I am on 100mg of Imuran and I notice my hair thinning. My doc swears this is

not a side of Imuran but, I am not imaging this.

COLLEEN, are you taking Prednisone as well as Imuran? Thinning hair (and increased facial hair for women) are common side effects of Prednisone use. Most people's hair goes back to normal as the dosage decreases. You may see other "typical" side effects, or you may not. Most of the changes reverse with a lower dosage. If you are taking Prednisone, be sure you are getting enough calcium and weight-bearing exercise. Ask your doctor if you need Fosamax to avoid bone loss. Incidentally, Prednisone is a corticosteroid, quite different from what muscle builders use. In fact, it tends to atrophy leg and arm muscles.

The side effects appeared almost immediately for me, but I began Prednisone at 80 mg. The high dosage may have been a factor in the rapid on-set of side effects.

BEV, none of us are doctors, and I don't have an answer for the lymph node situation. Have you and your doctor discussed adding Prednisone or a similar drug to your regime? This (Prednisone or similar, usually used with Imuran) is pretty much the standard, basic treatment for AIH. There aren't a lot of variations, except in dosage. Perhaps the two of you should talk about the pros and cons of Prednisone in your particular case. Is the Inderal to control your blood pressure? The idea that AIH may burn itself out worries me a little; AIH isn't curable. You have it for a lifetime, and you work to slow its progress.

Do you have one of the basic liver reference books, such as the one by Palmer or the one by G. Worman?

I was reading the package insert of some prednisone and it said to take a double dose every other day to help avoid some of the side effects. I would not do that without talking to my doctor, and at this point I don't really care, but I wondered if anyone is on this type of regimen and what the results are.

I too have had pain and swelling in my groin area (rt side only). I thought maybe it was lymph nodes or a hernia or something. The doc told be it was wsollen lymph nodes - had a CT Abd/Pelvis but nothing showed up - Put me on antibiotics for a while. About the same time I had an abnornal Pap Smear - went thru a biopsy - it came back as Mild Dysplasia. I've also had a green discharge from bil breast which grew staph infection. I try to stay away from people with "BUGS" because of the Imuran - but I work in the medical field and find this difficult at times.

Dear Bert,

Has anybody checked you for discoid lupus(a skin form) or SLE(systemic lupus)? I know you've had a million and 10 tests so I would guess that they have but it seems like there should be some reason for the rash that the drs could identify. Hang in there, girl, we're all rooting for you!

It sounds like you are going to have an endoscopy, which is where they look down your esophagus and can check your stomach, too. I've had 3, I think, and they didn't bother me - the light meds are great. Don't worry too much about it, it could really help them see what's happening.

I used 300 000 IU injection on most of my pts who had Vit D < 10-20. Few my Bariatric pt's Vit D would not respond to one injection so started giving them 600 000IU. I found that there vit D still remain low 20-29 often starts dropping down if I do not con supplementing.

Please let me know if anybody had pts with endo barrier. We have one pt who could not keep even fluid down for one week after insertion.

We use a 600,000 IU injection in our office. We just started using it about 1 month ago, so we don't have data available yet. The indication for use is when a pt's vitamin D level is less than 15 or they have not responded to a treatment of 50,000 IU orally three times per week for 3 months. I only have had 1 pt on injectable vit. D. She had a biliopancreaticdiversion/duodenal switch about 12 years ago. She had tried mega oral dosesof D and her levels hovered around 15-20. She had seen many specialistsincluding an endocrinologist and it was determined that she just could notabsorb enough through her altered GI tract. She was also sitting in the sunfor 30 minutes per day in Southern California, but she was a high-upexecutive and could not get outside much more. I have since changedpositions and have not been able to follow up with her. She was attemptingto get the surgery somehow reversed or at least improved because vitamin Dwas just the start of her many malnutrition issues. As far as

theinjectable dose goes - I don't remember what it was off the top of my headand it was prescribed by endocrine. She injected smaller doses daily if Irecall. I believe her levels rose to about 30 but still not great.-- * Berry MS, RD, CSP*

Me, too. The published guidelines are contradictory. Some recommend adding a prenatal to the regimen that the pt is already following for RNY, while other articles say that this combination may result in excessive vitamin A intake.
