I’m in

County! Clifton is about 40 minutes away. My AS just

turned 17. He was only diagnosed last year so we’re very new at some of

this. So much if it makes so much sense and makes him easier to understand.

I asked this question 3 yrs ago :) Okay from my research the worst place to live is in the South. It was bad 3 yrs ago and worse still now! As many children aren't able to get their therapies any more--the Medicaid won't pay for it since it was switched over to another form of Medicaid. I would be FURIOUS! So glad we moved! Best places to live according to what I have learned are Wisconsin and North Carolina. But everywhere I looked in those states, cost of living was way out of reach for us. So I moved near one of those states (MN) and am happy as I get services for my daughter here that I didn't have before moving. Such as PCA services. A personal care assistant to help out, provide respite, etc. You can find out what states offer PCA services online--I just ran across that info recently. Do a search! Wisconsin has so many wonderful programs for autistic children. I wish we were there.

LOL But I guess the grass is always greener... What I did prior to moving is to see how far we would have to travel for services--O/T/specialists/etc. That factors into our cost of living--gas going back and forth. Where we live now we can get reimbursed for gas to appointments. We were reimbursed for one specialist visit--hotel, gas, and food--as it was 5 hrs away. You could also look at local support groups and see what support would be local to you in that city--or call and talk to someone in the group! I checked on to see if any groups were online as well. Some states have grants for special needs children. Grants for summer camp, grants for summer programs, grants for your special needs child to pursue their passion (dance, etc) which I didn't know about before! Even grants for respite!! One thing that was very important to me was to look

for children's activities in the area. Since dd does not have siblings at home, it was important that she got together with other children on a reg. basis. Can't guarantee that children will be at the park whenever we go! Before moving, there was never an opportunity for respite unless you cared for an elderly person and then there was a waiting list of 5 years!!! I searched for respite continually as I needed a break! I never did find anything for special needs children before we moved. You can call the Medicaid offices in different states and ask for info about what the state provides for special needs children. Some states you can look online and find the info.
