Lil,

I continue to be amazed at Xan's great understanding of OCD and CBT

therapy. In her book, Tamra Chansky says that usually kids do best

with the therapy at around 8 y.o., so maybe that's the " norm. "

Dr. Chansky, though, continued to say that she has been successful

with younger children. won't talk to me about OCD. Tonight

he was banging on the kitchen table again (he does it occasionally for

no apparent reason) and I, in frustration, asked him if the OC Flea

was telling him to do that. He said, " No, I just like to do it. "

Which might have been the truth or might not. Who knows! Or maybe he

doesn't even know why he's doing it. But *how* is a psychologist

going to reach him on this???

Hi Lil: My sons former therapist (Chief Psychologist

at DuPont Hospital for Children) told me much the same

thing about CBT for young children. Needless to say I

didn't listen either and refused to use the Big Gun

medications that he was recommending to our son's

pdoc. Instead I embarked on a search for the best CBT

therapist I could find in our area and lo and behold I

located Dr. Chansky! My son has caught on very well

and has weathered the waxing of symptoms using his CBT

tools. He was 6 turning 7 when we started therapy and

I know that if we had been able to access Dr. Chansky

earlier he would have done great even at age 4 or 5.

We most often appeal to his intellectual side and in

turn, helps him to name his OCD " Guys " and send them

packing! It is wonderful that you were able to locate

this list before starting formal therapy as you will

have lots of support and information from those of us

in the trenches. Regards,

My words exactly.

I also can relate to your daughter putting some space between herself

and you when getting yelled at, only to return shortly apparently

completely composed. How do they do it?! My son does that a lot. I guess

if I don't have the sense to put some space between us when I can't cope

anymore, he at least has the wisdom to do it for me. *smile*

Hi Lil, I'm so happy for you and Xan that he is doing so well with ERP. All

the pros in our life also told me that Kel wouldn't be able to grasp CBT

concepts until much older--her psych (still!) says 16 or so. I have to

admit she didn't get the cognitive part right away, but she believed in me

enough that ERP was the way to make OCD small that she was willing to try

this weird plan of Mom's. Once, by golly, it worked, she was " hooked " and

like Xan was fired up to boss the OCD bully.

Kathy R. in Indiana

p.s. there are parts of Indiana that are very beautiful indeed. Too bad

for me though, I've never seen the French countryside, but will take your

word for it that resembles southern Indiana! :-)

I haven't posted for a long time. I had the Botox injections four times. The first helped for about 8 months. The second about the same. The third and fourth did not help at all. That is when I went for the Heller Myotomy. ..... Bud.....

I think you might have shared it. I know I came across it and emailed it to

my college kid who is a terrible speller. She loved it!
