HI, I am new to this web site. Today we had Christmas with my husbands family. My mother-in-law is very ill. She lives in another town and does not have a lot of contact with the family. My problem is, I do not know what we can do to help her. She is an alcoholic and has been for SEVERAL years. We have taken her to the best doctors in our area, admitted her to hospitals and rehabilitation centers. She refuses to cooperate with any treatment plan that we or any doctor suggests. Today, her skin was a yellow/amber color with red spots on her fore arms and the whites of her eyes were yellow, very very yellow. I have never witnessed anything like this.

I'm sorry you're having these problems. Almost everyone on this site has Autoimmune Hepatitis, which isn't alcohol-induced. We may have experienced the intense jaundice you describe, but the causes and therefore the treatment and prognosis are not the same. Some few of us have had alcohol problems in addition to AIH, but that isn't common.

The only thing I can say is that cirrhosis may have affected her mental and emotional capabilities, causing her to be less able to make good choices or to respond to her family as her earlier self would have wished to. Ask her doctor to talk with you about encephalopathy.

Best wishes to you in this very difficult time. Perhaps there is a site for alcohol-induced cirrhosis that could be of more help.

Sam,

I am not sure if this will make thins any better or help. Both my parents

are alcoholics my father is 75 and she is 82. My father has been in denial

since I was young and my mother has been in treatment once since I am now

47. I had a friend who was in ALANON and I chose to go to learn and

understand what I believed was my problem. I also tried ACOA to further

understand unfortunately the group I joined was not productive to me

mentally and left. There is an excellent book called COdependent No More

which if you have not read yet you should. Not only is it helpful with

whomever has an addiction problem but also helpful for us who are living

with or knowing someone who has an addiction problem..

The second thing would be if she is this yellow that she must see a doctor

since alot of us have been jaundiced due to our illness. It doesnt go away

we all have learned that. I would suggest that you go with her when she sees

the doctor and that way you will know exactly what the status of her

condition is. Otherwise, you will be left out of the loop and many times

that is so much more painful for those of us in your situation. Good Luck

and my prayers will be with you and your family.

secretive about her doctor visits or lack of visits. We do not

really know if or how she is being treated. She looked so bad that

our children were asking what was wrong. This is bad when a 8,6, and

5 year old notice anything on Christmas besides their presents, let

alone someone whom they hardly know.

Does anyone have any information to let me know what we are up

against?

She knows she is very sick, she just does not seem to be doing

anything about it.

Thank you,

Sam

Thank you for your reply. I will try that book. We have gone with her to

what she claims to be " her " doctor. But when talking privately with the dr.,

we have found on different occasions that she has either only been to him a

couple of times and on one occasion, it was her first visit therefore he has

no idea of her condition. She will only see a dr. until he diagonsis the

alcoholism then she changes again with out transfering her records, usually

goes to another town. We are at a complete loss.

Thanks again,

Sami

Sam,

Your mother in law is very sick. Sounds like end stage liver disease. There is nothing you can do. She won't co operate anyway. To be that yellow her liver must be pretty shot. I apologize for being so bold. I have seen many alcoholics deny the problem there fore are not sick. Just make her comfortable. My daughter lived next door to an alcoholic and he died about a week before Christmas. In his case he quit drinking almost a year but the liver couldn't hold out. I will never understand how people won't value their lives the most precious gift of all.

Gayle,

Please do not apologize for being bold. That is exactly what I am looking

for. She is now in the hospital, as of Thursday evening, 12/27. The ER dr.

said he thought all that could save her would be a transplant and we all know

that she will not qualify for that. I just can not imagine letting myself

get in such a shape. She has 5 beautiful grandchildren, ages 8, 6, 6, 5, and

8 months. I would think that not being able to watch them grow up would have

been a wake up call a long time ago if it were me. But I guess that is what

something like that can do to you. She is only 51 years old. I just have to

wonder how much longer she has.

Thanks for your concern.

HI all

I just wanted to ask for advice. I have chronic Lyme disease

(10 years) main symptoms were fatigue and diarrhoea – food intolerances

etc.

Since treating with Ivermectin and Samento, oh and Thyroxine

and Hydocortisone for 3 years symptoms greatly improved but not completely.

Although I’d not had diarrhoea for about a year until I tried LDN! I

started at 3mls per night and went up to 3.5 after 2 weeks, after a week my

diarrhoea came back with a vengeance and I can’t stop it! Its been a

month now and I stopped LDN after a week of diarrhoea but I don’t know if

it was the cause........I’ve heard people say symptoms can worsen before getting

better on LDN so should I re-start, perhaps at a lower dose?

It is so frustrating as I’m losing weight and getting

weak again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Emma

you should check the filler of the capsules or try the ldn cream then you bypass

the gut.

May I suggest that you sign up for Dr McCandless; autism group and read the archives. It is a treasure trove of information on dealing with numerous gut issues and overall health. Sounds like you need to clean up your system to make LDN successful for you, too.

You do not to be dealing with any of the Autistic Spectrum of Diseases to benefit from the wisdom and experience of this very knowledgable and caring physician.
