April, I have to disagree here...... it definitely sounds like liver .....

she needs to get her son to ER.... dehydration does not cause dark urine

or jaundiced skin in matter of days or weeks unless absolutely no water

and person already ill.... this could be a liver disease other than hep or

an extreme case of liver failure....... I think it is very serious and

needs to be hospitalized and evaluated ASAP.. sorry, sally

Lori, Jaundice is not something to write off..... he could be using....

methadone does dehydrate.. but if his eyes are yellow and his skin is kind

of smelly and his urine is dark.... his liver if failing...... no matter

what the cause.... Jaundice is not something to foo foo....... I have only

read a bit... but from what i have... he is taking methadone from either

heroin or oxy addiction probably, and I know I had a friend that continued

drinking and taking the oxy with the methadone and her liver started to go

quickly..... Please don't listen to us..... NONE OF US... take him to

hospital where there is LIVER DOC>>>>> we don't know anything when it

comes to the symptoms coming on so fast as you are speaking of........ if

you have seen someone who says oh well.... then go for second

opinion....... I know when I was a kid and had hep from heroin use, I was

yellow and almost died if I had not gotten to hospital.... Thank G-d my

father knew the signs....... I don't want to scare you, but your son needs

to be honest with you as to what he is doing and he needs to go to

hospital... I will read more of what you wrote later, sally..........

sorry to sound so scarey, I remember when my dad saw me and said my GAWD

you are jaundiced.... and I almost went into liver failure...... this was

when I was just stopped doing drugs and had just taken some again..... I

am allergic to methadone so only took it once... please don't listen to

any of us.... go to a good doc I don't know where you live.. but find a

good teaching hosp connected to UNIV if possible where they have a liver

dept and get him there......... look at the palms of his hands.... if they

are dark pink or red..... this is not something to sluff off...

Please...... love and prayers, sally

I agree... take him to the hospital. I took methadone while positive for HCV

(didn't know I had it then) and I did not have the symptoms your son has. If he

has no insurance, and is that sick, I believe they HAVE to treat him... or there

must be some program to help you financially? I;m sure the hospital could advise

you...

I agree... take him to the hospital. I took methadone while positive for HCV

(didn't know I had it then) and I did not have the symptoms your son has. If he

has no insurance, and is that sick, I believe they HAVE to treat him... or there

must be some program to help you financially? I;m sure the hospital could advise

you...

If he isn't housed in the clinic, I would just talk to him about the

symptoms he's having.

You mentioned that he had dark urine..

You could ask him about the color of his bowel movements, if they are pale

there is a chance that he simply has a bile obstruction...(gall stone)

This is very common with drug users and alcoholics.

And normally with this kind of jaundice there is some minor itching, so

you could ask him about that.

You can also assess whether or not he is extremely fatigued or is

having any heart palpitations or excessive sweating, that may indicate

that he has reduced oxygen.

The methadone at this point is hurting him more than anything else.

If the clinic and your son are willing to stop, I would do that.

There is also a slight chance that he has a secondary infection like

mono, and some strains of Strep can cause rapid red cell destruction.

All jaundice comes with some level of fever, but when its excessive, say

around 102 to 103 there could be a new infection.

Most of us with hep have a normal body temp that is a two or three degrees

cooler than normal..so a real temp in one of us could be 99 or 100..

I know you said that there is no insurance, but most hospitals have indigent

care policies where treatment cost is based on your income...so don't let

that deter you from seeking care for him should you decide to take him in.

Hi Vicki, I think you found the right place...alot of us here are here because a

family member has Hep C and we need the support and advice of others on what we

can do to help them. I never thought about treating my brother different

because he has Hep C...like your family feels now...they need to inform

themselves that this isn't caught because you give someone a hug, or

support....maybe through the help of this group you can give them the info they

need to not treat your son badly...this is there relative for goodness

sakes...if I could I would give my brother half my liver to keep him going.....

The healthcare system has basically told my brother he should be home laying

in bed with hospice there....and can't figure out why he isn't....he is doing

some herbal teas...watching his diet and eating small meals several times per

day....and he carries a saint Micheal pin in his wallet and a father Staneslos

Casey (from Detroit probably spelled wrong) relic in his wallet too...he is not

of the Catholic faith but was given these by our relatives that are....He is

giving his health up to God and doing the best he can do with the herbs.......he

is on many prayer lists...He developed Liver Cancer after years of having Hep

C.....his cancer is not growing and the Dr.'s tell him keep doing what he is

doing....I should say he only found out that he has cancer in September of 2006.

Blessings to you and Your Son,

Darcy

Hello Vicki

You have come to the right place. It does come as a bit of a shock when first

diagnosed and takes a little time to sink in. Many of us, like myself, do not

discover that we have hep c until we have already lived with the condition for

20 or 30 years. I am telling you this to re-assure you that it does not have to

necessarily mean the end of the world. I am in my 50's and have lived a normal

and healthy life and was shocked by the discovery of having hep c. I am

currently undergoing treatment but live and work as before. I have also chosen

to only share my condition with close family who are supportive and understand.

i want to thank you so much for the support you have sent this way.i have found

so much hope with this group already that i really did not think was there. i am

sending this hope on to my son along with a prayer, as this is the only support

that i can get to him. i am 6-8 hours away & financially strapped. it is eally

hard for me to not be able to be there with him. he thinks he has had it for

atleast 7 years. have you tried the mesosilver that i am reading so much about?

i am sending the info that i can find on it too. thanks again. bless you n hope

i want to thank you so much for the support you have sent this way.i have found

so much hope with this group already that i really did not think was there. i am

sending this hope on to my son along with a prayer, as this is the only support

that i can get to him. i am 6-8 hours away & financially strapped. it is eally

hard for me to not be able to be there with him. he thinks he has had it for

atleast 7 years. have you tried the mesosilver that i am reading so much about?

i am sending the info that i can find on it too. thanks again. bless you n hope

you are doing ok

You have come to the right place. It does come as a bit of a shock when first

diagnosed and takes a little time to sink in. Many of us, like myself, do not

discover that we have hep c until we have already lived with the condition for

20 or 30 years. I am telling you this to re-assure you that it does not have to

necessarily mean the end of the world. I am in my 50's and have lived a normal

and healthy life and was shocked by the discovery of having hep c. I am

currently undergoing treatment but live and work as before. I have also chosen

to only share my condition with close family who are supportive and understand.

hello, i don't know where to start. i am new to this group. i don't

even know if this is where i need to be. i have just learned in the

last two days that my son has been diagnosed with hep c. he is in

prison for four years. the prison dr's have known since he was sent

there. they made excuses as to why he was not informed before now.

they had a health fair a month ago, the nurse asked him what kind of

treatment thay had him an for it. he was in total shock as he had no

idea. they are supposed to be setting up a biopsey to see how bad his

liver is. i am scared to death for him n myself. i have informed my

family of his condition as he will get out in about a year. they are

all acting like he has the plague. i feel like i am alone in the

journey. as i am sure so does my son, as i can not be there for him.

please let me know if there is a different support group that i should

join as it is not i tdhat has hep c
