Prednisone is another name for cortisol. Your adrenal gland produces 5mg naturally without assistance and during severe anxiety or crisis more is produced. Your adrenal gland stops working once a synthetic is introduced and cannot be stopped without tapering or a slow measured withdrawal. Remember that prednisone works with your metabolism and will literally reshape your body. It moves fat and water around in your body, collecting here and there, specifically your chin, face and abdomen. You can reduce side effects by reducing your intake or splitting up your dosage. I take 5mg in the AM because I need it most during the day. I use plaquenil and Ibuprofen to supplement it. I take 1 mg at night because I sleep through the night without needing more. I go up on it only in a severe flare. Prednisone will use sodium and caffiene in your diet to store water. Limit them as much as possible. If your body burns calories and doesnt store them as fat, you will see a difference. Fruits do have simple sugars in them, but they will only be used as energy. Eliminate as much fat and carbohydrate as possible. Add soy and high fiber to your diet. Eat a simple protein such as chicken, lean meat or fish, a veggie, preferably something high in anti oxidants like spinach, a carb source such as bread or potato but very sparingly. If you add alot of fruits and veggies, and keep your carb and fat intake limited, prednisone will start converting your low metabolism to high. You can reverse the side effects by understanding how prednisone works. If there is a natural alternative, that REALLY works, I would like to know about it myself. I have learned that due to a hyperthyroid condition which is common with RA patients, I have completely reversed the 50 pounds I gained via prednisone and a bad diet. If you can simulate a hyperthyroid condition naturally by kicking up your activity level and a very careful diet, you dont have to feel defeated or overwhelmed. I have had a normal functioning thyroid for sometime now which I never though would happen and have gained 5 pounds. Thats it. All by doing what I have been all along, eating small healthy meals and burning those protiens and calories as energy by being active after every meal. I dont mean working out but shopping or laundry should do the trick. Hugs, Deborah
