I completely agree. When I experienced my chest pain - I did have it

evaluated to make sure it was not cardiac in nature. It was a relief to

know it was not!

To , Kathy, Elaine, Judy, Anne, Dana, Lori, and everyone on the

Parenting list who has written about school and your children:

I want to thank all of you for your help and suggestions for my talk

to the Special Education class this past Monday. I went there with a couple

of pages of brief notes and several pages of excerpts from letters to both me

and the list concerning our OCD kids and their experiences with school.

There were about 38 students in the class including one student in a

wheel chair and at least one non-traditional student. I surprised myself by

talking for at least 30 minutes about , OCD, and what his experiences

were like in public school. The class seemed very attentive (it was my first

experience talking to a college class). The class was 75 minutes long and the

rest of the time was taken up with questions from the students.

I would say that the students seemed genuinely interested in our story.

It seemed as though perhaps they were hearing things they had never

considered before and were taking them to heart. I left them with three

points I wanted them to remember:

1. Know the law! I told them that special accommodations, IEP’s, and

504’s are the law. They should know this and be willing to cooperate in

fulfilling the law.

2. I asked them to believe that as parents we DO know our children

better than anyone and they should trust our perceptions of our kids.

3. I also asked them to please be like the teacher described in the

letter which said they had the most wonderful teacher who approached the

whole situation as a “learning experience”. I asked them to approach working

with ANY handicapped student as an opportunity to learn and grow in their

profession.

I guess I didn’t do too badly as the professor asked me if I would be

willing to come and talk to some of her summer school classes. That would

include a 600 class which I assume means people already teaching in the

field.

Hopefully thanks to all of us, there are a few more people who realize

what a struggle daily life is for those of us with a handicapped child - no

matter what the handicap.

Great report on your presentation! It feels wonderful to be appreciated,

eh?! I am going to print it out and adapt it to be included in the kids

files, or to give to new teachers. Its already in my resource file!

I am working on Ziv's move to intermediate school, Adi to Secondary School

and Tom has that wonderful alternate high school program. I have to be well

prepared and to expect anything!! It would be a lot easier if we didnt have

to fight each year for the services our kids need.

had come the furthest in our school district being fully included until

grade 6th. It started getting very hard as he got older, mainly because of

the teachers not being as accepting. Changed schools (big mistake) and let

them talk me into putting him into special day class for only two periods a

day for the academics. (bigger mistake) We all know how are kids do with

change and then put him into a class with an unstable teacher and I'm still

in battle legally.

He's now in a special day class at the Junior high school where I insisted he

be, where all the kids he knew would eventually be, and could see him at

lunch and PE at least. He's doing much better thanks to a supportive staff

and now goes to a different school two times a week on community outing which

he loves in a class that is much more at his level then the other special day

class and he has more friends that will interact with him.

I guess it's finding where the child feels the most comfortable too. He now

has other kids asking him for his phone number and calling him. even though

he has unintelligable speech to most who don't know him, and can't really

carry on a conversation. He is doing regular PE, band (plays the drums) and

does jobs around the school like picking up the attendance from all the

regualr classes, etc.

We have two dogs, an old Beagle who has tortured for the last10 years

and took all the wrestling abuse and being layed on and ears pulled and hit

toys, and this dog just dodged the ruff stuff and loved the rest of the

time, coming to him tail wagging and happy for the company. Now he's a

little old and crotchity and hides when he sees coming. He's still

really good with him and the one time escaped from our locked back yard

when the gardeners left the gate unlatched, the dog left with him, unleashed

and stayed with him on his 7 block venture, crossing 2 major streets. On any

other occassion, this dog would take off if the gate was open and turn a deaf

ear to me yelling to come back. He stayed close by 's side the whole

time. The police and I finally found him on the way back home.

Our newest dog who is a big black lab mix is very wild and jumps up on

everyone. He just loves and is definately a great playmate. They play

tug of war and the dog actually pulls across the yard and he weighs 108

lbs. Never has nipped him or knocked him down and is truly his best friends.

Our dogs stay outside in our fenced back yard and have the run of the yard.

The have 2 dog houses and do just fine outside. sneaks them in the

house occassionally when I'm busy out side and then locks me out, the little

stinker. I've learned to have a spare key out there.

Good luck with the puppy. They're alot of work, but well worth the effort,

seieing what they do for the kids.

Hi Moonbeam,

I do agree that beta-glucan can be taken orally together with vit C. My

real question was whether more beta-glucan would be absorbed into the blood

stream taken IV rather than taking it orally.

Hi Ketan,

The only specific benifit that has been demonstrated by IV

(instead of oral) beta glucan, is when it is injected by a doctor into a tumor.

100%

of tumors shrunk, usually within 5 days. Otherwise it is absorbed very well when

taken on an empty stomach.

I do not think that more beta glucan would be absorbed by giving it through

IV.

It does seem to make sense that if for some reason your guts were

compromised that digestion might be less than ideal. In these cases it

would seem that IV delivery could be useful

What you say is comon sense, yet not really true. My friend

has

had a wheat intolerance for a decade yet after taking oral beta glucan for some

months his wheta intoleance disappeared. I suggest glucan can fix a damaged gut.

hi janet,,,

wow, please dont misunderstand me.....i have to drive.....i live out in the

mountains of pa....so it would be a very difficult decision for me to give

up driving.....

should i give up driving,,,my house is gone,,,my boat is gone,,,and my car

is gone........that would be tuf.........

i just started living my dream in feb of 2000 and in march of 2001 it was

pretty much destroyed...the boat isnt even going into the water this year

cause im told i need a new hip....the pain wont let me walk up the boat

ramp......

i say id give up driving but the reality is they would have to put me in

jail to make me give it up....

i would have no choice...neither of my cats are willing to learn.......

Chet - Did I understand right, that your EP said implanting the ICD is

generally done under a local anesthetic? I've had two and been knocked out

both times; I've never heard of anyone getting just a local. About passing

out - I always pass out right before getting zapped. And (sorry Bob) I

still drive, although I won't go on the freeway or anywhere the speed limit

is over 40. In my state (Washington), you can't drive for six months after

loss of consciousness. After nine months I started driving. I've now been

zapped only once in almost 34 months, so I don't worry about it much any

more. janet

Bob... so sorry to hear you're facing more surgery... and shame

you've resolved to no boating this year... our boat will be back in

the water in about 5 wks... 'can't wait... hope you get thru hip

replacement w/out problems and that all will be fine for next boating

season ... remember, that invite to join us onboard our boat is still

good should you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods... (OC, NJ

back bay) ... this year should be a hoot... we just adopted a

greyhound 3 1/2 weeks ago and plan on taking her on boat... if you

know anything 'bout g'hounds, when you rescue them they don't know

much 'cept to run, eat & sleep ... we had to teach her to go up &

down stairs, not to run thru 'glass doors among other things ... in

April we're gonna attempt to teach her boating skills ... if she can

learn that I'm wondering why your cats aren't willing to learn how to

drive... can't understand it <grin> ... I sincerely hope your

dream was not destroyed in March of '01 (assuming that's when you

were dx w/heart problems) ... dreams shouldn't get destroyed so

easily... we just have to make some adjustments ... remember, life's

a Beach ... but we can still persue our dreams!!! .. keep us posted

w/regards to your hip surgery... I'll keep you in my prayers.

Bob... (responded once, but don't see it on board so here goes again)

I'm really sorry to hear that you won't be putting your boat in water

this year... I know how much you enjoy boating ... remember, that

invite to join us onboard ours still goes should you ever find

yourself in our part of the world, (back bays of OC, NJ) ... we'll be

putting it over in about 5 wks if all goes as planned ... this season

should be a hoot... we just adopted a greyhound 3 1/2 wks ago and

we're gonna' be taking her boating w/us if it works out ... don't

know if you're familiar w/greyhounds, but when you rescue them all

they know is to run, eat & sleep... we had to teach her to go up &

down stairs & not to run thru 'glass doors among other things and now

we're gonna' teach her boating skills, we hope ... if she can learn

all of this I don't understand why your cats aren't willing to learn

how to drive <grin> ... I sincerely hope you didn't have your dream

destroyed in March '01 (I'm assuming that's when you were dx w/all

this heart stuff) ... my husband's been living w/compensated CHF and

A-fib since Jan '00 after having a bout w/advanced lymphoma some 12

yrs ago and still goes to work 5 days a wk as a self-employed builder

(very lucky) so he can earn enough money to live his dream... big

cars and fast boats ... remember, life's a Beach! but we can't

allow our illnesses to " destroy " our dreams, otherwise, what's the

sense of even being treated? ... to keep the doctors in big cars and

fast boats? ... I think not! ... we need to learn how to

make " adjustments " is all, so we can get back to livng our

dreams ... I hope you get thru this hip surgery and are back on

your feet and your boat in good time... good luck to you and keep us

posted as to your progress... you'll be in my prayers.

Hello Janet;

Ihave my ICD for a year and 23 days and first three months i got zapped 59 times because they didn't know i was allergic to sodalol but out of all those times i have never passed out b4 getting zapped until now, i figured you should know. Got a question after you guys pass out do you feel getting zapped. I have felt it every time. I think i would rather pass out and not feel anything than having to be allert and feel every zapp. Good Luck Good Health and Good Heart. TURK

Know where you are coming from. Dave and I just put the big boat on the market. Gonna keep the 22 footer as we both enjoy fishing and should get some use out of it. Kinda hard to sel the old home, but we gotta do what we gotta do. has a hard time walking to shore, and with it being an old wooden boat ....

But I can not do the work that needs to be done on it and work ful time and run around for everything. So before it decides it is going to fall apart under us it is for sale. Gonna hate going to shore after all these years...but like your's, the cats do not want to be trained to do other than eat and sleep.

Dear Bob, I maybe a little behind here as I have been in and out of

circulation. I have been trying to keep n touch with Stacey and trying to

catch on the email. So what happened if I can be really nosy to make you lay

down. Are you giving up because of your hip. I don't think so. Listen

here, I never got to float down the river with you or make you listen to my

off key sing. You can't just throw me out like used dishwater. I want some

of that lemonade that you are so famous for. I will bring the lemon vodka to

give a little kick.

I hip replacement what are you talking about. I recently shared a room with

a woman at the Cleveland Clinic who was 83 had every disease know to man and

a icd too. She underwent a hip replacement with a local because of her

condition they couldn't put her completely out (not sure of all the used) but

she watched what they did the whole time and described to me if full gory

detail. She is going to be up and around within a few weeks and is planing

on going back to her gold game. Now is this old gal can hobble around and

deal with all this what do you think you can do. If you need some help out

there to get things going if you can put up with me and my two dogs I am on

my way. Of course I don't drive anymore but I keep pack mules handy for

quick trips and outlet shopping. I bring the chips and dips and steaks and

whatever you want but no more of this no boating anymore.

Bob I don't know the whole story but I refuse to let you give up your dreams

cause if you looses then we all loose a bit of our dreams too.

You know my story so I won't bore you with that again. I have been down and

counted out so many times it is not funny. Abused childhood, physically

mental and sexually bad marriage, gay son, 4 icds. Way to many shocks. Lots

of fear and Lots of panic but you guys got me to hang on.

Bob you can do it. I have had two knee replacements and working on a third a

third replacement not a third knee. I have an elbow that I can't bend

straight from all the scare tissue. I have lupus and that other silly fibro

thing. I live in the burbs and I am not allowed to drive as I have no

warning before passing out and have never been zap free for 6 months.

I have a single lady friend that has been crippled up pretty bad from polio

and they found out her spine had worrn to to a pencil led thickness whhipped

her butt into the hospital did surgery December5, she has been in rehab ever

since but able to do more now than she ever was. Let me just tell you Essie

is a big lady very overweight with two bad hips and a bad foot and leg. She

has had her trouble to lost her husband when the kids were young to cancer

and raised them on her own. She likes to complain a great deal until this

happened this scaared the be jesus right out of her we all thought she

wouldn't make it well she doing just great. So have some faith in yourself.

Come on Bob get on we promise to carry you till you can get up and going

again.
