Guest guest
I am Karla and my son, age 13, was diagnosed with hypothyroidism two years ago. He is still having problems. He is on synthroid. I need to learn more about this disease for his sake and that is why I am here. He gained 15 pounds last month. He is not growing correctly -- out instead of up. His teeth fell out really late and even though he is 13 is not showing any signs of puberty. I am also wanting to know if this can affect him emotionally? The hypothyroidism? He seems to have a lot of anxiety and has been diagnosed with bipolar. I am wondering if all of this is related? Thanks, Karla in Indiana Viktor, Karla and Family I don't want to die! http://viktor.pedrovera.com

Guest guest
Hi & welcome here! Yes, hypothyroidism usually does cause problems with depression or anxiety. The thyroid hormone affects every single cell in our body (no exaggeration), so there's nothing it doesn't touch. I've read that many people who are hypothyroid get misdiagnosed and given psychiatric diagnoses when in reality the problem is they're just not being medicated properly. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, but the psychologist who did my evaluation said he really couldn't be sure if the ADHD symptoms were a result of my health issues (thyroid) or not. Anyway, you are welcome to post your son's lab results so we can look at them. How much Synthroid is he taking? It sure does sound to be like he's being undermedicated. Take care and keep in touch, Sheila KarlaKayAkins@... wrote: I am Karla and my son, age 13, was diagnosed with hypothyroidism two years ago. He is still having problems. He is on synthroid. Guest guest
How often is your son being evaluated? Does he get regular blood work and dosage increases? This disease absolutely affects you emotionally! There are many of us that have/ or could be misdiagnosed as bipolar. Is his doctor treating him for that? I know the medications they give for it are very hard for the body to process, especially if there isnt enough circulating thyroxine. My son Preston recently was tested and had a 3.48 TSH so, the doctor decided NOT to give him medication. He has a great deal of anxiety too, and is gaining weight and not getting very tall. Puberty seems to be coming though, and he is 12 I have decided to try and medicate him myself.. I have thyrodine and isocort ordered for him. I haven't really come accross any site with information specific to children...I will be looking though. stay in touch with us! Chriss.
