thought y'all would enjoy reading a snail-mail letter I received in response

to my concern over Governor Whitmans possible appearance of endorsing the new

Lyme vaccine.

Dear Ms. Olejko, May

21, 1999

Thank you for writing to me about Lyme Disease.

I have long been an advocate for educating the public about the dangers

of Lyme Disease, and I have consistently supported awareness campaigns and

efforts to stop the spread of this disease. As you may know, I recently taped

a public service announcement developed by the Governor's Lyme Disease

Advisory Council. The message should be aired later this month.

You should know, however, that I have not appeared, not have I ever been

scheduled to appear, at an event to promote a particular Lyme Disease

vaccine. As Governor, , it would be inappropriate for me to endorse a

specific product. Although I cannot speak for the initiatives sponsored by

the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the FDA, please be

assured I will do my part to encourage all levels of government to work

together in the best interests of those who are suffering from Lyme Disease.
