Guest guest
We use iron protein plus, a protein-bound iron. We also do this based on ferritin tests. His initial ferritin was 14. It has come up to 21 after more than a year supplementing. His DAN wants it up to 40. EJ > > Was the test for ferritin levels or regular blood levels of iron. I would not suggest supplementing iron unless his ferritin came back low. Guest guest
You may wish to search for old post on Iron and see what Andy says about it. My understanding of supplemental iron was that it is toxic and a no-no for Hg poisoning. In Hg poisoning the body creates a state of low iron in order to preserve itself from the damages of mercury. Both iron and mercury are serious oxidizers..the body makes every attempt to low, reduce or get rid of oxidizers to reduce cell damage. Since the body is unable to dump mercury, it dumps the iron. Supplementing does not usually correct this, and usually makes the person feel worse. The body will just keep dumping it. I can attest to this. For years I was anemic and they kept giving me iron to take, which made me feel bad and did not correct the anemia. It is finally corrected but that involved removing my amalgams and going through some chelation. You can increase the iron rich foods, and use cast iron cookware, and give ferritin, and get the mercury out. > > My son had a recent blood test which showed his iron level low - 25 > mcg/dl (ref. range 45-160). Guest guest
Dave, can you get your son to eat organic and/or grassfed red meat - particularly the juices and drippings from steak/roasts? Heme iron (from chicken, fish and red meat) is easily absorbed and I think it is a safe choice for mercury toxic people. This is a good supplement with heme iron: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1 & pid=2126 The actual amount of iron in this supplement is really quite low, but it is a much more absorbable iron than mineral or plant based sources so it is quite effective even at low doses. My mother, who has struggled with iron-deficiency anemia all her life, has noticed significant improvement on just one softgel a day. The softgels are large, though, and the liquid inside tastes quite strange (my son doesn't swallow any capsules so we have to open softgels if we want to use them), so those may be drawbacks. A good (and maybe more palatable) source of non-heme iron is blackstrap molasses. We use the unsulphured, organic kind. Using a source of vitamin C at the same time will help absorbtion of non-heme iron. I just found this very simple site on iron that may give some more ideas on how to boost dietary iron: http://www.nms.on.ca/Secondary/iron_is_good_for_you.htm take care Rene > > My son had a recent blood test which showed his iron level low - 25 > mcg/dl (ref. range 45-160). Guest guest
The blood test just said iron and did not say ferritin. We already use a cast iron pan for cooking. My son's doctor thought that he might have had a growth spurt and depleted his iron stores. Dave > > Was the test for ferritin levels or regular blood levels of iron.
