Dear Jane, Your reluctance to use one the store riders reminds me of the

first time I broke down and tried one. It was at Sam's club and I finally

decided that store was too huge to walk through. I knew there was no way I

would ever make it.

Well someone must have thought they would have a good laugh at me that day.

My cart was defective, but of course I didn't realize it until I was already

on it and in the store. For some reason, it went extremely fast. Most of

the riders I have used since then, at other place like the grocery store or

Target, are so slow a baby could crawl past me when I'm going as fast as I

can. Not so with this one. Since it was the first one I had ever tried I

figured they were all that way. I was driving around Sam's club like a

maniac. I had people jumping out of my way, and all I could say was " Sorry,

it's my first time...lol " . I think I ran into my husband's ankles about 4

times and he was the one limping when we left the store that time...and not

exactly smiling either. My problem when something like that happens is I

get nervous and I tend to laugh like crazy. So I looked even worse, driving

around at what seemed like 90 mph, making all the other people jump and then

laughing like a nut on top of it.

I also had a real hard time going in reverse, because reverse was just as

fast. It seems funny to me now because I couldn't for the life of me figure

out why they made them so fast. Needless to say, my other rides were never

so eventful or as exciting as the first one. My daughter still laughs about

that one and how she would see me zipping past everyone and unable to stop.

I've probably scared you off of these from now on, but actually they are

great and I love to use them when I go out now. It used to bother me too,

but I've gotten to the point where I either use them or not go.

I'm sure you'll do fine your first time and just remember it cant' be as

rough as mine was. Or as rough as it was on my husband I should say...lol.

love, Fran

Re: [ ] Re: weight gain and Humira

Hi Janet,

It's so hard to accept a " new normal " . Quite often,

when shopping with my husband at larger stores, he

tries to get me to try the " riders " . I'm just not

ready to do that and would prefer to hold on to the

cart as I limp along. Imagine the damage I could do

driving in a store! Yet that day will come.

After a recent trip downstate shopping with my 12 year

old step-daughter who wanted to spend a minimum of two

hours in each store, I had an offer that I may

consider next time. We had taken along step daughter's

friend whose mom has MS. The mom has an " Amiga " and

offered to let me take it along the next time we have

to shop with the kids. Atleast I'd be able to get used

to it before driving, literally, into a store. My

husband thinks it's a great idea...I just don't want

to have to resort to getting around that way. Guess

I'm too stubborn, and I have my pride, but isn't there

a saying that says, " pride goeth before a fall " ?

Something more to ponder...

I wish you all well, whatever path this disease takes

you down.

Warm blessings,

Jane

Fran,

That is the funniest story I have heard in a long time. I bet it makes you

frightened to ever go on one of these again. I could just picture this

happening to myself, speeding around the store and running into people. If you

were not embarressed enough to have people look at you riding in one of those

things when it is riding normal, then you were then.

Dear Jane, I agree that my first experience wasn't normal, but since then

it's been really easy. I was like you and Janet for a long long time. I

refused to use a wheelchair or get a handicapped parking sticker. I felt

like as long as I could walk I had to push myself or I'd lose the ability

completely. Unfortunately, I got so bad that I simply can't leave the house

unless I have extra help. Do I like using it? No, and I'd much rather be

limping behind a cart if I could still manage that. Right now that would

get me only about 20 feet and my legs would go out and I'd just have to sit

down on the floor...lol.

It is true that I don't go out very often because I don't feel well, but

when I do go, and I use one of the riders it makes all the difference in the

world. It might be easier here in Florida since we have so many elderly

people and so many people use the riders. Normally it's hard to find one

that is free. I hope you never need to use them, but just know that they

are there and sometimes it's better to ride then not go at all. Even when

the ride is a wild one...lol. Take care, Fran

Hi Fran,

You see now that is what will happen to me if I try to

use a store rider. I am calamity Jane, all kinds of

freak things happen to me!
