Guest guest Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I will let you know but perhaps not soon enough. I am on chemotherapy; took some essiac tea capsules and Pau D arco capsules; could not stand the tea. I plan on doing a detox soon and then will move to parasitic cleanse, but will not have another PET scan until sometime in March or April. It seems like I am just whizzing by with the chemo with no side effects at all. Good Luck and God Bless...Sharon -- [ ] chemotherapy in 82 year old woman My 82 year old mother is currently in the hospital. She has had cancer before about 30 years ago, first cervical cancer, then bladder cancer, and then a benign tumor removed from her leg about 10 years ago. She has been ill for about 7 months and the doctors are just now suspecting cancer of the lymphnodes. Diagnoses is not definite yet. But they say the treatment is chemotherapy. I am very much concerned that she would not survive chemotherapy. She is in a weakened condition, can not keep food down and has lost a considerable amount of weight. She now weighs at about 113 pounds. She has never been open to alternative therapy, but has stated now that she will do " anything " to beat this. I am not in favor of chemotherapy, but that is what she is willing to do. Perhaps I might be able to help her with alternative treatment to detoxify the body from the chemo. Has anyone ever used an alternative method to detoxify the body in addition to taking the chemo? If so, what did you do and what were the effects? I have thought about Essiac tea and Hulda 's protocol of ridding parasites and pollutants. I am not definite yet on the best path to take in doing this. Any suggestions will be appreciated. She is still near and dear to us and although she has lived a long life, she could live yet more years. Thank you. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Thank you for your answer. Did you make the Essiac tea capsules yourself? Or where did you buy them? Do you think the capsules are as effective as the tea? She might be more willing to take capsules than tea. She is a 2 year old when it comes to taking medicine. Won't take anything that doesn't taste good to her. > I will let you know but perhaps not soon enough. Guest guest Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I'm a cancer patient and also a retired nurse. It is very important to let the doctor know if and what alternatives your mother might try. Chemo is designed to kill off the cancer cells and something as simple as some vitamins can actually protect the cancer cells from the chemo drugs. You either need to be very versed on the options you are going to try or find someone who is. There is no point in going through the misery of chemo if something else you are doing is going to block it's effects. Good luck to you and your mom. Guest guest Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I am battling breast cancer and underwent neo-adjuvent chemotherapy. I had a tumor that was over 5 centimeters. I was suppose to get 6 chemo treatments before having breast surgery. I underwent 4 treatments, also took a supplement called Haelan which is a fermanted soy beverage which the doctors didn't know I was taking and there is no tumor left. It totally disappeared. I really believe the Haelan did it. There has been a study done on it working well with chemo and radiation. It also helps to boost your immune system. Noone can believe I've had chemotherapy. I look great! The product is expensive, but I figure what price can you put on life. You can research the product at haelan951.com. Also, there have been articles written in the Journel of Well Being on it too at sagepartners.com. I can give you the phone number of the woman (Patty Saccoman) in one of the articles who cured herself of breast cancer without chemo, surgery or radiation. She totally believes it was the Haelan that did it. You can also order the Haelan through her. Her husband is a retired doctor and he started selling it in his practice. I need to warn you, the taste is terrible. It will definitely help your mother. There are no doubts about it, if she can choke it down. I could give her some tips on how to get it down if she decides to take it. If you want to speak directly to someone at Haelan, the phone number is 800-542-3526. You really need to check into this. This is what you're looking for. Good Luck! P.S. Let me know if I can help you further. [ ] chemotherapy in 82 year old woman My 82 year old mother is currently in the hospital. Guest guest Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Hi, I am interested in your information on Haelan 951 but admit to being fearful about taking it at the same time. I know most DR won't like this alternative treatment (at least not for me), as they seem to not recommend soy products of any kind once you have had Breast Cancer. My cancer is/was E-, P- and Her2- and all the DR I have spoken with tell me: Soy products are not a good idea for Breast Cancer Patients. I get the impression that we need to be careful with our delicate hormone balance. The DRs apparently are concerned that by adding any type of hormones to your system you would be taking a risk with encouraging cancer growth. When it comes to soy products ... I was told that They didn't want me going out of my way to add it to my diet. They also said there was no need to go out of my way to avoid it either. Just don't add soy on purpose. They told me that there is so much hidden soy in products now that we get plenty of soy in our everyday life without even knowing it and we would be surprised at how much we already get. They suggested I start reading labels to see for myself. That deliberately adding even more to our systems would not be advisable. They also didn't want me adding any types of Progesterone to my system either. They were not picking on soy and this information was included in with other suggestions. Such as the fact that cancer patients have a compromised IMMUNE SYSTEM even when not in treatment. I was told to watch cleaning products, always wear gloves when cleaning and some other helpful " DOs & DON'Ts " tidbits. Back to the subject at hand, would there be many testimonials on this or any DR studies showing effectiveness or safety issues? Thanks, Sue .. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I do them both in capsules. I won't know how they work until I get another bone scan or PET scan. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I bought the capsules from our local general nutrition store. I know the herbalist and mentioned that I made essiac tea and could not stand the taste and she showed me a bottle of E-tea, same thing, she said but may be more potent. I am sure if you do a search on the web for essiac tea, the capsule form should come up. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Thank you for the information. I will certainly use this in presenting alternatives to my mother. She had been vomiting and couldn't keep anything down before I took her to the hospital. She has been on an IV and has eaten some bland hospital foods. I tried the sagepartners.com url and couldn't get anything to come up. But I did get the website for the haelan. I would like to get the phone numbers you offered. This will help when I talk to my mother and maybe if she talks to someone who has used it, it would help her to try it. You can email me off list. She has an operation this evening to take abdominal fluids. I don't even know if I will be able to make it to the hospital. It is about a 45 minute drive and we are having the snowstorm of the year today, but I am going to try to get there. > I am battling breast cancer and underwent neo-adjuvent chemotherapy. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I agree with you about soy to a certain extent. I have read a lot of bad things about it and you can't get me to eat it knowingly either. But the one thing that I noticed about this soy product is that it is a fermented product. From what I understand that makes all the difference in how it is assimilated in the body. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I understand exactly what you are saying. My doctors have said the same thing. You really need to research Haelan951. After I did the research I found out that it actually locks into your binder receptors at a much lower estrogen level than your natural estrogen. It actually lowers your estrogen! Also, the doctors are quick to put you on Tamoxifen. That can cause uterine cancer. Why would you want to trade one risk for another. There is a lot of information on Haelan helping breast cancer patients. Call the company and they will send you the information. The doctors don't know about Haelan because they operate in a box. All they know is what they've learned in school and what pharmaceutical companies are pumping into them. Not even my alternative doctors had heard of Haelan. I also had estrogen receptor positive breast cancer. I wouldn't be recommending or taking something that I wasn't 100% positive about. My doctors can't believe my case. And the fact that I'm not doing the required surgery is unprecedented. I'm still looking for woman who have fought this without surgery. One I know of is Patty Saccoman who takes Haelan. The other is Lorraine Day. I know it can be done. We can't let the doctors scare us into doing things their way. Let me know what you decide. Good Luck! Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Soy, generally speaking, is bad stuff and should be avoided. The bad stuff it contains cannot be removed by cooking, only by fermentation. Now that is not to say that everything in soy is bad. Along with some things that can actually increase one's chances of getting cancer are other things that can help in fighting cancer. In that respect it is a two-edged sword. The only way through the morass is to educate oneself. Of course that can be said about most anything. Remember, " A little learning is a dangerous thing. Drink deep or taste not of the Pierion Spring. There, shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, while drinking largely sobers us again. " >I agree with you about soy to a certain extent. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Thank you for saying that!! -- Re: [ ] chemotherapy in 82 year old woman Re: [ ] chemotherapy in 82 year old woman >> " It is very important to let the doctor know if and what alternatives your mother might try " . The sad point is that this would be counterproductive. Most alopathic MD's, Radiotherapists and Chemotherapists know less about the efficacy of using antioxidents, herbs and other supplements while on orthodox therapies than donkies know about fruit salads. As a result, they use a " blanket " type policy and advice against and most often prohibit their patients from using any during ortodox treatments. That is not just wrong it is CRIMINAL!! While it is true that certain (very few) antioxidents and other substances such as curcumin, hypericum, glutathion, Artemisinin (during radiotherapy only) and perhaps high dose vitamin C might interfere with only certain types of chemo drugs or radiotherapy, studies show that 90% of all herbs, and antioxidents not only don't interfere, but help protect healthy cells while the cancer cells are under the attack of the toxic treatment. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I agree. Maybe I'm spoiled since my oncologist is very knowledgeable about alternative medicine and even promotes some of it to his patients. Most cancer hospitals have nutritionists who can sometimes help, providing they are up on herbs, supplements, etc. If that is a dead end then most communities have some holistic practitioners who might be able to help. The best approach is always to educate yourself, but there is so much to understand and consider it can be over whelming when you get down to the wire of having to go in for chemo. I do think more and more doctors are becoming better informed about alternatives. They have to when so many of their patients are experimenting with them. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Hi , I have to agree with you. I am from Cleveland, Ohio and we have some of the finest hospitals here, such as the Cleveland Clinic, University (Ireland Cancer Center - a NCI hospital) and Metro. We have probably 20 smaller hospital throughout the city and neighboring communities and used to have More big hospitals, but some are closing and many are consolidating. We lost 2 Major hospitals this year. I have been to all of the large ones and perhaps 5 of the smaller ones throughout my lifetime and treatment time frames. The point being I have spoken with many different practicioners from different places and NOT ONCE did anyone ever object to my using alternstive treatments along with my traditional ones. Infact it has been the opposite. Maybe it is because I am in an area with up to date ideas and treatments that I don't have a problem. An example would be: When I had my overies removed after my first bout with Breast Cancer I wanted HRT (OK, I didn't know any better at the time) and my GYN told me to take vitamin E 2x a day instead. I could recite numerous other examples like this. I have heard other things like this from friends and relatives. I don't believe that the medical profession is against alternative treatments, I think they are not up on everything (who could be?) and are worried that we won't do our homework and just take anything willy-nilly, thus doing ourselves more harm than good. Not to mention I think it might be illegal for them to practice outside of their field. I have even had a few DR TELL ME THEY DON'T OBJECT, BUT THAT THEY ARE ALSO NOT EDUCATED IN THIS FIELD SO CAN'T OFFER ANY ADVICE OR JUST DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT TO COMMENT. I see nothing wrong with that type of honesty. I have also had DR tell me, that whatever I am doing -- keep doing it because it is working. So that seems to be a seal of approval to me. I have to agree with some previous posters too. It is true that our DR don't know everything about this topic, but isn't that the same within the medical world too? We all have to go to a specialist for everything. Our Drs. won't step out of their field the tiniest bit. They will send us on to the GYN, Gastro, onc, ect... Why would you expect the alternative field to be any different? My DR will ask me if I do alternative and what I take. When I tell them I just take regular vitamin, minerals or food type herbs. They aren't concerned in the least. They said as long as I am not taking huge-mega doses, that it is fine. Now a few have tossed in, " be careful what I take -- learn about it or go to someone who has knowledge about them, because if I am not careful I could really hurt myself. " Now that statement is very true. I have even been told the same thing at a few health food stores. Like never mix an upper and a downer herb -- that I could kill myself if I took enough. So I think my Drs. were just looking out for my best interests when they said that. They don't even want a list of what I take, because they feel I am being cautious about what I am taking. The only thing I have been told is what might conflict with what medicines I am taking. I am always glad for that information. Now unbelievably at my Regular DR Office, he has am assistant who actually is well versed in the alternative field. He himself is very big into all of it. He and his family are vegetarians and big into juicing. He helped me with quite a few helpful hints. But at the same time, he doesn't know about every alternative option out there and to be honest neither do I. And I try to keep up. What he did do was give me his personal card and told me to feel free to call him about any new or different things I may have interest in. If he knows about it he will tell me his opinion and/or advice. If he doesn't know about it he will try to find someone who does. He said if I have interest in it, it means probably some other patients might also so he should be up on it incase he needs to know. I think that is about as helpful as he could get. I feel the medical field is coming along, it is just coming slowly. Remember everything has to be proven before these guys will OK it. I try understand why they feel this way, after all they are responsible for hundreds of peoples lives and I am sure they take that quite seriously. I just try to be open minded and look at things from the other point of view. But I have heard some horror type stories about some DR just completely objecting to it, too. I guess if I were one of their patients I would ask them why they felt the way they did. If I didn't agree with their answer, they wouldn't be the best DR for me. I would just look around for a new DR more open minded. I would drive pretty far to get a DR I liked. I am just glad I haven't been put in that position. Well, this is just my experiece and thoughts on this. Sue, In Ohio .. Quote
Guest guest Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 For all of those who answered my inquiry about chemotherapy for my mother, I thank you for all of your suggestions and thoughts. Unfortunately my mother died last night. I will be signing off of this list. And again thank you for your support. Quote
