I heard from others that it goes a little rough the first time but better after that and many have felt relief shortly after their first infusion. Hope that this is encouraging to you. Good luck. Guest guest Posted August 30, 2000 Report Share Posted August 30, 2000 Time for Remicade Girl to POP in. =) My first treatment was exhausting! Not bcs I wasn't prepared. If most of you remember, I had that attempted break in the day before. So, I didn't get much sleep. And the way my treatments are set up you are in a room with up to 7 other people, plus 2 nurses and other doctors and nurses escorting other patients to the connecting exam rooms. There isn't much of a chance to get any shut eye there! So, my first treatment was miserable. Because I was so tired. Also bcs it was my first treatment and I didn't really know what to expect, I was a bit nervous. But all of them after that I really look forward to bcs I love visiting with all the other people who come for various treatments and share our " war " stories. And my nurses are great! Fun and joking around. I did feel relief the very next day. I probably would have the day I had my first treatment, but I was so tired, I had no idea, nor did I even care. I just wanted a bed. But the next day! I had to dig through my closet for my dancing shoes. The last treatment I had on Aug 9, I actually felt it working about an hour into the treatment! My nurse was impressed! *I* was impressed. So don't be surprised if your pain starts to go away right away! I hope that for you! It's time you got a break! But it could take up to a week. I have talked to other Remicade patients at the hospital and they said it took them about a week, so it is different for everyone. Don't be disappointed if you notice nothing at first. The hospital called yesterday and registered me over the phone, so I will be able to go right to the treatment room. I know the woman who called me from registration. She said she saw my name and decided to do it over the phone. We talk all the time, her husband has RA. I live outside of Philadelphia. I am hoping for some improvement but I know that it may only be a little improvement. I will take whatever I get, I am trying to be positive. I am hoping to be able to make it to my 1:30 class, however, I talked to the professor and explained things. If I can't make it, my friend will pick up my papers. I noticed today it was harder walking around the campus, but I did use my cane. Two years ago I could walk all around with little difficulty. My attorney sent me a copy of a letter he sent the people who say I should be working. It was a little nasty, yea!!! one for the attorney. He informed them that I will go on interviews, but he doesn't believe I will be able to do any gainful employment. The key word is gainful, it is nice seeing him in my corner. Attorneys can be difficult sometimes, especially when then don't call you back. I will let you know how tomorrow goes. I knew of one other woman who also utilized the school disability program and they were also very helpful to her. So, how are you feeling after your first Remicade infusion? Guest guest Posted September 1, 2000 Report Share Posted September 1, 2000 Hi Yes my RA is bad, but no matter what degree you have it, it is a bad nasty disease. Remicade is similar to embrel, except it is done at a hospital. Embrel is a injection done at home. For me, not for all this is a last effort as everything else has failed. It is hoped that remicade will slow the progression of the disease, it is not a cure. If lucky it should help with the inflammation and pain. Really the best person to answer all the questions is Rainy Sue. It was more tiring than before, but I know I can manage. I look forward to this semester, I so missed my classes during the summer. I wanted to tell you, if you have problems go to your schools Disability Department. They where so helpful the other day. They made it possible for me not to have to stand in any lines. The book store was unbelievable. Papers where sent to my professors explaining the problems, not in detail just what I need to make all this possible. I had to call them and Thank them all. Actually, I am going to give them some candy. It was harder walking around (took advise from this group and used my cane), don't think I could have gotten around without it. Lets cross our fingers for Remicade. Any relief will be welcomed at this point. Just wanted to let you know about disability. I couldn't remember if I mentioned it before. Hope you soon feel better, you have been in this flare for awhile. The woman who runs it, I think she may have MS, not sure on this though. She is a guardian angel, whatever the problem she takes control and solves it. The only reaction so far is a slight headache. I don't expect much else, actually yesterday was not too good. Nothing to do with the remicade, I just think going back to school kicking in. I was talking to the nurse I had on Wednesday. Next time they want me to move around more during the treatment. Hey, Sue do you have to do this? Not a problem, I was very stiff sitting there, so she is right. They where not surprised that I was to tired to go to school. How are you feeling, you had a rough week? Contact your disability department on Monday. First they may be able to work with you doing your work at home. They may even have someone tape the classes for you. My college pays these people to do things for them. They may also have someone take notes for you. They pay for this too, you don't , I think maybe the government may give them a grant for this. Second, they will probably take care of the book situation. Send someone to get your books for you. I wish you could meet the lady who helps me, she is a guardian angel. At Bucks they bend over backwards to help however they can. If you are up to it, just call them and explain what they problem is, I know they will come up with answers. I wish I could help you, I know how you where enjoying the classes. The best advise I can give is call them and talk to them. They want you to be able to help you do this. You need to work with the disability department anyway. So often since I started they have helped me. Little things come up and they are right there to help. If you should take a class and can't finish, they will try and get your money back. Let them know you are a student there with special needs. It's my own fault for putting this off, but between my husband rupturing a disc in his back and me on new meds, things here aren't so great. The classes are very technical, and I just don't think I am mentally up to taking them now. The online courses sound very tempting right now, so I will see how it goes. Thanks for your input. I was hoping to be in a marathon this week-end. I know they told me not to expect anything right away. School was so hard and the fatigue was bad. If I could just get rid of the fatigue that would be nice.
