Guest guest
Nothing wrong with seeing a neurologist. A CT scan will confirm or deny sinus issues as the cause. It will also give insight into migraines. I do not like CT's beause of the XRays, either, but I am scheduled to have a no contrast CT on June 2nd because of my headaches. You need to keep a log of what he does, what he eats, what is happening. Does he talk? What does he say right before, after, or when this is happening? Just my guess, but his head is probably hurting. We are headed into summer, and maybe he has a head cold. Does he have sinus drainage? (runny nose) Too much TV and computer (or actually even very little) can cause a seizure. Have you had him checked for seizures? You can adjust the brightness of the computer screen and this may help. More information as to what was happening before the episodes would help. My guess is that he eventually ceased this behavior and he is not currently banging his head? What stopped it? The motrin cannot last forever and really shouldn't. (Which reminds me, Children's Motrin was recalled; if you are using the brand name, I would check it before continuing. My son had a severe mast cell reaction, 2 ER visits, a mast cell tumor/biopsy, and so forth from the dye free motrin.) > > If anyone can comment or give advice, please do. > > I have been on this board for a few weeks now with the same senario. 17 year old started flipping out and head banging for no reason. The meds they gave him for allergies have a panic attack component(doesn't take anymore) and IBS med has a psychosis side effect(doesn't take anymore) so now he is left with the pain. There is no anticedent here. He just stops whatever he is doing and starts mashing his nose or the top of his head and within 30 sec is beating or banging his head. After 1 dose of children's motrin he calms down but not completely. After the 2nd dose he is a different person. > > I don't know what to do. Don't know how to convince the doctor to look for these issues. All he will do is look at the tests and lab results and say there is nothing functionally wrong. The only person I can get a referral to is the neurologist. Does he need to be checked out by a chiropractor or an allergist? We would have to do that on our own. He also says that most mainstream doctors don't understand that head injuries can result in behavioural changes, moodiness, aggression, pain or other issues as a result. Amen prescribes meds based on his SPECT scans but he also recommends neurofeedback, which helps some patients do without medication. Guest guest
The scans were just done last month, after he started having the behaviors, because it sounded to the doctors like partial temporal lobe seizures.  I believe he developed ptsd because his anxiety and fear increased dramatically. He developed more ocd behaviors afterward, but I understand from what I was told that scans can't pick up deep tissue bruising. I received a head injury that took 8 staples and about a week to remember the accident. He is due for a cleaning next month, but has no fillings. No one smokes, but we do live between a large vegetable farm, a dairy and a chicken farm. *Wonder what they're doing different at these farms. Are you on well water? Have you had it tested? What is Naet. *Allergy elimination treatment using acupressure/acupuncture which can be done with a proxy. www.naet.com We do have chiropractors close. His diet is awful; no artificial sweeteners, but drinks lots of soda and eats KFC a couple of times a day. *Yikes! Have the sodas changed their " recipe " lately or is he drinking a different kind/brand? Phosphorus in sodas can cause problems. He has been doing this ever since the nutritionist said " Let him have what he will eat to get the calories in him " . He weighs 110 lbs @17. *Empty calories defeat the purpose. The episodes typically occur between 4 and 6 pm. *Before or after he eats? If before, has his blood sugar been checked? What time does he eat lunch? What else is going on at that time? Is that when other family members get home? Not on a yeast protocol. In fact, every thing I try for yeast sends him over the top behaviorally and we can barely stand what's going on already. *Has he been on lots of antibiotics over his lifetime? Have you tried American Health chewable probiotics? We get them at WFM. He can talk when he chooses to ask for what he wants or to respond in one or two words. He has a dynavox which he hates and doesn't understand. If he doesn't understand it someone needs to simplify it. Using the Dynavox or PECs I would ask about pain (particularly trying to determine if he has an earache/infection, (headache), UTI, or tooth ache or ask a doctor to rule those out. Those are often undiagnosed among nonverbal folks and often result in aggression/SIB. Any chance wisdom teeth coming in? He use to use a picture schedule and we are again in the process of sessions at teacch to do a new schedule and communications system. They feel that if he is in pain, his language goes right out the window. *Makes sense.
Guest guest
Hi Drissia, Sorry I misspelled your name earlier. Oops, I didn't realize they recalled the dye-free. Interesting that swing helps, that may be a clue worth following up on. Has swinging helped in the past as well or is that new? What about trying a swinging break at 3:30 or 3:45 to see if you can head off whatever's going on. S S Re: Desperate/Help Posted by: " drissia wright " ritzywright@... ritzywright Fri May 28, 2010 6:14 am (PDT) We do use the dye free motrin, except now are using an store brand since they recalled the other. What caused all of those reactions? We buy dye free so there will be no reactions. He has had an EEG to check for seizures and an MRI w/wo contrast. They found nothing. No runny nose; just stuffiness. The behavior stops when he runs down or we can get him calm enough to get in a swing.
Guest guest
Was it a sleep deprived EEG or scheduled to occur between 4 & 6 pm? Do the behaviors appear to occur every day between 4-6? Windows open? Does he have hypersensitive hearing or smell? What happens at the neighboring farms at that time of day? That's often milking time, I wonder if he hears and is bothered by the milking machines...or whatever feeds the chickens? Guest guest
Never thought of any of that. No, the EEG was not sleep deprived, it took place at one of his best times of the day 11am. It was done with a strobe light for a couple of minutes. The windows in this house are never open. We live on a dirt road. The dust would be too bad. We have a heat pump and central air and change the filters once a month. We do have carpet on the floors. He has hypersensitive everything. This week I had to go back to cutting the tags out of his clothes. From: Shepard Salzer <_Shepard@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Desperate/Help autism treatment Date: Friday, May 28, 2010, 5:40 PM Â Was it a sleep deprived EEG or scheduled to occur between 4 & 6 pm? Do the behaviors appear to occur every day between 4-6? Windows open? Does he have hypersensitive hearing or smell? What happens at the neighboring farms at that time of day? That's often milking time, I wonder if he hears and is bothered by the milking machines...or whatever feeds the chickens? S S Re: Desperate/Help Posted by: " drissia wright " ritzywright@... ritzywright Fri May 28, 2010 10:32 am (PDT) The scans were just done last month, after he started having the behaviors, because it sounded to the doctors like partial temporal lobe seizures. Guest guest
Good idea. I'll give it a try. From: Shepard Salzer <_Shepard@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Desperate/Help autism treatment Date: Friday, May 28, 2010, 5:35 PM Â Hi Drissia, Sorry I misspelled your name earlier.
Guest guest
We are on well water. It is hard water and has a taste like minerals, so we drink bottled deerpark and used a Brita filter for the other water. The only water he would come in contact with is in the tub and he stays in there as little as possible. Â He has always drunk Sundrop. We buy the canned Sundrops that are caffeine free because the regular have the most caffeine and sugar of any on the market. They don't sell bottled caffeine free. A couple of family members told us their doctors said they couldn't drink Sundrop because they cause IBS and kidney stones. They were doing better on Cokes, so we switched to Cokes a while back, but he doesn't care for those. He was just requesting to go to the neighborhood store and get Sundrop Icees made with regular Sundrop. Since he was just drinking more of those we let him switch back to caffeine free Sundrop. I know it sounds crazy, but he is drinking Sundrop again. They are addictive. What kind of problems does phospherous cause? That would be cokes. Sundrop has yellow dyes. Â Blood sugar is low 76 2 hours after he eats. Everyone gets home at 4 pm. He ate lunch at noon and has usually been out in the community for 2 hours. Â He has taken a lot of antibiotics. Started his life with low blood sugar and needed glucose. He was being breast fed in the hospital while I was on intravenous antibiotics. Came home from the hospital with a yeast infection. Funny thing was it wasn't from me. At 6 months had thrush. Most of his young life he had recurring sinus and ear infections. We have had him on probiotics of one kind or another for the last few years, but he seemed to have a problem with these last ones we got from Kirkman. 3 mil. lactobaccillus. Â My older son suggested that he may have impacted wisdom teeth, because he did at that age. The dentist is going to take some xrays, but said there was no indication; no swelling or anything. He does have 2 tiny cavities that will need to be filled within a few months he said, but nothing to worry about now. I know his allergies are bad. Â I tried to answer your questions the best I knew. Thanks for your concern. From: Shepard Salzer <_Shepard@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Desperate/Help autism treatment Date: Friday, May 28, 2010, 5:27 PM Â Comments interspersed. S S Re: Desperate/Help Posted by: " drissia wright " ritzywright@... ritzywright Fri May 28, 2010 5:59 am (PDT) No vaccines in a long time; no dental work either.

Guest guest
> > I have no idea. Drissia, I thought I'd pass on some info that I saw go by on a local forum, for whatever it's worth. There have been some posts lately from a few parents whose teenage kids, a few of them 17, are going through similar behavioral periods as you describe for your son. A few moms of boys replied that when this happened to their boys, part of the reason was related to sexual tension or impulses that the boys didn't understand or know how to handle. I don't know if this could be the case for your son, but if you think it's possible, let me know and I'll look up the info they shared of a website of a publishing company that sells books and videos that explain sexuality to those with disabilities and their caretakers. Can you wean him off this - maybe make some lemon soda with soda water, lemon juice, stevia, etc? Magnesium malate (the malic acid part of it) may help to mop up some of the aluminum buildup. > > > Blood sugar is low 76 2 hours after he eats. Everyone gets home at 4 pm. The bad oils have about a 50 day half-life in the body. Good oils have around 18 day half-life. Those oils are what allow his neurotransmitters and brain to work properly. See if you can replace the bad oils with good oils or start to supplement. YES Oils are good. If his gut is damaged due to candida or dysbiosis, it won't absorb those hard-to-digest calories anyway. You may want to look into digestive enzymes like Trienza, or at the GAPS diet; it's tough but helps heal gut. Avoiding gluten and dairy also.
