Guest guest
Anne, I haven't posted much due to a litter of kittens I am raising. I had similar experience with my toes. I let them go until they turned purple and the bottom of my foot was black - i had a bone infection.........but after all the hocus pocus on my toes, they were still swollen and sore, so I was sent to a Rheumy at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. He Rx'd Mtx and Prednisone. He said it was important to take both medications, it would take the swelling down and give me time for the MTX to take affect ( almost 4 months) then I would wean of of the Prednisone. That made sense and it worked. I got down to 5 mgs of Prednisone - started on 15.........and could not go any further. I am 56 and quality of life and lessened pain is much more important to me. Hope this helps, Carol M. in CA
Guest guest
Hey guys first of all i hope everyone is doing well. I had an something happen to me that i had not really experienced before. My ankle was so swollen over last weekend that i could barely move my ankle much less my foot and it was so pain full. it hung over my shoe. well i broke down and went back to see my inital rheumy and the first thing that he said of course was why are you here. I showed him my foot and he said what did you so so i replied that i had done nothing. well he then decided to after all this time put ome on methotrexate and predisone. I was anxious to try the MTX but scared about the prednisone. I havent taken any on the prednisone yet. He did give me a shot of cortisone and the next day my ankle had gone down some. I also felt much better. well now i am starting to stiffen up again. How long does it take for the MTX to start working. He also did get me so main meds to take but i have just been taking them at bed time. i do feel somewhat better right now but the effects of the cortisone are wearing off. Hopefully the MTX will kick in. I just wanted to update you guys. Thanks for being there!!! Anne
Guest guest
Dear Anne, I’ve had the same problem with swollen ankles. Water pills have helped me as well as cortisone. Did he only give you an injection of cortisone? If that’s the case, normally the side effects are very rare. It ’s when you take the drug orally over a long period of time or a large amount that you have a lot of problems. Unfortunately for me, I fit both problems. I’ve been on predinsone for almost 3.5 years and at times up to levels of 60mg. At least now I have it down under 20mg. Cortisone injections can sometimes help you almost immediately and other times they don’t do a darn thing. A lot depends on how good your rheumatologist is at hitting the right spot or finding the main source of the infection. If he did put you on oral predinsone, how much did he start you out on? As far as MTX goes, I didn’t have good results, but that’s not common for most people. It seems like a lot of people on the site have found it to really help them and hopefully it will do the same for you. Good luck and I hope your ankle is better soon. It’s miserable when they are swollen that bad and hurt so much. If you have any more questions on predinsone let me know. I’m looking up supplements now to hopefully combat some of the side effects I’m dealing with now from the long-term use. Take care and hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
Hi Anne, This is Carla from Nebraska...I am assuming mtx is Methotrexate?? I take that and have for the last two or three years. My specialist said it takes about 6 weeks or so before you feel a difference...I thought I recongnized a difference sooner but everyone reacts to meds differently. I have also had shot of cortizone in my knee as I have had swelling there. The shot didn't last but a couple weeks b/c I was working so much. I don't know if I think those are the greatest. I am not too big on needles. Well, good luck with the medicine. carla and jacques
