Surprise.... I found out I was pregnant last week.... my main llmd

switched me to amox and took me off of everything else (I am

on still probitoics, pernatal & Calicum) But my local llmd seems a

wee

bit concerned about the risk being on amox for the entire

pregnancy.... one child with lyme is enough for us.... hopefully

number 2 won't get it... we have been told its almost 99% chance of

not having lyme if I can stay on amox.....

Anyone here have their experinces to share?

Feel free to e mail them to me at camerawise @ .com

I know its a touchy subject... I see a high risk OBGYN on thursday.

So far I feel fine, almost to good.... the best i have ever felt in

my

life, despite the fact I am off of the 8 meds I was on for a long

time!

I saw the other post about this but did not want to hijack the

thread.

thanks!

Krista,

It's very fortunate for you, that on this group, I know of at least two certified nurse-midwives (of which I am one) and one Perinatologist (a specialist in complicated pregnancies) who regularly view and contribute to selected messages.

I can address some of your concerns, but it might be in your best interest to have your doctor refer you to a perinatologist (or Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist as they are now being called). They are specialists with all sorts of complicated pregnancies and can at least advise you on your risks and monitor your closely (along with your OB) during your pregnancy.

You really should have your doctor refer you to a good nutritionist, one who is familiar with weight loss surgery and who can advise you on high quality foods that you can tolerate and that can adequately support your pregnancy. You really should have more calories than you're taking in now, but it depends on your size, your overall health and the recommendations of the nutritionist/perinatologist as to exactly how many. The protein shakes we take are especially helpful in making sure you have adequate protein and calcium for this developing baby.

I frequently have patients who cannot tolerate their sugar drinks and we cannot give them this one test for gestational diabetes. In these women, we fit them up with a blood sugar monitor and pretend that they DO have diabetes. They learn to check their blood sugars fasting and two hours after meals. They bring their values in to us for evaluation. If we go for a period of time with perfect sugars, we can just monitor them periodically. If they are "off" then we adjust diet and possibly start medication

I haven't heard of any other deficiencies associated with the sleeve. I would think a good Prenatal vitamin and possibly an OTC folic acid supplement would be enough. Iron and calcium supplements may also be needed eventually, but probably not this early.

I hope this helps. Oh, by the way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! You're about to bring a new life into the world!

Sally

Hi all! I sent the following email to Gaby, but wanted to throw it out to y'all as well to see if anyone had the same experiences or concerns/problems. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!!Gaby,I am 8 months out from my VSG and just found out that I am almost 6 weeks pregnant. Not the best timing on my part, but it is what it is!I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can help me with. My OB isn't that "versed" on the sleeve and I have some concerns with being treated conventionally. My #1 concern is the gestational diabetes test. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and am also still considered obese, so they want to do this test earlier than usual. My concern is that I do not eat a lot of sugar on this diet and the few occasions that I have, it made me terribly sick and I experience dumping-type symptoms. I am concerned with taking this test with the sugary drink because of the issues I have with sugar and in turn, making me "fail" the test....or even going into a coma with all that sugar!! Do you know anything about this test for sleeve patients or have any other suggestions for monitoring gestational diabetes during pregnancy without this test that I can recommend to my physician?#2: I have heard that a deficiency with the sleeve is folic acid which is obviously important while pregnant. Are there any other deficiencies that I should be concerned about and are prenatal vitamins typically enough or should I have additional supplements?#3: my physician says that I need to be consuming 2200 calories daily while pregnant. I told her that this was an impossibility with my sleeve and she didn't like that answer...can you give me a more realistic guideline? She also does not want me losing any weight, which again (especially these first few months while the fetus weighs next to nothing) seems like an impossibility. Do you have any experience with weight loss during pregnancy? I feel as though if I'm eating right and my vitamin levels are good, it should not hurt to lose unhealthy fat??I will probably post this on the forum to see if anyone else has and experiences or suggestions, but I would really like to know what you or Dr. Aceves thinks.Thank you so much!Krista Sent from my iPad

You only need to consume 500 calories more than usual for the pregnancy and MOST of world doesn't even do that and their babies are just fine. Actually the US has one of the highest mortality rates in the world so you will be fine on the diet you are on. Just increase with good foods like alvacado and meats. You do not need to do the glucose testing. It outcomes of babies are the same regardless of the testing if you research it you should just assume you have it (which is basically low carb) and eat that way through the pregnancy.  I had my first baby by the books and ended up with a c-section my second baby i did quite a big of research on and had a VBAC at home with a midwife. I had to pay everything out of pocket (including testing) so I stuck to the most important ones.

Congrats!!!

Sally,I do consider myself very lucky! This board is awesome and I'm thankful for the vast knowledge! Thanks for the congrats! I would have liked it more if my timing was much better and I had waited the recommended amount of time, but I'm not getting any younger (I'm 30) and controling my PCOS to start a family was the #1 reason I had surgery, so my hubby and I are over the moon....but concerned! The fact that I can even get pregnant is enough to make me cry and the fact that I AM pregnant leaves me speechless. I love my sleeve! When I saw my doc this week, she did put me on prometruim for the pcos and some fancy prenatals because of the vsg, but then doesn't want to see me back again until June when they will THEN do bloodwork andall the other tests....I was expecting that much sooner considering everything that is going on! So, I'm trying to

be as diligent as possible on my own for now!I will talk to them about the referrals you suggested as well as the alternatives to the GD testing. Even thinking about drinking that nasty swet drink makes me nauseous! And not because I'm pregnant, simply because I remember that drink from a prior test and the way sugar makes me feel!I will add an extra protein shake to my diet to up my nutrients and add another 160 calories. That is an easy enough adjustment to start! I want to do the right thing, but don't want to eat bad things just to eat the calorie "quota" and gain weight and/or cause GD!!Gabby is checking with Dr. Aceves for me and I hope that between all this great experience, this will be a breeze!!!Thanks so much!!! ,Thanks for the info! It is nice to know you lost without the sleeve and everything was fine! My doc did put me on some fancy prenatals, but doesn't even want to check my labs until June! What about now? This is a vital growing stage!!!Thanks again for your response and good wishes!!KristaSent from my iPhoneOn Apr 29, 2011, at 4:37 PM, " " <begoldin247@...> wrote:

I have two kids and was not sleeved with either but some of your concerns I had experience with anyways. OK so when ever I get pregnant I ALL ways lose weight, I eat what I want (not very much) but just don't seem to put weight on. My last preg the Dr was concerned as to how my daughter was growing, I had lost 15 pounds but it was fine and she was fine. Also with the folic acid they will prescribe you that and prenatal pills and also might give you Iron. Honestly I have seen a lot of women have baby's after WLS and as long as you EAT and stay active you and the baby will be fine. Good luck to you and yours!!!Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: "kristaacasey" <kristaacasey@...>
