Guest guest
It is SOOOO Worth it! And its exactly what our tax dollars should be used for! -- Re: ( ) The luxury of an AS diagnosis... Hi Marie, I got someone someone over today from the Coordinated Intake , Developmental Services. She brought a lot of paperwork to fill out, and apply for services. According to her, we will get $$ for Special Services at home (up to $10,000)(to use for personal development of the child, for parental relief, for help with therapy exercises etc.), $$ for respite, a monthly check (up to $410.00 if your annual income is less then about $40,000) for Assitance for children with severe disabilities, a disability tax credit. It is a lot of paperwork, but I seems to be worth it. Veerle.Marie Downey <rmdowneyrogers> wrote: Wow I guess I have a lot to learn From my understanding here in my province of New Brunswick we have been told that children with ASD get better services in Alberta than in Ontario and in Alberta services last longer than in Ontario as well. That is why we ruled out moving to Ontario as our twin boys are already 11. We did consider Alberta though because services there we w ere told go to age 18 and here our boys are already without many services that would be helpful and our income is too low to pay for them plus the trained workers have to come from another province as ours doesn't have enough to go around either. Interesting information. Gives me more to ponder. Guest guest
Sounds wonderful Veerle, I hope and pray you are able to access some wonderful services for your 6 yr old son. From what I have heard the services in Ontario are very high quality, so take advantage of them. Yes the paperwork trail can seem rather overwhelming but you will probably find that a lot of it is duplicated from service to service, which should make it easier to fill out. Because my boys are older (age 11 and my dd is an adult now) getting services is much more difficult, and we have all we are going to ever receive in NB, unless the government changes its policies. Most of the time now the fight is to hold on to what we have and not lose it. My monthly cheque is slightly more for both my boys. I hope the respite system there is better as the respite system here is silly. We are supposed to receive 48hrs of respite monthly but they only pay us $100 for the 1st child and because I have twins the 2nd one is only worth $50. So I get $150 for 48 hrs which is a joke! No special needs worker is going to look after my ASD twins for 48hrs for only $150. The special needs workers here charge $10 per hr plus expenses per child and could charge me more than that as I have twins. At $10 per hr in order to have 48hrs of respite I need to pay out $480 plus expenses which was over 1/2 my hubbys income for 1 weekend alone. Trust me didn't happen ever. Guest guest
WOW Marie.. I am so sorry your services are so lacking I have an idea that I have posed here to my friends who are also not able to obtain adequate respite Contact your local high school staff. As about a suitable Student who is perhaps looking into getting some Experience with a special needs child ( or twins !) That you are looking for someone who might be interested in this field. The students in Ontario are required to do 40 hours volunteer time in order to obtain their diploma. Discussing your needs with the school councellor and others can be a win/ win situation. You will have to fill out a couple of sheets.. Really easy .. And this verifies the hours the student has done. You will get some respite.. And you are helping educate future teachers on the ways of the autism world! -- Re: ( ) The luxury of an AS diagnosis... Guest guest
Great idea thanks We did have an awesome gal who had just finished off her 4 yr teacher ed degree and was substitute teaching but she had experience and requested the full pay and she was worth it. She is now in the NWT under the Teacher Induction program teaching a combined Grade 4, 5, & 6 class with only 10 students. She was wonderful and our boys miss her a lot. I may look into that once school starts here, but I would definitely want someone reliable and willing to learn too. Our high school students are not required to do that unless they choose the coop program and then I think it has to be with a actual place of employment, but I can check it out. Guest guest
Remind them it looks GREAT on a resume !! Darn I was hoping that they were required to do the volunteer time like our kids are. My daughter and her boyfriend are going to the NWT!! Yellowknife ! They are doing a conference there with their teacher as representatives for native children in Ontario!!! My daughters bio father was full Mohawk. I want her to know both sides of the culture.. And some of the issues involved. I think she will do well and so will her boyfriend who is also part native. Its hard for the siblings of a special needs child to have their own goals . She is not diagnosed with any disability. -- Re: ( ) The luxury of an AS diagnosis... Guest guest
Hi Chris. It never ceases to amaze me how different things are from province to province, minimum wage, jobs, gas prices, housing, food, medical services, education, etc. etc. etc. The only consistency you can count on is the inconsistency of what is available and what is offered in each province you check out. I wonder when they instituted the volunteer high school program that you are referring too as it wasn't in existence when I graduated from Grade 13 in Ontario, but that was a long time ago. LOL We have a program similiar here with nurses but not high school students, where they are required to do some volunteer work each semester and we can get student nurses in our home. But the main goal of that is to educate them about autism. They work with us, so it is not respite. I think our health community is sadly lacking in instruction when it comes to dealing with special needs as well as our educational community, so it is very beneficial for them and at my household, with my experience trust me they learn plenty. I have native ancestry as well so I can definitely relate, although mine goes back further than your daughter's does. My great grandfather was full Cree from Northern Ontario but my father was the so called "black sheep" of the family so I know little about my background. Please tell you daughter to enjoy herself and learn lots.
