Liver biopsy

Are you people talking about needle biopsies? I had laparoscopy and had no

bleeding problems with my biopsy/

Hi Jody,

When I had my liver biopsy, the put a huge packing on the site, made me lay

on it and not turn over. Had to stay like this for 4 hours. He he he, please

don't anyone be offended by this next statement.. Have you ever tried to use

a bed pan on your side and not be able to move, or turn on your back? Was

quite the experience. But the reason for this was the possibility of

bleeding. I also ate on my side, my daughter was with me for the procedure

and if she hadn't been I would have been up a creek without a paddle. She

did everything for me...

wow..they didnt do that with me at all. After it was over a nurse sat

and pushed on it for 5 mins or so then put a bandaid on it. I was on my

back the entire time I was at the hospital. I got up to the bathroom

within an hour. They checked my blood 4 hours after to make sure I

wasnt bleeding internally then sent me home..Its so funny how there are

so many differences within the medical profession..

I also had jugular biopsy (in through the neck and down the veins and

arteries into the hepatic artery (i think that was the name of the artery)

and then into the Liver. Iwas semi-conscious at the time (and don't get

grossed out by this) - could feel the scope going all the way down. and was

up and back on my feet in two hours with a small bandaid on my neck. They

did it that way because my clotting studies were low and they didn't want any

risk of internal bleeding since I wasn't clotting right. I think if I have

to have another one I will ask them to do it that way. It was a lot less

invasive, if you can believe that. and I didn't have to stay in the hospital

overnight. Really the worst thing about it was the anticipation. Once you

get over that you're fine.

(By the way, after the first biopsy eight years ago I had to stay overnight

(a 23-hour stay they call it) Boy things have really changed.

My husband had virtually no bleeding at all during his biopsy. He said he

felt a small trickle when they made the small incision, but no bleeding after

that. He had to lay on his side for a few hours, but was able to get up and

use the bathroom. Even after we left the hospital, he had to " recline " for

the rest of the day. He really isn't one to sit still so that was the worse

part of the whole ordeal.

The doc let him see the biopsy, he said it looked sorta like a Tequila worm.

LOL! After one of my liver biopsies, I was laying on my right side and the

nurse was gathering things up. I saw the litle jar and asked if that was my

liver. She said yes and did I want to see it. SO of course I did, and she

said " Wanna go fishing? " LOL!

It hurt so much to laugh but I couldn't help myself! By the size of it I

guess I could have caught a minnow maybe.

how horrible when you had your biospy. they did not put me to sleep like they

said they would, but i did not feel any pain. i dont look forward to them,

but probably would not balk at another one. the thing that bothers me is i am

not able to take my regular meds before the procedure and i take a heart pill

every day and a high blood pressure pill as well as my insulin.

Hello. I'm sorry to hear you've been ill. I can tell you how the biopsy

went for me, and what my HMO told me to expect.

I saw a doctor at 5:30 one evening and a biopsy was set up for 7:30 the next

morning. The biopsy itself took a few seconds and was no more painful than

some shots I've had. The difficult part was staying very still, in the

position required, opn a hospital bed for a couple of hours afterward. One

must stay still to prevent internal bleeding. I had brought an easy-to-hold

book, which helped the time pass. Be sure to use the bathroom before the

biopsy, as it will be a while before you are permitted to get up! By

mid-afternoon I was allowed to go home; you'll need someone to drive you.

I was a little sore for a few days, but I've been more uncomfortable often

from doing sit-ups; it was not a major problem. The HMO instructions said to

rest the next day and to resume normal activities the following day. I later

found a book that said you shouldn't be more than an hour from a hospital for

a couple of weeks, just in case internal bleeding started. Wish I'd known

before, but all went well.

I felt very sleepy and tired for several days, but I think that was due to

the effects of my illness rather than from the biopsy. I had been told I

wouldn't be able to return to work for a long time (it's been seven months

now) because of my illness, so I don't know if the biopsy would have kept me

out of work for more than two days.

The " incision " , incidentally, was a circle about the size of a pencil eraser.

It healed rapidly. The second time I thought to look, I couldn't find a

trace of it.

Best wishes. The biopsy is pretty unlikely to cause you problems, I think,

and it will start you on your way to getting well.

Not to worry .......My biopsy was done through the artery in my neck,down through my heart, and into the liver. This is the way they will probably do it to you due to the low blood levels. You will not miss any work ( maybe a day to just relax ). It, and trust me, is relativly pain free, just a couple of pinches from the small needle to numb a small area on the neck where the probe will be incerted. No sedative is needed and the only soreness that you will feel will be a stiff neck that you will cause if you don't relax during the procedure. i havent done treatment so i cant help you out there but i would like to say

i hope you checked into every aspect of doing treatment prior to starting

if not i suggest you educate yourself as much as possible before undergoing

the combo

Hi, If your doc is doing the biopsy, he/she could give you the results right

then just by looking at the slides under a scope. If someone else is doing the

biop the results take a couple of days.

Sides begin about an hour or two from your first shot of traditional combo.

Interferon is a clone of the substance one's body produces to fight infection;

the initial sides are similar to the feelings you'd have if infected by a cold

or flue. The more insidious sides come later. In my case it took about a month

before I got seriously depressed and anemic( tired, dizzy, weak....). Everyone

is different. Many people begin taking an anti-depressant before beginning combo

to avoid what I have to say is a very unpleasant experience- one wants to be

able to maintain a possitive attitude about the treatment and one's chances of

success.

I want to caution you about the advisability of deciding to undergo combo

without even knowing the condition of your liver.There are a number of factors

that ought to be known and considered before one can make an informed and

intelligent choice about doing a treatment that will effect your entire life and

deeply impact those who love you or work with you and without a biopsy you

simply don't know whether the treatment is necessary at this time.

Well, that's more than you asked for and I appo;logize for running on. Hope you

do well and are one of those lucky few who have few sides and who clears the

virus.

I am sorry it has taken so long for me to answer you about the liver biopsy. Well I had one In January 2001 It takes about 2 to 3 weeks to get the results back, I do not know about the treament yet because my doctor said it was not approved to use both yet I can not think of the name of it right now. But please write me back and let me know how it goes because, I should have to do it by next year and I do not know what to expect. Hi , I heard that the FDA has put a hold on the Pegylated Interferon

for some kind of problem, i'm not sure what it's about. I do know that Roche

spokesman said an FDA review panel had raised questions about

clinical trial data for Pegasys, which uses a molecule developed and

produced by U.S.-based Shearwater Corp. If I get more info i'll be sure to

hope you're still with the group,,,I noticed a few people

unsubscribed lately.

I have another question; a few people new to treatment have said that

their doctors have not approved Pegylated Interferon combo,,,yet some

are doing the clinical trials,,,also I had read back in January that

on January 21st, this year, that they approved it...I know there a 2

drug companys that are in the process of manufacturing it...does

anyone have any thoughts on this?? Maybe I'm misinformed.

Welcome, Jacqui. This is a good place to find information or just to talk. I hope some of the group will have suggestions for you. Are you taking Imuran (or perhaps CellCept) along with the Prednisone? What are the other symptoms that are bothering you? Are you taking calcium supplements to prevent bone loss?

I was diagnosed about 2 and 1/2 half years ago and my biopsy was

undecisive too. The first time I tried to cut prednisone, I had an

immediate flare up. This time I went down, very, very, slowly--

actually over a 6 month period. I went from 10 to 5 to 2.5 to 1.25

and then finally I started breaking the 1.25 section of tablet in

half and taking this every other day,(it was practically powder!)

then nothing!!! So far(about a month)I've been free of it with good

test results. They upped the azath though--apparently to keep immune

system from acting up again. I have not lost weight yet and still

have considerable bloat. However, I do sleep better and the mood

swings are less frequent. Time will tell if I can stay off it and the

side effects disappear. Dr. says I will never be able to be drug free

though-the azath is a permanent thing I guess, no matter what

happens. So, maybe kicking steroids can be done? Good luck. Jean
