Therapeutic Phlebotomy - how and where in Los Angeles?

Here's my dilemma. My TRT doc is out of state, and my primary care

doc does not approve of the TRT I am on. I can't give blood to the

Red Cross because of not meeting the donation criteria they have, and

I can't find anywhere that will do a " therapeutic phlebotomy " . Does

anyone know of where that can be done in Los Angeles County? The

local Red Cross and a couple of blood banks have told me they don't do

that. Seems funny, as I've read many posts in other forums about

blood donation where the donor states the patient next to them was

having blood drawn for excess iron, not donation. Any ideas?

Look for either a hematologist or an oncologist. I get mine done (east

coast) in a leukemia clinic. Here's the nice part - this is all

perfectly normal to them and they won't give you any guff about it at

all. I had a long look until I discovered people with many blood

disorders have to have this done all the time. After every three months

for a year or so, I only have to get it done twice a year now.

Hey, good idea! I tried contacting several blood clinics and none wanted

anything to do with it. I can't believe this is such a hassle.

On a related note, my test cyp dosage was lowered in June.

My hematocrit in May was 56.5, in July it was 55.1.

My RBC in May was 6.10 vs. 5.97 in July.

Are those improvements significant, or statistically the same? In other words,

I wonder if this is a sign that things are improving and might continue to do

so. In the meantime, I am in fear of a heart attack.

Your HGB should be in the range of 14 to 18 g/dL and HCT in the 40 to

52 % range. When these are high they also raise the Red Blood Cell

count and thicken the blood. That leads to an increase in stroke

risk. Yes, drawing blood will lower these levels. I dropped about

1.5 points every two weeks on the HGB with one unit of blood drawn.

You will probably have to find a hospital or clinic that will do the

draws. I was not able to get the Red Cross or any other organization

to touch mine. Watch the iron also.

Have you been checked for sleep apnea. If you have even mild sleep

apnea your body will be deficient in oxygen and the body will call

for more RBC to compensate. I had mine checked and after treatment

for sleep apnea my levels all normalized and have remained within the

normal range. You would not know you have sleep apnea unless

checked. Ask your Dr. for the tests.

Good Luck
