that is when it started getting bad. Guest guest
Lynn, I have never had clinical depression but I wouldnt be surprised that I have a depression going on here. I have been waiting over a month to see a hepatologist in hopes of getting a diagnosis so that I can begin treatment. Plus, I've basically diagnosed myself and can see where my life is going as far as my liver goes and it scares the liven shit out of me. Im facing another new doctor. You all know what thats like. You get better odds at a casino than you do with finding a good doctor these days. the list goes on..so yes I have thought about the depression issue with regards to my brain fog..It seems to be from something other than just depression to me tho.. I hadnt told my partner what my fears were until a little over a week ago. He is being very supportive. What my mom said to me when I told her seems to be ringing in my head.. " I hope you decide to stay with us Jody. " that was a cold thing to say..and also puts the fear of dying from this.. I just want next week to be over with.. Guest guest
Jody, I know. So many thoughts go threw your head and so much fear, that is all understandable. It is really hard when no one around really knows what is happening and how you are feeling. People seem to think because you are alive it means it is not serious enough to worry about. My family (on my side) is no support at all and no comfort. My husband and kids are there for me, that is all I can ask for, even tho they don't know either. Keep talking to the group and letting us know how you are doing and feeling. Most of us have the same thoughts and fears.
