This tissue is discarded and unused, yet people protest the use of it for something that will help others. If a person is against abortion, which I AM, they should protest abortions, not the use of the tissue that will be thrown away and unused for anything worthwhile. They do not seem to be able to seperate the two. Until abortions are banned, they will continue. Why let the stem cells go to waste? Thats nonsense. No one is going to kill babies for the exclusive use of their stem cells! But yet people think that by banning the use of stem cells from abortions, they will stop abortions? Not in this life. I have heard others say, I would NEVER use any treatment if it came from aborted babies. Ok that's fine, don't use that treatment. But let others, who can benefit from it have the chance to use it. Want to stop abortions, lobby to stop abortions not stem cell use of tissue that will always be availabe, (until abortions are banned) but availabe for what? To be thrown into the trash? Guest guest
I am totally on the other side of the fence. Much stem cell research does not use an aborted fetus it uses an embryo grown from a fertilized egg and " sacraficed " to study. Using the arguments that have been presented would be akin to saying " Thousands of people die daily and are either burned or put in the ground. The bodies could be processed into high level protein to feed starving nations, or made into fertilizer to help produce crops. The fat could be made into soap and the skin into leather. " Radical, but no the only difference is that an adult body would be used. The advent of organ donation has shown that many people offer to buy and sell organs, though it is illegal. Would the commercial production of fetal tissue be next? Not impossible. Even the sale of babies for adoption has not been completely stopped. I do not oppose the research, but there are other methods to obtain stem cells. Cord blood and skin have been used with success. I say support the research using things that do not require the loss of life to obtain, be that loss voluntairy or involuntairy.

At least those babies that never had a chance to begin with have given " life " in what ever sense that maybe to each person who benefits from the use of the stem cells. Why let them be tossed away like trash? Let them stand for something to help the lives of others. Like organ donations after death. Are you going to use those organs after you die? NO. Are the aborted babies going to use the stem cells after they have had their lives ended? NO....And before someone says, but organ donations come from those who died naturally, and their lives were not ended on purpose, well no, that's not true. A person who dies naturally of " OLD " age they dont' want their organs, they are old! Guest guest
Medical people use the term aborted and abortion indiscriminately for both forced abortions and what the lay people call miscarriages. It is confusing. Fetuses that have been miscarried are just as dead, but they were not intentionally put to death. It's an act of nature. It may occur when the fetus is developing wrong and nature decides to give it up. It's a natural event that has been happening forever, to humans and other animals alike. It's also called spontaneous abortion. It's an act of nature. I think it's important to realize that there are natural and unnatural abortions when reading news articles. Reporters and medical people lump them all together, which is misleading and unfortunate, in my opinion. I have no trouble with the idea of using material from spontaneous abortions for research. Guest guest
Kat Correct as to the terminology. The problem from the use of material from spontaneous abortions are many. First, they are often dead some time before being expelled. Second the family often would not allow it sometimes preferring burial. Then of course, there are often severe cellular as well as structural abnormalities to start with. There are cases where it could be done with permission and I like you said, would not be opposed to those. ----- Original Message ----- From: KathleenLS@... Guest guest
The only problem that I have with using a miscarried fetus is that I feel the mother should have to sign a release for the use of that biological material, just as a family member has to sign a release for the use of a loved ones' organs or tissues. Ordinally, I would not have thought about it that way, but having suffered a miscarriage after 10 long years of trying to conceive, my mind can not wrap itself around using that baby that way, because I believe that life begins at conception. I know that science has other, perhaps not as convenient, but just as effective ways to continue with stem cell research that will eventually benefit us all, without having to sacrifice anything. Impatience and medical research are two terms that should never be put together. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KathleenLS@...> < > Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2001 10:33 AM Subject: Re: [] Stem cells for neuro diseases including CMT > Medical people use the term aborted and abortion indiscriminately for both > forced abortions and what the lay people call miscarriages.
