Guest guest
Hi Gracia, No disrespect, but I refuse to believe that my mom is screwed. There are NO Broda docs around here. I am telling my mom all the tests she needs. I talked to her for over an hour today. She is to the point she is ready to tell her PCP to admit her and run all the tests because she feels like she just can't take it anymore. This endo she saw should've ordered more tests. she told mom she thought she had nodules on her thyroid but didn't order an ultrasound...told her she thought she had antibodies but didn't order an antibody test...told her she didn't need treatment until her TSH got over 10. I told mom to call her PCP and tell him to at least do a 24 hour urine and check her adrenals. Mom also has info on how to order the saliva tests. I told her to tell him to do an ultrasound and check her antibodies. I am arming her with information and support, and she WILL get through this. In the span of 3 weeks, my mom has gone from a dynamo to virtually non-functional. I will not stand by and watch the life sucked from her! I mailed her my thyroid books and she is ordering others. She is learning all she can about adrenal and thyroid stuff. She WILL get back to her normal self. No one's gonna mess with my mama!!! I know what you were saying, but mom's PCP will do whatever he can to get her better. I believe that. how's your mom doing, Gracia??? any better? i've been wanting to mention something to you for a long time but keep forgetting. I worked with MR/DD patients for many, many years. didn't you say you worked in aroup home? {{hugs,}}sheila Gracia <circe@...> wrote: horrible. ridiculous. Guest guest
----- Sheila why do you think Mom needs MORE TESTS? Yikes. She could feel better right this minute with cortef and Armour. Compounded estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone have been wonderful for me too. Why do tests that aren't so accurate with docs who don't know how to treat what they are testing? The hospital 24 hr urine isn't going to be accurate but the one from AAL lab is good. My mother is almost in a vegetative state, even though I take her to very well known " holistic " docs. They still don't know anything about adrenals. It's insanity producing. I am working in a group home with MR adults, downs syndrome, cerebral palsy. Some wear diapers and are nonverbal. It's a challenge, but the health insurance is great. I would say that half of the clients need thyroid meds but are not getting them. One is on $ynthroid, too little, and has problems from it (indigestion, weight, anxiety). I gave my Broda barnes book to the administrator and am trying to advocate for the residents. Guest guest
Hi Gracia, Can you send me a link (no hurry) for that AAL lab? I would appreciate it. I know that your job can be stressful and challenging. I've worked with MR/DD clients for many years...started as a volunteer when I was 16 years old and then during college worked as a respite provider. Most of the clients I worked with, however, were quite functional. I've worked in the mental health field most of my life; however, I got really burned out when I was resident manager at women's center. The majority of the women had problems with chemical dependency, and I just can't stand to be around people who are strung out on crack...especially when you are LIVING at the center where you work and are being affected by their behavior. I left the center I think eight years ago (when Kemal and I decided to get married). Men were not allowed in the building after 11 p.m., so obviously this was not a job I could keep. Anyway, after working a lifetime in the field, I took a break and got a job in the healthcare field (not mental health). I think I'm ready to go back now and plan to start looking for something interesting. The problem is, as I'm sure you know, that the pay really sucks if you don't have a master's degree. I still have am about 7 classes shy of getting my bachelor's, but I'm not planning to pursue my academic career anymore...at least not for a long time. Trying to work and go to school (even just one class a semester) is just too much for me. I have decided to put my health first. Besides, my vocational counselor told me even with a bachelor's, I still won't get a decent paying job in my field. So, I will start looking around and see how bad of a pay cut I'll have to take...I'm hoping an inpatient job will pay better. We'll see. I think it's great that you're advocating for your clients. There are just so many people with undiagnosed thyroid problems, and so many could feel better if only they were treated. I found out that the docs at my mom's practice are osteopathic doctors. No wonder they are more open about treating her according to symptoms. My mom sees a physician assistant mostly, and we just love him. He has trained under this ostepathic doc, and so far, he has been great. He is going to start Mom on Armour, but right now they're waiting until she sees another endo this month. REgardless of what the endo says, he is going to treat her with Armour. Well, I've babbled enough...need to go work out and get outside and enjoy the day!!!! Take care and hang in!
