Has anyone tried the Model Me Kids videos for ages 5-12? (

http://www.modelmekids.com ) I am looking for a video that demonstrates social

skills.

My son is 7 and has been doing great on Andy's protocol. He has gradually become

more verbal (though still delayed), and now is obviously interested in

initiating social contact with kids he doesn't know (e.g., at the park or the

public library). At the moment his approach is to say a rather awkward hello

while waving his hand much too close to the other child's face.

If he didn't have an autism diagnosis, I'd swear he was a people person.... :)

Thanks,

Ann

Yes, I've tried the Model Me Kids videos for my son. I've also shared them with

his teacher and other moms that I've mentored -- and they have only recently

(and reluctantly, I might add) returned them - gently used and often played!

The videos are effective for a couple of reasons: 1) the actors are children,

and the activities are staged in real-world settings, making it easy for kids to

generalize and 2) the child can watch the videos in the comfort and privacy of

his or her own home. The understanding is often immediate. After one video

played, my son turned to me and said " Thank you, Mom. " He really does want to

fit in, but he doesn't know how.

If you have any doubt about whether or not your child will like these videos,

you can view a sample on the Model Me Kids website (preferably with your child

so that he can tell you if he likes them).

I've found that the videos were able to stand alone as training tools most of

the time, but if you run into a particularly difficult spot, you can order a

training guide to go with it.

Good luck!
