Guest guest
YES! , I've been dealing with migraines since I was a girl. About 3 months before I was diagnosed with Hashi's/hypo, I saw a neurologist. He put me on an anti-convulsant medication in attempt to decrease the frequency of the migraines (I was getting 7-10 migraines per month, with partial success at using Imitrex to knock them out). Anyway, the medication did seem to help a lot in reducing the number of migraines; however, that only lasted a few months. I can't say that it was Levoxyl that increased the frequency of the migraines. My neuro thought it might be because I was still undertreated for my hypo. I had one really bad time toward the end of Sept. where I had a 7-day migraine. Even a demoral shot didn't knock it out. (It did during the 24-hours the injection made me sleep, but then it came back). My neuro had to put me on a steroid to knock the headache. Anyway, once I switched to Armour, I went for 6 weeks without a migraine. Then I had a 2-day migraine during my menstrual cycle. Three weeks later, I'm migraine free. I've been off my anti-convulsant for about a month I think. So anyway, during the or 10 weeks that I've been on Armour, I've had only 2 migraines. That's a LOT better! Sorry you've been dealing with them. It might be the Levoxyl. It might be that you're undertreated. Or it could be that your brain is just not getting enough thyroid meds. That's pretty much what my neuro suspected. A switch to Armour might help. Hope you feel a lot better today, !!! I had a blinding migraine yesterday while working on the computer. Since I've started the Levoxyl (last July) every month not long after completing my monthly cycle, I have a migraine....took some naproxen, and was able to see clearly after about a half hour. Today I'm left with a dull temple headache. I've never had this many! Just curious...does anyone taking Armour that had suffered from migraine headaches have less instances of migraines? I've read that migraine headaches are also a symptom of hypothyroidism - so I figured that some folks might have some feedback on this. many thanks - enjoy the rest of the weekend! Guest guest
I used to get more migraines as well, they have been significantly reduced with Synthroid. I started out on Armour, which did not seem to help me. I used to have a migraine every day after my cycle for about five days. Now I might have one. If any... And they are not nearly as intense. Guest guest
Sheila, I am the only migraine sufferer in the family, and I also started getting them as a child, 2-3 a week (nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, the lot) from about the age of 11. Two points that could have acted as triggers, or the precursor to thyroid problems, as you mentioned : my parents got divorced when I was 10 and I was sent to a strict boarding school - loads of unhappiness and emotional trauma. Also, this was around the time of puberty, which is a fabulous time for hormones to be going beserk. Years of hyperthyroid symptoms were finally diagnosed when I was about 19. I can't help feeling that my Hashimoto's was lying dormant, and was set off by these events, the migraines being the first sign that something was wrong. I know there's a genetic component to migraines, but I do wonder if migraines are like some kind of precursor to impending illness or disease. They all have had these migraines since they were kids too.
