Gymnema Sylvestre is one of the ayurvedic herbs used in the nutriiveda.

When i did a detailed description on all the ayurvedic ingredients I skipped

this one since I was not familiar with the name.

I called my dad to ask about Gymnema sylvestre. We are not experts in ayurvedic

medicine but have know some because my grandma used to use lots of herbs for

various home treatments.

He told me that this herb has been used in ayurvedic medicine in India for

thousands of years to treat many conditions but used mainly today to treat mild

to high diabetes. It has wonderful properties.

His niece and nephew[my cousins] both in late fifties use it regularly once a

day. They take 1 tsp of Gymnema in luke warm water in empty stomach in the

morning.

My aunt[ my father's sister] is a chronic diabetic patient. She has been taking

this twice a day for the last one year. Two months back her doctor had reduced

her insulin dosage to half because her sugar levels had come down.

Details about Gymnema Sylvestre:

Gymnema Sylvestre is a plant which is native to southern and central India. The

Hindu word " gumar, " which means " sugar destroyer, " describes the primary use of

the herb in traditional Indian medicine. The gymnema root has also been used to

treat snake bites, constipation, water retention, circulatory disorders, cough,

diabetes, anemia, hyperglycemia, high cholesterol levels, fever, kidney &

bladder infections, liver disorders, malaria, swollen glands, liver disease,

stomach disorders, and digestion.

Gymnemic Acids have antidiabetic, anti-sweetener and anti- inflammatory

properties. The herb has been found to reduce the sugar levels when used for an

extended period of time. Gymnema reduces the taste of sugar when placed in the

mouth. The active ingredient in the Gymnema is gurmeric acid which has a

chemical structure similar to saccharose.

Here is the link to an article about Gymnema Sylvestre which reports about a

study done by a Kings' College, London , UK.

Coming back to linking to our kids-nutriiveda- gymenma sylvestre :

At first the name Gymnema Sylvestre was unknown to me. I did not recognize it.

But when my dad said that I know it as " Sirukurinchaan " , then I remembered my

grandfather used to take it.

Both in Chinese medicine and in Indian medicine the biggest inhibitor to voice

is said to be refined sugar. Even in the biomed treatments sugar is a big cause

for increase in clostridia. Clostridia inhibits speech!!!

So the amount of gymnema sylvestre along with cinnamon plays a key role in

controlling the sugar levels!!! This is indirectly bringing out all the babbling

, clearer speech etc. As I have reported my son has increased in babbling and

seems more aware of all that is around him since on the nutriiveda. His teacher

has reported more focus. We have tried biomedical approaches prior to this for

him. Please email me with any questions.

I take nutriiveda too, and I love sweets/desserts/ chocolate [my biggest cause

for putting on pounds]. After drinking nutriiveda, I do not crave for

sugar/chocolate etc. Its so fascinating when you put things together

Just my two cents.

Enjoy your day,

sowmya
