Hello,

I am currently suffering froma form of hypogonadism most likely

resulting from finasteride use. I am about to visit a urologist to

have these set of tests performed:

Complete blood count and chemistry profile to include liver-kidney

function, glucose, minerals, lipids, and thyroid (TSH)

Free and Total Testosterone

Estradiol (estrogen)

DHT (dihydrotestosterone)

DHEA

PSA

Homocysteine

Luteinizing hormone (LH) (optional)

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) (optional)

I have been taking Wellbutrin for about two weeks, but I have

decided to come off the drug because of some rather unpleasant side

effects. My question is whether or not the Wellbutrin might skew

the results of my tests. If so, how long should it take for the

Wellbutrin to clear my system?

Thank your for your help,

Hi SoakingBook,

1. As far as I know Wellbutrin has no effect on the blood tests you mention.

You can always call the lab to double check this.

2. A lot of people (like me) have had very uncomfortable startup side effects

with Wellbutrin. These often go away after a few weeks. When Wellbutrin

works it works well, and has the least sexual side effects of most

antidepressants. One way to avoid startup side effects is to start with a low

dose and work up to the prescribed dose over a few weeks. My guess is your

doc didn't suggest that. My suggestion is to reduce the dose some, see how

that goes, and increase it back up. Check with your doc about first.

3. Test list: remove the " optional " from LH & SHBG. Add FSH

(follicle-stimulating hormone) and Prolactin. The lab might do better testing

DHEA-S than DHEA.

4. You're doing the right thing getting this test panel at the start of

treatment.

The uro should be willing to order them. If not, you'd do well to find another

doc.

Hi there

Wellbutrin acts on the dopamine system in the brain. If anything, it

may boost T slightly (unproven but theorized) but that's it. There

are some reports that say Wellbutrin can actually increase sex

drive, but none of the folks here (including myself) have had this

pleasant side effect.

It's too bad you have to get off WB. I've been on it for 3 weeks,

and have increased energy and focus. I am only on the 150mg XL

dose.

You should have Prolactin checked. Too much of it can be a sign of

a pituitary tumor and can cause libido to go down the tubes. If this

is the case, there are ways to treat it.

You're on the right track - best of luck

I started with the 150 dose for a week and then increased to the

300. I experienced a rapid weight loss, the inability to sleep, and

a great deal of anxiety (although ED naturally tends to cause

anxiety). I also suffered from a constant urinary drip. The misery

forced me to discontinue the medication, but I may try again with

the lower dosage.

Thank your for your advice. I will make sure to request the

additional tests. My hope is that testing will be the first step

toward a full recovery.
