Hi Elaine,

Our Callum's being on Sugar Free Nystatin (100,000UI) oral suspension

(1ml 4 x per day) for the past 4 months.

He takes this via a dropper and is very good.

We've seen many rashes and pimples and hives on various parts of his

face, body and bottom, etc.

Also recently we've had lots of " behaviour " style symptoms / incidents

, such as: -

aggression - slapping, hiting out, etc;

mood swings - happy and content, crying and miserable :-(

sleep problems - took 4 hours to get him to sleep last night (1am!!)

appetite problems - eats well some days - hardly anything most of time

scratching his bottom all the time and sticking hands down pants :-(

Causing lots of problems with wife - saying she can't cope with him

anymore :-( arguments and everything - pretty low at the mo.

Maybe this is some form of yeast die-off, although via Dr Usman's

tests - Callum didn't show up much for yeast or parasites, etc.

Rather confused at the minute - any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Steve, Joanne, Callum & Ellie-Mae

Hi Steve,

We have now been on the full dose of Powder Nystatin for two weeks. (1 teaspoon split into four doses a day).

has had the odd day of being cranky and then some really good, happy days. However, we have had problems getting him to sleep and also seen quite a few of his very old stims return! I am not sure how long die off goes on for. I am looking at the behaviours in a positive way at the moment. At least something is happening. We saw Dr T at Frimley Green Childrens Hospital and he told us that the children who react are the children that needed to be treated.

I know that there is a lot of talk on other that question what the Nystatin is actially doing. I think it was debated on Sulfurstories. There are certainly a lot of people who have not tested positive for yeast - but have made huge improvements.

Hope things improve soon (for us all).

Jane

Hi Jane,

Thanks for the positive reply.

I feel that Callum does need the Nystatin (although Dr Usman

prescribed 500,000UI dose, but GP can only provide 100,000 dose on 1

month repeat prescription) :-(

Dr Usman staff are now able to send out the meds she prescribes - so I

may bite the bullet and buy direct from her - rather than use the

watered down version from the GP?

Callum also has some fantastic ABA sessions as well as not so good

ones, but this may also be down to MB-12 injections. In fact one of

ABA Therapist (who's been working with Callum for 2.5 years) said last

week after her session - it was the best session she'd every had with

him ;-) but he'd had an MB-12 injection the night before, but he's

been on these since March 2005.

Off to get some Melatonin - to help Callum sleep (or me ;-)

Cheers,

Steve, Joanne, Callum & Ellie-Mae

Hi Steve,

Hadn't seen you around for a while, now I know why:-(

Sorry you're having such a bad time, last post I heard from you was

really positive with Callum's speech starting to emerge. Sure the

nystatin has lots to do with it - from my camp, I've never seen my

normally really compliant happy little boy so different - it's like

having some horrible little drunk hanging around the place causing chaos

and driving me to drink - literally ;-)- so hopefully when we get this

stuff out of the way things will get back to normal - as Jane said - for

all of us!

Take care of yourselves,

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for the supportive email - cheers.

Yeah, pretty tough over here at the moment, Callum causing havoc, no

job for 4+ months :-( Jo at end of her tether and kids on school

holidays now...and we loose one of our long-term ABA Tutors this week :-((

Still we've got our health at least and I'll keep on battling ;-)

Hope things get better for us all soon.

Cheers,

Melatonin really helped Tom for a while - I think we used slow

release which still took a while to get him off to sleep but he did

at least stay asleep. The fast release made him fall asleep there

and then but then wake at 3am. There's nothing like sleep

deprivation to make you feel you're losing it. This is why it's used

as an instrument of torture! (Callum doesn't know that yet, you can

remind him when he's older) Do you know what particular test Dr

Usman did for yeast? Think I may try another for Tom - although as

I write he's lying on the sofa singing drunkenly " libben libben "

(sounds like German, perhaps that's where we're going wrong). Not

sure if yeast or just Tom!

Very best to you - it's a nightmare sometimes and would be easier if

you could see logical steps forward. It seems more often to be two

forward, one to the side, three back etc etc. Is your local

authority giving you any funded one to one during the school

holidays? Worth asking them even as respite care for him - so

important that you're fit enough to deal with the situation and keep

sense of humour which you sometimes can't be if you're all

knackered. (technical term).

One of Tom's latest hobbies was scatalogical art (discreet way of

putting it) - usually all over his slide and floor and

often " hidden " in hard to reach/clean places. This lasted six weeks

but seems (tempting fate here) to be passing now. When you explain

to friends how you spent your wedding anniversary with a glass of

champagne in one hand and a J cloth wiping poo off a child's slide

in the other they begin to get a tiny sense of what being a parent

of an ASD child can, on occasion, be like. Thank god they're cute!

best

Re:

Rash with Nystatin

Hi Elaine,

Just curious - what is scripting?

Ø

Using

speech but in a repetitive learnt way. Can be one phrase or a whole chunk

of speech, usually learnt from tele, book, video etc.

It’s normally used out of

context. It’s quite usual in

verbal asd kids – and I

Ø

laugh when I get annoyed –

as I never thought he’d talk – so any speech is a bonus. Plus it can be shaped and used in

teaching to become more usfeul and meaningful –

well imho it can!

Ah yes, thank you - we have a lot of this too, from both children. The learnt, somewhat stereotypical phrases.

DD are are almost 2 weeks on nystatin-just worked up to one full cap 2

days ago (rx calls for 4 caps per day!) and she has had a rash for a

week that keeps getting worse. It started on her cheeks and has spread

to her whole body, the worst is on her arms. Definitely looks like an

allergic reaction. I am worried about stopping nystatin as I have

heard that the yeast can become resistant. I will be calling my DAN!

today but would like any advise/input you all have.
