here of any Blacks or Hispanics with Lyme.....do we

dare to specify without appearing to be racially discrimating in some way??)

cubes of sugar containing a vaccination of some

sort around Kindergarten or First Grade??????

At the time I received my sugar cube vaccine I lived

in California....we moved back east to NJ and then to

PA where I grew up and went to HS. Does the

sugar cube ring a bell for anyone out there????

Sugar cube ? Yes I believe that particular type of polio vaccine did not

have the simian viral risks of the shot.

I just read the LA Times account of pianist Jarrett battle with CFIDS (

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome ). I believe that Jarrett is

an African-American, so sadly CFIDS affects diversely.

If Lyme appears to affect one group disproportionately perhaps it is more a

factor of where one lives or the quality of medical care.

Dear Magic,

I am 46, haven't worked for 2 years and was diagnosed with Lyme (I probably

had it longer) in 1993. Wow, interesting Puts me right in that group. Lovette,

That was 3 years ago, and I have been sick every since. I think it may also

have to do with a particular demographic of people with computers as well. And

then people with the inclination to respond to that kind of a poll? There are

all sorts of variables to take into account.

Good point! This crude and unscientific poll is just for fun.... but it might

give us some ideas. If a scientifically valid poll revealed an unusual

percentage of Chronic, or Relapsing, or Refractory Lyme within an age group

like 41 to 45 then I think that this would deserve further investigation.

Perhaps the LDF could work with an academic to gather and analyze data like

this?

When so many of us are sick, and we know we have Lyme... and we know that IV

antibiotics makes a big difference , and oral antibiotics work sometimes or

slow down the relapses.... WE HAVE TO WONDER WHY DOESN'T OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

FINISH OFF THE INFECTION?

Is this bug that tough... all by itself?

Co-infections like Babesiosis, HHV-6, and Candida seem to explain part of the

puzzle.... but what if viral contamination of early vaccines is a factor that

might explain why some people are so sick. This is a fringe theory, to be

sure... but maybe its worth a look.

list consist of this age group. It seemed to me that the children's age

group was low, which I am sure there are no chidren on this mailing

list. I'd like see how this survey compares to the national adverages on

age related chronic lyme.

I remember the sugar cube with, I believe, the polio vacine in it. I

don't think that our age group has anyting to do with our illness. My

sister who also falls into the 41-45 age group is perfectly healthy

today. Remember we got bit by a tick.....

Hi Francea,

I am 49. I vaguely recall that sugar cube, I lived in Camden NJ at that

age....I will ask my mother about it. I also remember being among the first

for the polio vaccines....

I have noted since my bite at age 46, that most of the people posting on

the Lyme newsgroups and chats were my age....which I also thought was

strange. I think at a certain age our immune system weakens and that may be

the reason.

As for Black or Hispanic having Lyme, I see these races at my doctors

office, and he treats nothing but Lyme disease. Everyone is susceptible

unfortunately.

You have a point, it could be economically, people in this age group

have the financial means to purchase computers and go online. I bet the LDF

has information as to the most prevalent age group for suffering from

Chronic Lyme. I have filled out a couple long surveys for them.

I have chronic lyme and I'm a 25 year old female. I was 16 when I was first

diagnosed. When I was 16 and I was in and out of the hospital, most of the

chronic lyme patients were teen age women. My doctor said that for some

hormal reason women from the age of 13 through 20 tend to have the worsts

cases of lyme. I've talked to many other doctors that agree that there worst

cases are women in that age group.

If middle-class and upper-middle class white people, with access to " good "

health

care, have to go to an average of 8 doctors to be diagnosed, what chance does a

lower-income person have? And what kind of information about Lyme is availble in

Spanish, I wonder? Ticks certainly don't discriminate -- I'm sure there are just

as many victims in those communities, but they are even more poorly served by

the

medical community than whites.

I believe the sugar cube was the polio vaccine.

The vaccinaton was for polio vaccine, Dr. Salk, if

I'm not mistaken and winner of Nobel Prize in

medicine for the vaccine.

Hi Marci, I was just wondering how long before your relapse at 34 did you have

Lyme?By the way I am 24 and have chronic Lyme. I agree that there are many

other variables to take in account when considering the results of this poll.

I know of many others my own age who have chronic Lyme as well. and there are

hundreds of articles I have read dealing with chronic Lyme in Children .There

may very well be a genetic factor linked or some other biological reaon why

certain people become chronic and others get cured. I wish they would just

Hi Val,

The jury's still out on my original Lyme infection, but the summer that I

started actually getting sick with it was back in 1991. Then it took 9 months

to get a proper diagnosis, then my 3 week abx cure. I was at least 90% better

at that point, and my tests were negative, so I was deemed cured! I have had a

few lyme symptoms that date back to my teen years at least, but I was quite

active and healthy, so those never kept me down. Hope this answers your

question.

Dear Friend: I think that there are many parallels between polio and

lyme disease. One interesting factor is that there is now a " post-polio

syndrome " where the polio had apparently gone into remission, and is

now rearing its ugly head once again by making the patients

symptomatic. I think there could be something to this... If taking the

polio vaccine, which is not given in the same way to our children,

created some sort of antibodies or autoimmune response similar to those

who had the lyme vaccine, then we become chronic because our bodies are

fooled by the invasion of the lyme bacteria. It's a possibility worth

considering...
