Interestingly, when I had my first CI activiation last Dec 2002,

I only had one package of toshiba and rest of varta packs for a

worth for one year. My audie suggested me that I used varta

because I had my first ten channels, not the 20 channels for the

first hook-up. It was probably because I was very senstive to

the high pitch. I didn't remember why I only had 10 channels.

Now, I have 22 channels that turned on.

Do I need to call the Cochlear Company to get the toshiba batteries

ordered because I couldn't find anywhere in the product catalog via

internet. Any suggestions?

Dana,

You can order them thru Cochlear or your audiologist can. I normally just order

them myself. Most people do what is convenient. I would imagine that your

audiologist probably has a few packs, at least, that she can provide you with.

It sounds like you used the pack of Toshiba's that was included in your starter

kit. Everyone gets one package of six Toshibas and a full box (300) of Power

One's (Varta's) because most people use the Power One.

Aaaaaaaaaaah! I called the Cochlear Co. this morning and to order

the 3G jacket also Power One Plus battery for one pack since I am

going to test it to see how it goes with 1800. I learned that

toshiba is no longer to carry which they have new battery called

Power One Plus. I don't know why they don't carry toshiba any longer.

That's why toshiba isn't in the product catalog.

It's supposed to snow here on Sunday. I'm sure it will only be in the mountains

but that's a pretty sight. The high is supposed to be 34 and the low 22. Kinda

chilly especially if it's windy. It's gonna feel like Thanksgiving this year.

explained from your call this am. Too bad we don't live closer. I have some

I am sorry to hear a bout 4 electrodes that gave up. I know it

isn't easy, but you will get it better although.

Last weekend, I attended the Constructive Linngunsti workshop (

I can't spell the ling ( relating to the language). It talked about

English and ASL rules. It's very intersting and deep workshop. I

have enjoyed it very much.

I am in school right now. I gotta go to get my workbook done by Wednesday.

Hi Dana,

Video and marketing literature can claim anything they want! Having said

that, I can share that I do particularly well with music and I have a fabulous

perception of the whole spectrum of sound. I hear lyrics to most of the

songs I like and I couldn't be happier with my implant. Too bad we can't try

before we buy!

I do like the idea of the t-mic though. I like that there is something

that sits inside the ear to receive sound. However, I don't have any problems

with phones. My microphone is just atop my ear right in the front and there

are also microphone holes on both the outer side and the side up against my

head. I do very well hearing sound from all sides of me including (but always)

behind me. I hold my cell phone just about an inch higher than a hearing

person would with no problems. With the telecoil, I can hear on the phone in

the

loudest of situations because I can turn the background noise off totally!

I feel that I am getting some benefit with my CI because I no longer feel

comfortable being without it. Using just my hearing aid in my " good ear "

doesn't give me enough sound.

Yes, that is exactly what it does for me. I have @10% voice discrimination

with my hearing aid, (down about 3% from 2 years ago) and it is that 10%

that allows me to understand and discriminate words and sentences. It's still

not perfect, I can't " hear " the difference between the words " yes " and " no " .

The hearing aid and the CI together give me louder sound with some voice

discrimination.

You say:

If your CI team hasn't told you the following, they were remiss. There is

NO guarentee how much you will get from this surgery. You may get speech

discrimination from the day you have " turn-on " or it may come 6 months later.

louder and make lipreading a little bit easier. For some people, this is

more than enough. Please don't misunderstand me. With nothing to lose, in

that the ear I had implanted had no discrimination at all, I would do this

again

in a heartbeat. If my other ear becomes unable to distinquish at all, I

will ask for a second CI. But you must know going in that your results may not

be all that you hope for. My results are a great disappointment to me in

that I am not getting the distinction that so many others report. At the same

time, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have this technology, and

still feel I benefit to some degree. Also, if I hadn't gone through with

this, I would always wonder if it would have helped me and mourned the loss of

opportunity to try.

Dana, I do hope this doesn't discourage you in any way! I am an

advocate for the CI, especially for all those who have nothing to lose. But I

I appreciate the honesty in your post. Thanks also to Alice and

others who added their comments on this topic. I'm sure that this was

a monumental decision for everyone who decided to go ahead with an

implant, and I'm at a stage where part of me is ready to go, and part

of me is second guessing myself. I think you're very right, Jackie,

when you point out that if you didn't do this, you'd always wonder how

things would be if you had. As I make myself crazy deciding, then

undeciding, then deciding again, it does bring me some comfort and

clarity to know that I'm not making this decision on a whim.

My implant center is NYU. I do have a better ear, which is still

quite functional in a relative sense of the word. I am having my

worse ear implanted, and would not even consider doing it otherwise.

Part of the reason that I hesitated and took so much time deciding and

" shopping " for information is that I've been able to function quite

well despite my hearing loss, and wanted to make sure I was ready

before jumping into unfamiliar territory.

Hi, Dana,

Congratulations, it is all behind you now! And so much more is ahead of

you. The pain and pressure you are feeling, as well as the swelling, are

completely normal. You may notice some bruising in the days ahead as well.

Most

of it goes away within a week's time, so try not to worry. Please do stay

" on top " of the pain. And rest and relax! You just had surgery and are

entitled to get back into bed and stay there! LOL Actually, if you have a

reclining

chair, some find this more comfy, so try it. Good luck!

Dana, Sounds like we have some similar experiences with our bands. Let me share with you what I do for protein shakes. Yes, the calories are so important. Nina told me that I need around 800-1200 calories per day. Knowing this, I had to become creative. When I make protein shakes at home and/or at school for lunch, I had to become creative in order to increase calories PLUS add some nutritional value to what I was eating. If I use vanilla flavored protein powder, I add fruit. I might add frozen strawberries, blueberries, or peaches. I add 1 scoop of powder, about 6-8 pieces of fruit, 1 cup of milk, and chopped ice to my WONDERFUL Magic Bullet blender (yes, the one from the infomercial!!) and blend it until the ice is gone. It is absolutely delicious! These shakes have approximately 350 calories each. Now, my favorite, is to use chocolate protein powder, same amount of

milk, one banana, and about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. Blend until the ice is gone and it is out of this world!!! Now, this shake has about 450 calories because of the extra peanut butter. This is what I usually do for lunch. It is absolutely delicious! So, I am now working hard to get the calories in and add some things to my shakes (like fruit) to give them a little more value. No, I'm not getting any vegetables or meat in but I can't do anything about that right now. I've not gotten to the point where I am sick of shakes simply because I vary the flavors. We have 2 different smoothie stores close to our home so I go there too if I don't want one from home. The other night I had a vanilla yogurt, protein powder, and orange juice smoothie that was incredibly refressing. It is so hot here (94 degrees today) that the smoothies are very refreshing. I'm fine with the variety for now but I'm sure I will

yearn for real food at some point. I do try to eat some regular food but I've not been very successful as of yet. In fact, I just tried to eat a Ritz cracker and it got stuck. Earlier today I tried to eat some applesauce and I couldn't do it yet. I'm sure the day will come (I hope) that I will be able to eat normal foods again but, for now, I am completely satisfied. I've done really well with the weight loss but it isn't very consistent. I'm not one who gets bummed out when I don't see the scale move much. I weigh every day but I am completely satisfied with what I am doing. Now, if I don't see the scale move for several days, then, I try to think about what I am doing but most of the time I feel I am doing what I need to do and that it will come off eventually. I'll go from losing 15 pounds in one week to not losing anything for a couple of weeks so it all balances out. Like I said

in the other posting, this has been very easy for me so far. I'm almost at my half-way goal and I'm only 3 months out! Who could complain????? Hey Jenni, I have a magic bullet too! Haven't made a smoothie yet but they sound great! I bought mine to "puree" my cream soups after my last fill. I plan on using it alot this summer for "fun drinks" too. I just need to read the recipe book it came with to get some more ideas. Sounds like you have a good idea about getting in your calories with the fruit, milk,and protein powder. I never knew the calorie count that Nina told you. That helps alot. My sister called this afternoon and just came out and asked me if I would like "The Bullet" for my birthday....and that will be just a couple of weeks and one week before my first fill......It won't be a surprise, but I am thrilled...and now I am even more excited. Hi Jenni

If you can't even eat a Ritz cracker, I would be very worried that

you are too tight!!!! When did you have your fill? I would not go

more than 4 weeks and if you still can not eat even a cracker, I

would suggest that you get an unfill. It is dangerous to be too

tight too long! Talk to Tracie Bartek about it, she may have some

suggestions too.

If she eats too fast she will "Yak" (as says..lol) If she eats after she has eaten enough...she will Yak!! This has helped her learn when to stop..when she is really hungry or not..and when is a good time to just drink some water. She is tight all day and usually won't eat until 8:30- 11:00pm ( she works 2nd shift ). I just wanted to share how difficult the fill process can be..I have lost 60 lbs with 4 small fills..1.8cc total. So each of

Brrr...I got a chill when I read 38 degrees! Hope it warms enough for a walk with the Lab:) My Yellow Lab used to keep me on a regular walking schedule. Now that she's not with us anymore, I'd really like to get another dog, however, we've become quite used to taking off for several days here and there without having to worry about making arrangements. Hi nne, Well it's 33 degrees today and I woke up to snow!! We ( me & Cayman-lab) are getting ready now to go check out the geese...watch them ice-skate on the bay lol.. When she goes to doggy heaven, she's only 6, we have talked about a second generation labra-doodle. No shedding, looks like a lab with wavy, silky curls! Very friendly & cute as a button! Who knows but we sure enjoy her! I also have 4 cats! The oldest, a black female, will be 19 in April! I don't think there will ever be a replacement for her, poor ol'gal! She is the Queen and all the other animals know it!

Snow? SNOW???? Is that the white stuff I hear about that falls from the sky? I wouldn't know since I live in Phoenix. Heh... Ahha...*Bi.at'.ch*...JUST KIDDING!!! I would love 70* right now!! I did go walk in the SNOW about 4" of that white stuff!! It's suppose to fall all day then turn to freezing rain tonight.Ugg! Guess the kids will be out of school and building snowmen again!! It is really beautiful on the branches blaa..blaa..blaa. I've seen enough already! Just waiting for SPRING!! We just bought a new boat and it is screaming for the bay...BUT there are to many ICE-BURGS..*#$@*..come on spring!

Hey Dana: I've seen the Labra-doodle's---very friendly, intelligent and no shedding! Our Stella (yellow Lab) shed constantly, and this was with weekly bathing and daily brushing. I have cats also (3) so I'm used to fur, vacuuming is a daily occurance in our home. I do have a question for you. When you go outside and lick a padlock, is it true that your tongue will stick to it? Does your nose run when it gets cold? Do you get frost on your upper lip when that happens? I haven't been able to find a shovel ANYWHERE in Phoenix. Do they sell them in your part of the world? Is that what you guys use to dig your cars out of various places such as driveways and ditches? I've seen photos of shovels but I just don't recall seeing one. Amazing, I know. What happens to your hair when you go outside while it is still wet? When you go outside, lick your lips, and then laugh, do your lips break?
