Hi! My son is now 14 and is 5’10 and

weighs 175. To look at him he is not overweight BUT….he was when he was

younger and I did the same thing as you are doing…except my son shot up

in height so he evened out well. He is going to be tall and broad shoulders

like my husband. My son is in a size 12 MENS size!! Same as myhusband!

My only concern would be not to make it a big deal to hurt his feelings but

rather you need a partner for your health changes and would love for him to do

it with you…kids are so sensitive. And others can be so mean to them. Its for his own good for health reasons too ya know? My son has always been a bigger kid..other kids are up to his

shoulder if that , that are in his class!!!

I think what you are doing for your son is great.

My "words of wisdom" would be that if you can find someone else to help reinforce those ideas it might help. I know that when my boys were 12 years old -- nothing that mom said was right. How long has it been since he has been to see a doctor? What does the physician have to say? Do you have a local YMCA available? We had a personal trainer meet with our sons & set up a work out program for them. Having a guy tell them was a lot better than mom telling them. Is there a phy ed teacher at school who might be able to help him? How about a school nurse?

PS: My "overweight" son is now 16 years old, 6 feet tall and weighs 150 pounds -- all muscle! Has become a pretty good athelete. He just needed some time to grow & develop.

Got any junque food in the house! Sometimes all we have to do is buy

less of that and more healthy! do it gradual!!!! LOL kida and husbands

are smart (sometimes) I know i will get hollared at for that statement

by someone!!!

I have a now 16 yr old nephew who was overweight since he was like 5. He was always on the shorter side and at times you would think he was to overweight. The dr told him to start doing something about it. His dr suggested WW. So he went and did awesome with it. Then he gained a bit back BUT when he lost the weight the first time it gave him the confidence to join football in high school. Mind you he never played. Since then he has really slimmed down. He is still on the heavy side BUT it suits his body now. Matt was like 150 lbs at 11. Matt biggest problem was his portions and exercise. That is why WW worked for him.

for the seizures?Because, that is quite crazy, in my opinion, if this is the

case. In many cases antiepileptic medication will cause a seizure disorder to

worsen, as it did in my daughters case. Please check into this! I hope for the

best for your son.

Well this is my first time in a chat room, but I'm really looking for

some help. On Tuesday of this week, my son had his first seizure. He

is two and has been healthly and happy. He is currently at Childrens

Hospital and is getting treatment. The doctors are having a hard time

stopping the seizures. He currently has about 5-6 a day. He is now

on three medications.

I guess I'm just really frustrated and am looking for some support.

It is killing me and my wife to watch our son go thru this. I guess

we just want to vent and talk with others whom are going thru the same

thing.

My son is now 5yrs old and has been having seizures since he was 2months of age

we are currently from Hawaii but has been transferred here to UCLA hospital and

is now on the ketogenic diet before he was on the diet he has been on so many

medications and has been on 4-5 meds a day now he is down to 2 meds and he is

actually doing better now then how he was before seizures everyday anywhere from

5 to 50+ a day lasting from 5minutes to 1hr or not even stopping until taken to

hospital when we arrived here before he was on the diet my son would end up in

the PICU here at s childrens hospital I know what you and your family are

going through hang in there and we can all work it out together.And trust me

there are alot of helping hands and supporters you can imagine cause I was very

blessed to have such good people here to talk to and listen to what they have

gone through.

Thanks for the email . Things have gotten a

little better for our son. He is home now, and has

not had another seizure for 2 1/2 weeks.

They placed him on the 3 meds because he was having

some many seizures. i guess they just wanted them to

stop. He is off the clonapin, and is now on depakote

and keppra. They are going to try and ween him off

the depakote slowly and stay on the keppra.

This is all so crazy. How in the hell do people

handle this?

Hey thanks for the response. Our guy is doing

better. He is down to two meds and has not had

another seizure for almost a month. We are keeping

our fingers crossed. We are also seing another

neurologist whom is helping with a treatment plan.

I'm glad to hear your son is doing better. This has

been a tough go, but we also have tons of support and

great friends and family. Everyone has been awesome.

Keep in touch, and I hope things only continue to get

bettter for you and your family.

The tremors could be anxiety or a medication side effect. My son is

not a teenager, but he does tremble. His trembling is during times

of severe anxiety and they even include his jaw. He looks as if he

is shivering with cold. Some meds can cause tremors as a side effect

(would be noticeable in his hands)- you might want to check that out

with his doctor.

Hi Marilyn, it's good to hear from you! Sorry things seem to have

been increasing recently with your son! How long has he been on

these medications?? I do know some can cause tremors/shaking. Could

even cause someone to be more emotional.

With the girlfriend, I'm sure if he's not " sure " as to how

stable/secure their relationship is (will it last, etc.) that it is

adding to some stress for him. Is this his first girlfriend? And

between a girlfriend, dealing with OCD, being in therapy, meds, etc.,

AND being a teenager - I'm sure it is hard to determine where any

mood/mouthiness comes from. I know my 3 sons - okay, 2 of the 3! and

ages 20 and 16 - can drive me up the wall with their

tones/attitudes/mouth.... Boy, I could tell stories! And these

are my 2 *normal* sons, not my OCD teen.

I wish I had words of wisdom for you & son! Do you feel the CBT doc

is experienced with OCD? If his OCD has just increased recently

(last 2 months) and the shaking just began - how do YOU feel

girlfriend is handling it? If he's worried about her, then maybe if

she could reassure him that they are " fine " and he should just

concentrate on his therapy and not worry about " them " , it might

help. I know my oldest was terrible to be around during any times he

& girlfriend were having " words " or thought the other was losing

interest or anything, all that stuff teens worry about.

We discontinued anafranil (chlomipramine) because, among other things,

it caused really awful (in our minds) hand tremors in our daughter. It

was really disturbing to see my 8 year old's hands shaking so badly

that she looked like a Parkinson's disease sufferer. I don't know if

this is the sort of trembling you are describing, but I do know it is

common with the older SRIs, of which I think anafranil/chlomipramine is

the only one currently used to treat OCD.

I was on a different SRI as a child, imipramine, and it caused the same

issue for me. My daughter's doctor suggested that the trembling was

caused by too much seratonin. Has your son been on other medications?

Usually anafranil/chlomipramine is not a first choice, in my

understanding, because although it is quite effective it does have more

side effects than the newer SSRIs (zoloft, prozac, etc.)

Do you live in a trailer under power lines? Have you noticed that the

seizures only happen there and nowhere else? I think trailers may

be bad in general, especially if they are not properly grounded,

but also because the metal structure attracts electromagnetic

radiation from the surrounding environment. And of course the power

lines make it worse (especially if they are the big ones).

Some people find that moving helps. Others may find relief from an

EMF protection device. Also, if your son has a lot of metal in his

body (dental fillings, braces, etc.), there may be relief in getting

that removed, as they attract radiation.

They seem to think prisoners have no rights. I know we have a corrections officer in this group and I don't want to offend him. Thank you, Tim. We are waiting to get a

letter from him to find out what happened, but sometimes the mail is held at

the unit for a couple of weeks after he writes it before they put in the post.

Thank you, Janet. Just like in

any occupation there are good and bad. Texas has some pretty cruel stories and some

of the units are really hellholes. All I can do is keep him in the Light and

hope that he stays on his meds. One blessing is that he is a big

man, 6’7 and over 300 lbs. For the most part hs is left alone and

he stays active in Bible study groups and D & D so he has some good social

contact instead of the bad. What is so ugly is that our penal systems are

set up to punish people for being mentally ill. Since prisons have become

such an embedded part of the economy, I do not look for that to change. I

thank everyone for their prayers and support because my heart is so

very sad.
